**If you already do SEO, you have most of what GEO job posts ask for.** Structured data, technical SEO, content and analytics carry over directly. Real posts from October 2026 expected three additions: understanding how LLMs retrieve and cite content, tracking a prompt set across engines, and reporting AI visibility metrics to leadership.

*Method: we compared the requirements in seven public GEO and AI search job posts, read in full on 31 October 2026 (CET), with standard SEO skills. Quotes are from those posts. It's a dated snapshot, not a survey. Advice marked "Our view" is opinion.*

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Most SEO skills transfer directly to GEO: research, technical audits, content and measurement.
> - The main gaps are prompt-based measurement, entity and source work, and explaining uncertainty.
> - A 90-day plan of learning, a small project and a write-up is enough to show the switch.
> - Describe the switch as an extension of your SEO work, with evidence, not a rebrand.

## Which SEO skills transfer directly?

Each of these skills appears in GEO posts almost word for word:

| SEO skill | How a GEO post phrased it |
|---|---|
| Structured data | "Experience with structured data, Schema.org, semantic HTML, crawlability, internal linking, and site architecture" ([B&H](https://www.mediabistro.com/jobs/3543141510-ai-seo-generative-engine-optimization-geo-specialist)) |
| Schema at scale | "Hands-on experience writing, testing, and auditing nested schema.org markup in JSON-LD" ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027)) |
| Technical SEO | "Working knowledge of structured data, schema markup, and technical on-page optimization" ([Hire AI Score](https://www.landearly.com/companies/hire-ai-score/jobs/geo-ai-visibility-specialist-a1d9ba7b)) |
| Keyword research | "Monitor keywords for position and volume, prompts and mentions" ([Manhattan Associates](https://manh.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/External/job/SEO---AI-Search-Manager_16978)) |
| Analytics | "Strong analytics skills in GA4 and Google Search Console" ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027)) |
| Stakeholder work | "Presenting and translating complex SEO/GEO strategies to senior stakeholders" ([Modus](https://www.mediabistro.com/jobs/3543202920-search-generative-engine-optimization-specialist-sgeo)) |

Manhattan Associates even folds prompts into the keyword task, so its post treats GEO as an extension of keyword work, not a replacement ([Manhattan Associates](https://manh.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/External/job/SEO---AI-Search-Manager_16978)).

## What gaps do the posts expect you to close?

**1. Knowing how AI engines find and use content.** Purple asks for "working knowledge of how AI engines find and use content: crawler access, rendering of JavaScript-heavy pages, retrieval, and the third-party sources LLMs cite" ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027)). B&H asks for an understanding of how "large language models, retrieval systems, AI search engines, and answer engines discover and synthesize web information" ([B&H](https://www.mediabistro.com/jobs/3543141510-ai-seo-generative-engine-optimization-geo-specialist)). Start with our guide to [how AI search engines build an answer](https://mentionx.ai/learn/fundamentals/ai-search-engines-build-answer-retrieval) and learn the AI crawlers by name.

**2. Measuring visibility inside answers.** Rank tracking doesn't cover this. Purple's KPIs are "mention share, citation share, share of voice, sentiment, and average position, by engine, topic, and competitor", and the role owns "the tracked prompt set" ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027)). Higglo wants "comfort working with citation-tracking or search-visibility tools" ([Higglo](https://www.landearly.com/companies/higglo-digital/jobs/geo-generative-engine-optimization-specialist-a8621c35)).

**3. Off-site authority as a citation lever.** In SEO, you build links. In GEO, you also work out which third-party pages AI engines cite. Purple's "Citation Gap Program" looks for sources that "cite competitors but not Purple" and then closes those gaps with PR and affiliate partners ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027)).

## What does a 90-day switch plan look like?

*Our view:* this plan targets the three gaps. Each step produces something you can show an employer. The timings are fictional.

| Weeks | Do | Evidence you'll have |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Read the crawler documentation for OpenAI ([OpenAI bots](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/bots)) and Google's AI features guidance ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). Audit one site's robots.txt for AI bots. | A one-page crawler access audit |
| 3–4 | Build a 30-prompt set for a brand you know, run it across at least three engines and record mentions and cited sources | A dated baseline |
| 5–8 | Make one change, such as answer-first rewrites or schema fixes, on pages tied to those prompts | A documented change log |
| 9–12 | Re-run the same prompts and compare citation and mention share | A before/after with honest caveats |
| Ongoing | Map which third-party sources the engines cite for your prompts | A citation gap list |

If your current employer lets you, run this on their site. It's the strongest evidence you can bring, and it may turn into an internal move. Our rewrite-and-measure project walks through weeks 5–12.

