**n8n's Google Gemini node connects Gemini models to everything else in your marketing stack: Sheets, Slack, HubSpot, RSS feeds and webhooks. The node handles text, documents, images, video, audio and File Search stores. For anything it doesn't expose, such as Google Search grounding settings, the HTTP Request node can call the Gemini API with the same credential. This lesson shows the setup, three workflows marketers actually use, and the guardrails that keep them cheap and safe. Every external-facing output ends as a draft that a person approves.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Credential: **Google Gemini(PaLM)**, using an API key from Google AI Studio in a company-owned, billed project.
> - The node covers Audio, Document, File Search, Image, Media File, Text and Video operations.
> - Use the HTTP Request node with the predefined credential for grounding or newer API options.
> - Ask for JSON output so the next node can parse results reliably.
> - Drafts only: write to a sheet or an internal channel, and have a person approve anything public.

*Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Gemini Apps Help, the Gemini release notes, Google Workspace Help, Google Search Central, Search Console Help, the Gemini API docs and the Google blog posts cited in Sources. Google renames and moves Gemini features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.*

## What can the Google Gemini node do?

From the n8n node documentation (checked November 2026):

| Resource | Operations | Marketing use |
|---|---|---|
| Text | Message a Model | Summaries, tagging, drafts, classification |
| Document | Analyze Document | Pull key points from PDFs, such as analyst reports and RFPs |
| Image | Analyze Image, Generate an Image, Edit Image | Check ad creative, produce variants |
| Video | Analyze Video, Generate a Video, Download Video | Summarise webinars, generate short clips |
| Audio | Analyze Audio, Transcribe a Recording | Transcribe podcasts and sales calls |
| Media File | Upload Media File | Upload large files for later calls |
| File Search | Create, list, delete and upload to File Search stores | Searchable knowledge from your docs (RAG) |

n8n also has Gemini chat model sub-nodes for its AI Agent node. See [n8n AI nodes and models](https://mentionx.ai/learn/n8n/n8n-ai-nodes-models) for when to use an agent and when to use a single model call.

## How do you set it up?

1. **Get an API key** in Google AI Studio inside a company-owned Google Cloud project with billing on ([lesson 10](https://mentionx.ai/learn/gemini/gemini-api-ai-studio-agent-platform)). Paid-tier data isn't used to improve Google products.
2. **Add the credential** in n8n: Credentials > New > **Google Gemini(PaLM) API**. Paste the key; the host is usually the default generativelanguage.googleapis.com.
3. **Add a Google Gemini node**, choose Text > Message a Model, and pick a model such as gemini-3.8-flash.
4. **Test** with one item before you connect a schedule.
5. **Set a budget alert** in Google Cloud billing.

> **Pro move:** keep one "model config" Set node at the start of every workflow, holding the model ID, temperature and prompt version. When Google changes prices, as Argon does on 1 December 2026, or ships a new model, you change one field instead of hunting through every node. Log the prompt version with each result so you can explain changes in your data later.

## Workflow 1: Weekly Gemini visibility check

```text
Schedule Trigger (Mon 06:00 CET)
  -> Google Sheets: read "prompts" tab (prompt, cluster, priority)
  -> Loop Over Items (batch of 5)
     -> HTTP Request: POST /v1beta/interactions, model gemini-3.8-flash,
        tools: [{ "type": "google_search" }]
     -> Code: pull answer text, search queries and url_citation URLs
     -> Google Gemini node (Message a Model, Flash-Lite): parse the answer
        into JSON matching the schema below
     -> Google Sheets: append to "results" tab with date and prompt version
     -> Wait (2s)
  -> Code: compare with last week
  -> Slack: post summary to #ai-visibility (internal channel)
```

Use HTTP Request here so you control the grounding tool and can read the google_search_call queries and url_citation annotations, which show the searches run and the sources cited. In HTTP Request, choose Authentication > Predefined Credential Type and select your Gemini credential.

A response schema for the parsing step:

```json
{
  "type": "object",
  "properties": {
    "brands_mentioned": { "type": "array", "items": { "type": "string" } },
    "recommended_first": { "type": "string" },
    "our_brand_described_as": { "type": "string" }
  },
  "required": ["brands_mentioned"]
}
```

Combine the parsed JSON with the cited domains from the url_citation annotations in a Code node. Remember that API answers aren't identical to the Gemini app or AI Mode. Treat them as a consistent trend signal, and sample the real surfaces manually each month ([lesson 20](https://mentionx.ai/learn/gemini/gemini-visibility-tracking-monthly-routine)).

