**GA4 ecommerce reporting expects recommended events and an `items` array with SKU-level detail. In GTM you do not invent that structure in the tag — the site (or your ecommerce platform connector) pushes it to the data layer, and GA4 Event tags forward it. Marketers own the field checklist; developers own the push.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Use recommended names: `view_item`, `add_to_cart`, `begin_checkout`, `purchase`, and related list events as needed.
> - Require `transaction_id`, `value`, `currency` and `items` on purchase.
> - Clear `ecommerce` between pushes to prevent leakage.
> - Deduplicate purchases with transaction_id in GA4 and Ads.

## Essential payload shape

Google Analytics Help on ecommerce events describes event-level parameters and item-level parameters inside `items`. A purchase sketch:

```
dataLayer.push({ ecommerce: null });
dataLayer.push({
  event: 'purchase',
  ecommerce: {
    transaction_id: 'T-10029',
    value: 129.0,
    tax: 20.0,
    shipping: 0,
    currency: 'EUR',
    coupon: 'SPRING10',
    items: [{
      item_id: 'SKU-221',
      item_name: 'Ledgerline Pro annual',
      item_category: 'subscription',
      price: 129.0,
      quantity: 1
    }]
  }
});
```

GTM: Custom Event trigger `purchase` + GA4 Event tag Event Name `purchase` with ecommerce data read from the data layer (GA4 Event tag ecommerce options / parameters mapped per current UI).

## Event set for funnel analysis

| Event | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| view_item_list | Category / search results | Merchandising |
| select_item | Click product | Interest |
| view_item | Product detail | PDP engagement |
| add_to_cart | Add | Funnel |
| begin_checkout | Checkout start | Funnel |
| add_shipping_info / add_payment_info | Steps | Drop-off diagnosis |
| purchase | Payment success | Revenue |

SaaS marketers without a cart still benefit from `view_item` on pricing tiers and `purchase` on paid conversion if self-serve billing exists.

## GTM implementation tips

- One GA4 Event tag per ecommerce event name, or a carefully designed generic tag — clarity usually beats cleverness.
- Map currency explicitly; never assume.
- Include tax/shipping only when real.
- For Ads, pass the same transaction_id to Google Ads Conversion Tracking.

## QA purchases like finance is watching

1. Complete a test order on staging.
2. Preview: one `purchase` event.
3. DebugView: value and items correct.
4. Reload receipt page: no second purchase (or second with same transaction_id deduped).
5. Refunds: process is usually offline / measurement protocol / warehouse — do not expect the browser tag to reverse revenue automatically.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.*

Ledgerline’s self-serve checkout pushed `purchase` but omitted `transaction_id`. Reloads doubled revenue in GA4 for a week. Adding transaction_id and teaching support not to open receipt links in multiple browsers during tests fixed it. They also nulled `ecommerce` before each push after seeing add_to_cart items appear on a later begin_checkout in Preview.

### Walkthrough

1. Write the purchase JSON using a real SKU.
2. Implement push on order confirmation only.
3. Build GA4 Event tag + Ads conversion with transaction_id.
4. Run two test orders; confirm two IDs and correct values.
5. Reload receipt; confirm no inflation.

> **Pro move:** add a nightly check: GA4 purchase revenue vs payment provider — investigate >5% gaps.

## Item_id stability

Use SKUs that remain stable when marketing renames products. If `item_name` changes for SEO but `item_id` stays constant, year-over-year product reports survive. Put that requirement in the engineering brief.

## Refunds and cancellations

Browser GTM will not reliably reverse purchases when finance refunds later. Plan warehouse logic or Measurement Protocol / offline refunds with analytics engineering. Do not invent a "negative purchase" click tag as a finance system.

## Subscription SaaS nuances

For annual subscriptions, `purchase` value should match what finance calls revenue for that event (first invoice vs booked ARR). Misaligned definitions create executive distrust that no GTM tweak can fix. Hold a 30-minute definition meeting before the first purchase tag ships.

