**Audiences in Google Ads are now mostly signals for Smart Bidding and Performance Max, not hard targeting, so the job is to give Google good first-party lists and keep them fresh.** Customer Match and GA4 audiences are the two that matter most.

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Customer Match memberships expire after 540 days; keep lists refreshed with at least 100 adds or updates in that window.
> - On Search, add audiences as "Observation" to learn without limiting reach.
> - GA4 audiences are available in Google Ads once the products are linked.
> - In Performance Max, audiences are audience signals: hints, not limits.
> - Use customer lists as exclusions too: no point paying for clicks from current customers on acquisition campaigns.

## Which audiences should you build first?

| Audience | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Current customers | Customer Match (CRM) | Exclude from acquisition; upsell campaigns |
| Open opportunities | Customer Match | Observation; bid up |
| High-intent visitors (pricing, demo page) | GA4 audience | Observation; remarketing |
| Recent converters | Google Ads or GA4 data | Exclusion or signal |
| Lookalikes of customers | Demand Gen lookalike segments | Prospecting |

## How do you keep Customer Match working?

- Upload hashed emails, phones or addresses through Data Manager or a CRM connection, and accept the Customer Match policy.
- Refresh regularly; Google says memberships expire after 540 days.
- Keep lists separated by stage so you can bid or exclude by stage.

## Observation or targeting?

**Targeting** limits who can see the ad. **Observation** shows ads to everyone and reports how each audience performs. On Search use Observation unless you are running a dedicated remarketing campaign. Smart Bidding already uses audience membership as a signal, so Observation mainly gives you reporting.

## How do audiences work in Performance Max and Demand Gen?

In Performance Max, an audience signal tells Google where to start; it can still show ads to others. In Demand Gen, audiences target, and lookalike segments let you reach people similar to a seed list.

> **Pro move:** build a GA4 audience of people who viewed the pricing page twice in 30 days but didn't request a demo. Add it to Search as Observation and compare its conversion rate. It tells you whether a remarketing message is worth the work.

*Our view:* first-party lists are the most useful signal you can give Google in 2026. Put a CRM sync in place before spending time on Google's own audience segments.

## Targeting or observation?

| Setting | What it does | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| Observation | Reports on the audience without restricting reach | Search campaigns, to see how audiences perform |
| Targeting | Shows ads only to the audience | Remarketing or Customer Match campaigns |
| Exclusion | Stops ads showing to the audience | Existing customers in acquisition campaigns |

## How do you set up Customer Match, step by step?

1. Check eligibility and policy requirements in Google's Customer Match help.
2. Export a list from your CRM with consented contacts only.
3. Format emails and phone numbers as Google requires; Google hashes data on upload in the interface.
4. Upload in **Tools → Shared library → Audience manager**, or through Data Manager.
5. Set membership duration (up to 540 days).
6. Wait for the match rate, then apply the list as observation, targeting or exclusion.
7. Refresh the list regularly; Google needs at least 100 additions for some list operations.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Low match rate | Business emails, poor formatting | Add phone numbers; clean the data |
| List too small to serve | Not enough matched users | Combine lists or use observation |
| Ads shown to customers | No exclusion | Exclude the customer list |
| GA4 audience missing in Ads | Link or sharing settings | Check the GA4-Ads link (lesson 6) |

## Practitioner hacks for audiences

- **Start with observation on Search.** It shows which audiences convert without cutting reach.
- **Segment your customer data by value.** A list of high-value customers is a better seed than all customers.
- **Refresh lists on a schedule**, for example monthly, so they stay current.
- **Exclude recent converters** from acquisition campaigns.
- **Name lists with source and date** so you know what each contains.

## Questions to ask about audiences

1. Which lists exist, and when were they last refreshed?
2. Which are targeting, observation or exclusion?
3. What's the match rate for each Customer Match list?
4. Is consent recorded for every contact uploaded?

## What edge cases come up?

- **Business email addresses** often match less well than personal ones; adding phone numbers can help.
- **Small lists** may not be large enough to serve on some networks.
- **Data protection rules** apply: upload only contacts you have the right to use for advertising.
- **GA4 audiences** depend on the GA4 link and sharing settings (lesson 6).

