**Google's AI features don't need special markup. Google says plainly that there's no special schema.org markup you need to add, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt and similar AI files. What does help is entity clarity: Google, and so Gemini, AI Mode and AI Overviews, should be in no doubt about who your company is, what you sell, which category you're in and which profiles are yours. Structured data is one of the clearest ways to say that, as long as it matches what the page visibly says. This lesson covers the markup worth having, the entity signals around it, and how to check what Google and Gemini believe about you.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Structured data isn't required for AI features, but it still supports rich results and makes facts about your brand unambiguous.
> - Must-haves for most brands: **Organization** (logo, url, sameAs, contact) on the homepage, **Product** or **SoftwareApplication** on product pages, and **Article** with author on content.
> - Google says structured data must **match the visible text** on the page.
> - Keep Merchant Center and Google Business Profile up to date. Google lists them in its AI features guidance.
> - Ask Gemini and AI Mode what they think your company is, and fix the sources behind any errors.

Google renames and moves Gemini features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.*

## What does Google actually say?

| Statement (Search Central, 2026) | Practical meaning |
|---|---|
| "Structured data isn't required for generative AI search, and there's no special schema.org markup you need to add." | Don't buy "AI schema" products |
| "However, it's a good idea to continue using it" as part of your overall SEO | Keep using it for rich results and clarity |
| "Making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page" is listed as an SEO best practice for AI features | Markup that contradicts the page is a risk |
| No need for new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, "as Google Search itself doesn't use them" | llms.txt is fine for other services, neutral for Google |
| "Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" | Your product and location data feeds AI answers |

## Which markup is worth having?

| Page | Type | Key properties | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homepage or About | Organization | name, url, logo, sameAs, description, contactPoint, foundingDate | Identifies the entity and links official profiles |
| Product page (SaaS) | SoftwareApplication | name, applicationCategory, operatingSystem, offers, aggregateRating (only if real and on-page) | States category and pricing clearly |
| Product page (physical) | Product with Offer | name, image, brand, sku or gtin, offers (price, availability), shipping and returns | Merchant listings and shopping |
| Blog and guides | Article | headline, author (Person with url), datePublished, dateModified | Authorship and freshness |
| Breadcrumbs | BreadcrumbList | itemListElement | Site structure |
| Author pages | ProfilePage, Person | name, sameAs, jobTitle | Expertise signals |

An Organization example:

```json
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Organization",
  "name": "Ledgerline",
  "url": "https://www.ledgerline.example",
  "logo": "https://www.ledgerline.example/logo.png",
  "description": "Accounts payable automation software for mid-sized finance teams.",
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/ledgerline-example",
    "https://www.g2.com/products/ledgerline-example",
    "https://github.com/ledgerline-example"
  ],
  "contactPoint": {
    "@type": "ContactPoint",
    "contactType": "sales",
    "email": "sales@ledgerline.example"
  }
}
```

## What else makes your entity clear?

Markup is only one signal. Google's systems also read what the web says about you.

| Signal | Action |
|---|---|
| Consistent name and description | Use the same one-line description on your site, LinkedIn, G2, Crunchbase and app marketplaces |
| An About page that states facts | Founded, headquarters, category, customers, leadership, in text |
| Category language | Say the category plainly ("accounts payable automation software"), not just a slogan |
| Third-party coverage | Real reviews, analyst mentions and integration-partner listings |
| Knowledge panel | If you have one, claim it and suggest corrections through Google's process |
| Business Profile | Accurate name, category, hours and website for each location |
| Merchant Center | Clean feed with brand, GTIN and accurate prices ([lesson 17](https://mentionx.ai/learn/gemini/gemini-merchant-center-shopping-visibility)) |

> **Pro move:** write a 40-word "entity statement" (who you are, category, who you serve, one proof point) and use it word for word in your Organization description, About page opening, LinkedIn about section and review-site profiles. When Gemini or AI Mode describes you, compare its wording to the statement. When the sources agree, AI descriptions tend to converge on your wording. Where they don't, the sources behind the answer usually show you which profile is out of date.

## How do you check what Gemini believes about you?

Run these prompts in the Gemini app (logged out of connected apps, or in a clean account) and in AI Mode:

```text
What is [Brand]? What category is it in, who is it for, and what does it cost?
Who are [Brand]'s main competitors?
Is [Brand] a good fit for [segment]? What are its limitations?
```

Log three things: wrong facts, missing facts, and the sources cited. Then:

1. Fix your own pages first (About, pricing, product).
2. Update third-party profiles that are cited with old information.
3. Check that the structured data matches the corrected text.
4. Re-run monthly ([lesson 20](https://mentionx.ai/learn/gemini/gemini-visibility-tracking-monthly-routine)).

## How do you test markup?

- **Rich Results Test** for each template (homepage, product, article).
- **Schema Markup Validator** for general schema.org validity.
- **Search Console enhancements reports** for errors at scale.
- **URL Inspection**: check that the rendered HTML includes the JSON-LD if it's injected with JavaScript.

*Our view:* the most common problem we see isn't missing markup. It's contradictory markup, such as an old price in an Offer, an aggregateRating with no visible reviews, or three different company descriptions across templates. Fix contradictions before you add anything new.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.*

Gemini described Ledgerline as "an expense management tool", which is the wrong category.

| Source checked | Finding (illustrative) | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Homepage Organization description | "Spend smarter with Ledgerline" (slogan, no category) | Replaced with the entity statement |
| Old Crunchbase profile | Listed as "expense management" from 2021 | Updated |
| G2 category | Correct (AP automation) | None |
| SoftwareApplication on product page | applicationCategory missing; Offer price outdated | Added "FinanceApplication", corrected price to match the page |
| About page | No category sentence | Added the 40-word entity statement |

### Walkthrough

1. The SEO lead ran the three entity prompts in Gemini and AI Mode and logged the cited sources.
2. Crunchbase and the homepage slogan were the likely causes of the wrong category.
3. She wrote the entity statement and applied it across the site, Crunchbase, LinkedIn and G2.
4. The developer fixed the SoftwareApplication markup and validated it in the Rich Results Test.
5. Two months later both surfaces called Ledgerline "accounts payable automation software". The team noted the timing, without claiming the markup alone caused it.

## Common mistakes

- **Buying "AI schema"** that Google says it doesn't need.
- **Markup that doesn't match the page.**
- **Fake or unsupported aggregateRating.**
- **Slogans instead of a category** in descriptions.
- **Ignoring third-party profiles** that AI cites.

## Try it yourself

Ask Gemini and AI Mode "What is [your brand]?" Note the category and the sources. Then check your homepage Organization markup and About page. Do they state the same category in plain words? Write your 40-word entity statement and list every profile where it should appear.

## Quick quiz

**1. Is special schema needed for AI Overviews?**

*Answer:* No. Google says no special schema.org markup is needed.

**2. What must structured data match?**

*Answer:* The visible text on the page.

**3. Which property links your official profiles?**

*Answer:* sameAs in Organization markup.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Organization, product and Article markup validates and matches the pages.
- Your entity statement is consistent across your site and profiles.
- You've logged what Gemini and AI Mode say about you.