## How should you talk about the switch?

Present it as an extension of your SEO work, which is how employers frame it too. Manhattan Associates wants someone to "integrate traditional search optimization with LLM-driven search experiences" ([Manhattan Associates](https://manh.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/External/job/SEO---AI-Search-Manager_16978)). Modus describes "an SEO specialist at your core, evolving with the shift toward generative engine optimization" ([Modus](https://www.mediabistro.com/jobs/3543202920-search-generative-engine-optimization-specialist-sgeo)).

*Our view:* in interviews, lead with one SEO win and then your AI visibility baseline. Be honest about variance. AI answers change from run to run, and an interviewer who knows the field will respect you for saying so. Our [interview guide](https://mentionx.ai/learn/careers/geo-interview-questions-strong-answers) has sample answers.

## How do you update your CV and title?

Add the vocabulary the posts use: "GEO", "AEO", "AI search", "AI visibility", "citation share" and "prompt set". Recruiters search for these terms. Keep "SEO" in your title, since every post we read still wanted it. For specific wording, see [GEO resume and LinkedIn](https://mentionx.ai/learn/careers/write-geo-resume-linkedin-profile).

## Which employers suit someone switching from SEO?

The posts point to two routes. Agencies take on several clients and value testing. Higglo's post asks for "comfort with experimentation — designing tests, reading results, and iterating quickly" and lists "prior experience working within an agency or consultancy managing multiple client engagements" as a nice-to-have ([Higglo](https://www.landearly.com/companies/higglo-digital/jobs/geo-generative-engine-optimization-specialist-a8621c35)). In-house roles go deeper on one site. B&H says "experience with large-scale ecommerce websites is strongly preferred" ([B&H](https://www.mediabistro.com/jobs/3543141510-ai-seo-generative-engine-optimization-geo-specialist)), and Purple's role owns product feeds and Merchant Center work for AI shopping ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027)).

*Our view:* if your SEO background is ecommerce, apply in-house, where your catalogue and feed experience counts straight away. If it's mixed, an agency gives you more prompt sets and more case studies in less time.

## What does the switch not require?

None of the seven posts asked for a certificate, a machine learning degree or coding beyond technical SEO. Purple and B&H mention APIs, dashboards or data analysis as preferred or useful, not required ([Purple](https://www.tealhq.com/job/sr-manager-ai-search-visibility-aeo-seo_7ea1af2ce70e065e112ad89d354ed40a6b027); [B&H](https://www.mediabistro.com/jobs/3543141510-ai-seo-generative-engine-optimization-geo-specialist)). *Our view:* time spent on a measured project beats time spent on a course.

## Is the switch a risk?

Job titles in this field are still settling, and seven posts don't measure demand. *Our view:* the risk is low, because the SEO skills you keep stay valuable either way. Adding AI visibility work widens the set of roles you can apply for rather than narrowing it.

## From MentionX data: what you'll be measuring

**Method.** Read-only aggregate queries over MentionX scans from 22 August to 29 October 2026 (UTC): 2,217 engine runs (2,154 completed) across 18 anonymised projects and six engines.

GEO work is measured differently from rankings. In the MentionX sample, engines mention brands at very different rates:

| Engine | Brand mentioned | Answers with no citations |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gemini | 47.3% | 50.7% |
| OpenAI | 42.9% | 30.2% |
| Perplexity | 31.5% | 4.1% |
| AI Mode | 31.3% | 12.6% |
| Copilot | 26.0% | 47.0% |
| DeepSeek | 24.0% | 99.0% |

And prompt intent matters even more:

| Intent | Brand mentioned | Share of voice |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Brand-specific | 100% | 64.3 |
| Comparison | 91.9% | 44.6 |
| Recommendation | 29.2% | 26.8 |
| Best-of | 26.6% | 22.7 |
| Problem | 5.7% | 7.7 |

*Our view:* being able to read and explain tables like these is a core part of the job you're switching into. Practise on a small prompt set before your first interview.

