**Use ChatGPT for the thinking-heavy parts of SEO, such as clustering keywords, writing briefs, structuring pages and refreshing old content, and use real search data for volumes, rankings and traffic.** It's quick at turning an export into a plan, but it doesn't know search volumes and shouldn't guess them.

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Bring exports from Search Console and your SEO tool; never accept invented volumes.
> - Cluster by intent first, then map clusters to pages.
> - Write briefs that name the question, the angle and the evidence only you have.
> - Use search to look at what currently ranks, then check the SERP yourself.
> - Refresh old posts using Search Console queries the page already gets.

## What does the workflow look like?

| Step | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Cluster | Keyword export with volumes | Intent clusters, one target page each |
| Map | Clusters + your sitemap | New pages vs pages to update |
| Brief | Cluster, SERP notes, your expertise | Content brief |
| Draft and edit | Brief, notes | Draft (lesson 7) |
| Internal links | Sitemap list | Suggested links with anchor text |
| Refresh | Search Console queries for a URL | Gaps to cover, sections to update |

## Which prompts should you copy?

```
CLUSTER
Attached: keyword export (keyword, volume, difficulty).
Group keywords by search intent, not just shared words. For
each cluster: a name, the primary keyword (highest volume),
the intent (learn / compare / buy / do), and whether one page
can serve it. Use only the volumes in the file.
```

```
MAP TO SITE
Here's our sitemap URL list: [paste]. For each cluster,
say whether an existing URL should target it (and which), or
a new page is needed. Flag clusters where two of our pages
compete.
```

```
SEO BRIEF
Write a brief for the cluster [name]. Include: the question
the page must answer in the first paragraph, sub-questions as
H2s, what we can add that ranking pages lack (from my notes:
[paste]), internal links to include from this list: [paste],
and a meta description under 155 characters.
```

```
REFRESH
Attached: Search Console queries for [URL] (query, clicks,
impressions, position). Which queries does the page rank for
but not answer well? Suggest sections to add or update, and
title tag options that match the top queries.
```

## Where does ChatGPT search fit?

Use search to see what ranks and what competitors say, then open the pages yourself. OpenAI says search may rewrite your query and uses approximate location, so results can differ from Google and from colleague to colleague. Treat it as research, not as a rank check.

For ChatGPT's own answers and citations, see lesson 19 and [how to rank in ChatGPT](https://mentionx.ai/learn/engines/chatgpt/how-to-rank).

*Our view:* the brief is where AI-assisted SEO wins or loses. A brief that names your unique evidence produces a page worth ranking; a brief that lists keywords produces another average page.

> **Pro move:** ask ChatGPT to turn each H2 in your brief into the exact question a buyer would type. Pages structured as clear answers tend to serve both search results and AI answers.

## Worked example: Ledgerline's cluster map

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable tool. Details are illustrative.*

Ledgerline exported 600 keywords from its SEO tool. ChatGPT produced 31 intent clusters; the map step showed two existing posts competing for "invoice approval workflow". The team merged them and redirected one. The refresh prompt on the merged page found impressions for "approval matrix template" with no section answering it; adding a template section was the first change.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Cluster one keyword export with real volumes.
- Run the refresh prompt on your highest-impression page.
