**A prompt that works tells ChatGPT four things: what you want, the context it can't know, what the output should look like and how you'll judge it.** Frameworks such as role-task-format are memory aids for those four parts. The real gains come from pasting your own material, asking ChatGPT to question you first, and iterating in the same chat.

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Use four parts: goal, context, output, checks. Everything else is optional.
> - Paste real material (briefs, reviews, data). It beats any clever wording.
> - On bigger jobs, ask ChatGPT to ask you questions before it writes.
> - Give feedback that names the problem. "Too long" is weaker than "cut the second section; our buyers already know the problem."
> - Save prompts that work in a project or skill (lessons 3 and 4) so you stop retyping them.

## Which four parts does every good prompt have?

| Part | What to include | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | The decision or deliverable, and who it's for | "A landing page hero for finance managers evaluating AP software" |
| Context | Facts ChatGPT can't know | Product facts, proof points, audience pains, competitor claims |
| Output | Format, length, structure, tone | "Three options, each a headline under 10 words and one subhead" |
| Checks | How you'll judge it and what to avoid | "No claims we can't prove; flag anything that needs a source" |

The goal stops generic answers. The context is where most prompts fail: ChatGPT will fill gaps with average marketing copy. The checks turn ChatGPT into a first reviewer of its own work.

```
GOAL: [deliverable] for [audience] so that [decision/action].
CONTEXT:
- Product: [what it does, for whom, price point if relevant]
- Proof we can use: [numbers, customers, quotes we're allowed to cite]
- Audience pains in their words: [paste quotes]
- What competitors already say: [paste]
OUTPUT: [format, length, number of options, tone].
CHECKS: Use only the facts above. Mark any claim that needs
a source with [CHECK]. Avoid: [banned words or claims].
```

## When should ChatGPT ask you questions first?

For anything bigger than a single asset, add one line: "Before you start, ask me up to five questions about anything you'd need to do this well." ChatGPT will often ask about audience, offer or constraints you forgot to state. Answer them in one reply, then let it write.

*Our view:* this single line improves more first drafts than any framework acronym.

## How do you fix a weak answer?

Stay in the same chat and name what's wrong. A few patterns cover most fixes.

| Problem | Say this |
|---|---|
| Generic copy | "This could describe any AP tool. Rewrite using only the proof points I gave, and name the specific workflow." |
| Too long | "Cut to 120 words. Keep the second and fourth points." |
| Wrong tone | "Here's a paragraph we published that sounds right: [paste]. Match its sentence length and directness." |
| Invented facts | "List every factual claim in your draft and say which line of my context supports it." |
| Too safe | "Give me two bolder options that a competitor wouldn't dare run, and say what risk each takes." |

## Should you use reasoning or let ChatGPT search?

ChatGPT can choose how much to think and whether to search. For strategy, positioning and analysis, a reasoning model or a higher thinking setting usually gives more careful answers; the plan page lists which models your plan includes. For anything that depends on current facts (prices, competitors, news), make sure search is on and ask for citations. For pure rewriting of your own text, search adds nothing.

> **Pro move:** end important prompts with "Then critique your answer as a sceptical [CFO/head of sales/customer] would, and give me a revised version." You get the draft and a first review in one turn.

## Prompts to copy

```
CLARIFY FIRST
I need [deliverable] for [audience]. Before writing anything,
ask me up to five questions that would most change the result.
Wait for my answers.
```

```
OPTIONS, NOT ONE ANSWER
Give me five distinct angles for [campaign/asset]. For each:
the angle in one line, who it would resonate with, and the
main risk. Don't write copy yet.
```

```
SELF-CHECK
Review the draft above against this brief: [paste]. List
where it misses the brief, any claim not supported by the
context I gave, and any sentence a buyer would skip.
Then rewrite.
```

```
MATCH OUR VOICE
Here are three pieces we published that sound like us:
[paste]. Describe our voice in five rules. Then rewrite
[draft] following those rules.
```

## Worked example: Ledgerline's landing page hero

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable tool. Details are illustrative.*

The first prompt was "Write a hero section for our AP automation landing page." ChatGPT returned "Streamline your accounts payable with AI-powered automation", which could belong to any vendor.

The second attempt used the four-part template. It pasted three customer quotes about chasing invoice approvals by email, two allowed proof points, and Competitor A's and Competitor B's current headlines. It asked for three options under 10 words and a [CHECK] flag on unsupported claims. One option, "Approvals that don't live in your inbox", went to a test. ChatGPT flagged one proof point as needing a source, which saved an awkward legal review.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Rewrite one prompt you use often into the four-part template.
- Try the clarify-first line on your next brief.
- Keep one good output next to each prompt you save.

## Common questions

**What is the best prompt framework for ChatGPT?** Any framework that makes you state the goal, the context ChatGPT cannot know, the output you want and how you will check it. Acronyms help you remember, but the missing context is what usually weakens answers.

**Should I ask ChatGPT to act as an expert?** A role line can set tone and vocabulary, but it does not add knowledge. Specific context such as your audience, offer and evidence improves answers far more than "act as a senior marketer".

**How long should a ChatGPT prompt be?** As long as the task needs. A subject line test needs two lines; a campaign brief may need a page of pasted context. Cut anything ChatGPT would do anyway.