## Workflow 2: Review and feedback tagging

```text
Schedule Trigger (daily)
  -> HTTP Request or app node: fetch new reviews / NPS comments
  -> Google Gemini (Text, gemini-3.5-flash-lite): tag theme, sentiment, competitor named, quote
  -> Google Sheets: append tagged rows
  -> IF negative AND mentions "cancel": Slack DM to the CS lead (internal)
```

Flash-Lite is cheap enough for high-volume tagging. For a big backlog, use the Gemini Batch API, which Google prices at a 50% reduction.

## Workflow 3: Content brief drafts from new competitor pages

```text
RSS Feed Trigger: Competitor A-D blogs
  -> HTTP Request: fetch page
  -> Google Gemini (Text): summarise angle, target query, gaps vs our page
  -> Google Docs: create draft brief in "Briefs - review" folder
  -> Slack: notify #content (internal) with link
```

The workflow only drafts. A strategist decides whether a brief goes ahead.

## How do you keep it cheap and reliable?

| Risk | Fix |
|---|---|
| Rate limits (429) | Retry on Fail with backoff; Wait nodes between batches |
| Cost creep | Flash-Lite for tagging; batch for backfills; budget alerts; cap the prompt set |
| Grounding overages | 5,000 free queries a month across Gemini 3+ models, then $14 per 1,000. Log the queries each run uses |
| Parsing failures | JSON response schema; Code node validation; error branch to a sheet |
| Silent failures | Error Workflow that alerts an internal channel |
| Key leaks | Credentials only; never put keys in Set nodes or sheets |

See [n8n error handling and retries](https://mentionx.ai/learn/n8n/n8n-error-handling-retries) and [n8n costs and executions](https://mentionx.ai/learn/n8n/n8n-costs-executions).

## What should never be automated?

- Publishing to social, your website or ad accounts without review.
- Sending email to customers or prospects.
- Replying to reviews in your brand's name.
- Changing bids or budgets.

*Our view:* the best marketing automations do the reading and the first draft. People do the judging and the sending. That split saves most of the time and avoids most of the risk.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.*

Ledgerline ran Workflow 1 with 30 prompts and Workflow 2 on G2 and Capterra reviews.

| Workflow | Volume (illustrative) | Model | Monthly cost (illustrative) | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Visibility check | 30 prompts weekly, ~360 grounded queries a month | gemini-3.8-flash | Under $2; grounding within the free 5,000 | Sheet + internal Slack summary |
| Review tagging | ~400 reviews a month | gemini-3.5-flash-lite | Under $1 | Tagged sheet |
| Competitor briefs | ~20 new posts a month | gemini-3.8-flash | Under $1 | Draft Docs |

### Walkthrough

1. Marketing ops created the credential from the company Cloud project and set a budget alert.
2. She built Workflow 1 with HTTP Request plus grounding, and tested it on 3 prompts.
3. She added the JSON schema and a Code node that rejected malformed rows to an "errors" tab.
4. In week 3 the summary showed Competitor B appearing in 12 of 30 answers, up from 7. The content lead read the cited pages and assigned a comparison page update.
5. All outputs stayed internal. Nothing was posted automatically.

## Common mistakes

- **Personal API keys** in production workflows.
- **No prompt version logging.** You can't explain week-on-week changes.
- **Auto-posting AI drafts.**
- **Using Argon for bulk tagging.** It's slow and expensive.
- **Treating API results as the Gemini app.**

## Try it yourself

Build Workflow 2 on 20 of your reviews. Use Text > Message a Model with a prompt that returns theme, sentiment and a quote as JSON, and write the results to a sheet. Check 10 rows by hand. If more than two are wrong, tighten the prompt before you schedule it.

## Quick quiz

**1. What's the n8n credential name for Gemini?**

*Answer:* Google Gemini(PaLM).

**2. How do you use options the node doesn't expose, like grounding?**

*Answer:* The HTTP Request node with the predefined Gemini credential.

**3. Which model fits high-volume tagging?**

*Answer:* A Flash-Lite model, or the Batch API for backlogs.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Your credential uses a company-owned, billed project.
- Each workflow logs model, prompt version and date.
- No workflow publishes or sends externally without approval.