**Limits.** A convenience sample of mostly B2B software projects, run through engine APIs, which can behave differently from the consumer apps. Perplexity, Copilot and DeepSeek figures come from a single day (26 October 2026), so treat them as a snapshot, not a trend.

## Worked example: Ledgerline's SEO specialist moves into GEO

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable tool. Figures are illustrative.*

Ledgerline's SEO specialist wants to move into its new GEO role. Over 90 days she builds a prompt set of 40 buyer questions, runs it monthly across three engines and records mentions and citations in a spreadsheet.

She picks one fix to test: adding a clear comparison table to an under-cited guide. She writes up the method, the result and what she'd do next, including where the data was too noisy to conclude anything. That write-up becomes the centrepiece of her internal application. Every detail here is fictional.

> **Pro move:** Bring a one-page write-up of a real test to interviews. It shows method and honesty better than any certificate.

## What does a GEO role look like day to day?

Expect a mix of prompt tracking, content briefs, technical checks, source and review work, and reporting. Many roles also involve teaching colleagues what AI search changes. *Our view:* communication matters more than in many SEO roles, because the metrics are newer and less familiar to leadership.

## How do you build evidence without a GEO job?

Run a small project on your own site, a friend's business or a public topic. Track a prompt set, make one change and report what happened. Publish the write-up if you can. A small, honest project beats a long list of tools.

## Which learning resources are worth your time?

Start with official documentation from search engines and AI providers, then read case studies with clear methods. Be wary of courses that promise guaranteed results. Learn basic spreadsheet analysis and how to explain sampling and variance.

## How do you handle salary and title questions?

Titles vary widely, from GEO specialist to AI search lead to SEO manager with a broader remit. Compare responsibilities rather than titles. Ask what the role will be measured on in its first year.

## What if your employer has no GEO role?

Propose a small pilot inside your current role: a prompt set, a monthly report and one test per quarter. That builds experience and may create the role. Keep it modest so it doesn't crowd out your core SEO work.

## How do you keep your SEO skills sharp?

Don't drop them. Crawling, indexing, structured data and content quality still underpin GEO. Employers value people who can do both.

## What do hiring managers look for in a switcher?

Evidence that you understand how AI answers are formed, can measure them sensibly and can explain results to non-specialists. They also want reassurance that your SEO fundamentals are solid. *Our view:* a switcher with strong SEO and one good GEO project is often more attractive than a newcomer with only GEO theory.

## How do you network into the field?

Share your project write-up where practitioners gather, comment thoughtfully on others' work and ask specific questions. Offer to help with small tests. Relationships built on useful contributions tend to lead to referrals.

## What should your first 90 days in a GEO role cover?

Learn the business and its buyers, set up or audit the prompt set, fix any crawler access problems and agree on a reporting format. Pick one or two tests for the first quarter. Avoid promising quick wins.

## How do you avoid burnout from constant change?

Set a regular time each week to review changes from engines and official sources, and ignore the rest. Not every announcement needs action. Focus on what affects your buyers and your prompt set.

## How do you explain GEO results honestly?

Say what changed, how confident you are and what else might explain it. Hiring managers and leaders trust people who separate evidence from hope, especially in a field where answers vary from run to run.

## Common questions

**Do I need to learn to code?** No, but basic spreadsheets and comfort reading HTML help. Some scripting is a bonus.

**Is a GEO certificate necessary?** No. A real project and a clear write-up usually count for more.

**Will GEO replace SEO jobs?** Many teams are adding GEO to SEO roles rather than replacing them. Expect the two to overlap.

**How long does the switch take?** A focused 90 days can give you enough evidence to apply, though learning continues after that.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can an SEO become a GEO specialist?

Yes. Every GEO post we read in October 2026 asked for SEO experience first; the additions were LLM retrieval knowledge, prompt tracking and AI visibility reporting.

### What's the biggest gap for SEOs moving to GEO?

Measuring visibility inside AI answers. Posts asked for KPIs such as citation share and share of voice by engine, which rank tracking doesn't cover.

### Do I need a GEO certificate to switch?

None of the posts we read required one. They asked for experience and measured results.