## How do you judge whether audiences help?

Add the audience columns in the Audiences report and compare conversion rate and cost per conversion for each observed audience against the campaign average. Where an audience performs clearly better or worse, discuss with the team whether a bid adjustment, a separate campaign or an exclusion makes sense. With Smart Bidding, audience signals are already used in bidding, so treat observation mainly as insight.

## A 30-minute audit for this lesson

1. List every audience and how it is applied.
2. Check Customer Match refresh dates and match rates.
3. Check customers are excluded from acquisition.
4. Check GA4 audiences used in Ads.
5. Confirm consent for uploaded contacts.

## Key terms

| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Customer Match | Uploading your own customer data to reach those people |
| Observation | Reporting on an audience without restricting reach |
| Targeting | Showing ads only to an audience |
| Membership duration | How long a person stays in a list |
| Match rate | The share of uploaded contacts Google matches |

## Common scenarios and fixes

**Customer Match list won't serve.** *Diagnosis:* Too few matched users. *Fix:* Combine lists, add phone numbers, or use observation.

**Customers keep clicking acquisition ads.** *Diagnosis:* No customer exclusion. *Fix:* Exclude the customer list.

**A GA4 audience doesn't appear in Ads.** *Diagnosis:* Link or sharing settings. *Fix:* Check the link and audience sharing (lesson 6).

## How do audiences work with Smart Bidding?

With Smart Bidding, Google already uses many signals, including audience membership, when it sets bids for each auction. That changes how you use audiences. Adding an audience as observation on a Smart Bidding campaign doesn't change bids directly, but it gives you reporting and can give bidding a clearer signal about who matters to you.

Targeting is different: it restricts who can see the ads. Use it where the campaign is built for a specific group, such as remarketing to past visitors or upsell campaigns to existing customers. Exclusions are the most direct control: they stop spend on people you don't want to pay for, such as current customers in an acquisition campaign.

Customer data is personal data. Upload only contacts you have the right to use for advertising, keep the export secure, and delete local copies after upload. Check Google's Customer Match policy before your first upload and whenever your consent wording changes.

## What should a first audience setup look like?

For most B2B accounts, a sensible starting point is: current customers as an exclusion in acquisition campaigns; sales-qualified opportunities as observation in Search and as a lookalike seed in Demand Gen; recent site visitors from GA4 as observation; and pricing-page visitors who didn't convert as a remarketing audience where you run one. Review the audience columns after a month and adjust. Keep the number of lists small enough that someone can explain what each one is for.

## Worked example: Ledgerline's customer exclusions

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details and numbers are illustrative.*

Ledgerline found existing customers searching its brand name to log in were clicking ads. It connected its CRM to Customer Match through Data Manager, excluded current customers from the brand acquisition campaign, and added open opportunities as Observation. The login traffic moved to organic results.

### Walkthrough: Ledgerline's audiences

1. Uploaded current customers as an exclusion for non-brand acquisition campaigns.
2. Uploaded sales-qualified opportunities as observation on Search, and as a seed for Demand Gen lookalikes (lesson 14).
3. Imported a GA4 audience of pricing-page visitors who didn't request a demo, used as observation.
4. Reviewed audience columns monthly.

## Try it yourself

1. List your audiences and their setting (observation, targeting, exclusion).
2. Check that customers are excluded from acquisition campaigns.
3. Check the match rate and last refresh date for each Customer Match list.

## Quick quiz

**1. What does observation do?**

*Answer:* It reports on an audience without restricting who sees the ads.

**2. What is the longest Customer Match membership?**

*Answer:* 540 days.

**3. Which list should be an exclusion in acquisition campaigns?**

*Answer:* Current customers.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Upload a current-customer list and exclude it from acquisition campaigns.
- Set a recurring refresh for Customer Match.
- Add GA4 high-intent audiences to Search as Observation.
- Check audience signals in each Performance Max asset group.