## Field checklist for engineering

| Field | Required on purchase? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| transaction_id | Yes | Unique per order |
| value | Yes | Match finance definition |
| currency | Yes | ISO code |
| items[].item_id | Yes | Stable SKU |
| items[].item_name | Recommended | Display name |
| items[].price | Recommended | Unit price |
| items[].quantity | Recommended | Integer |
| coupon | Optional | Campaign analysis |
| shipping / tax | Optional | If meaningful |

## Brand vs product taxonomy

If you sell through marketplaces or white-label, decide whether `item_brand` is you, the manufacturer, or the reseller. Inconsistent brand fields break brand reports and confuse product mix analysis.

## Testing without spending money

Use staging with payment provider test mode. If staging cannot reach production GA4, point a staging Measurement ID Constant via Lookup Table on hostname and keep a staging GA4 property. Never test purchases into production and then "filter them later" as your only plan — filters lag and humans forget.

## Marketplace and app-store caveats

When revenue happens in Apple/Google app stores or Shopify checkout on another domain, browser GTM on your marketing site will not see the purchase. Plan app SDKs, Shopify’s native GA4, or server-side collection. Cross-domain lesson helps when you do control the checkout host.

## Promo and list attribution fields

Recommended ecommerce events support creative and list name fields (for example item_list_name, promotion_name — confirm current parameter names in Analytics Help). If merchandising cares which carousel drove add_to_cart, engineering must push those fields at click time. GTM cannot invent list context later from the purchase alone.

## Currency and multi-market shops

One GA4 property with mixed EUR/USD purchases needs correct currency on every hit. Do not convert in GTM with a hard-coded rate. Let GA4 handle currency reporting settings; your job is sending the real charge currency and value from the order object.

## GTM tag settings for ecommerce events

On the GA4 Event tag for `purchase` (labels vary slightly by UI generation):

- Event Name: `purchase` (exact).
- Tell the tag to send ecommerce data from the data layer when that option exists — or map `transaction_id`, `value`, `currency` and items explicitly.
- Measurement ID: your Constant (or Google tag inherits settings if configured that way — confirm in your container which pattern you use).
- Trigger: Custom Event `purchase` only.

Avoid Page Path = `/receipt` as the only purchase trigger when the data layer already has a clean `purchase` event. Path triggers double-fire on reloads more often.

## Common ecommerce bugs in Preview

| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Items from prior product on checkout | Missing `ecommerce: null` | Null before each push |
| value = 0 | String vs number; wrong field | Push numeric value from order total |
| Two purchases one order | Reload / tag on Pay click | Fire on success; transaction_id |
| Missing currency | Assumed EUR in EU only | Always send ISO currency |
| Ads value ≠ GA4 value | Different tax inclusion | Align definitions with finance |

## Ledgerline SaaS note

*Fictional.* Ledgerline sells annual seats, not physical goods. They still use `purchase` with `items` containing plan SKUs so GA4 ecommerce purchases and item reports work. `add_to_cart` maps to "plan selected"; `begin_checkout` to billing form start. That vocabulary keeps recommended reports usable without a literal shopping cart.

## Validating items arrays in Preview

In GTM Preview, open the purchase event → Variables / Data Layer tab and expand `ecommerce.items`. Confirm each item has `item_id`, quantity ≥ 1, and prices that sum (roughly) to `value` given tax/shipping rules. If items is `undefined`, the GA4 ecommerce reports will look empty even though `purchase` count rises — a frequent "revenue without products" ticket.

## Try it yourself

If you lack ecommerce, implement `view_item` on pricing cards with item_id per plan. It teaches the same GTM pattern.

## Quick quiz

**1. Which purchase field prevents reload duplication?**

*Answer:* `transaction_id`.

**2. Why push `ecommerce: null` first?**

*Answer:* Clears previous ecommerce object so items do not leak.

**3. Where should purchase fire?**

*Answer:* On confirmed success, not on "Pay" button click.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Purchase field checklist agreed with eng/finance.
- At least one ecommerce event QA’d or deferred explicitly.

## Common questions

**Essential events?** Purchase first; add funnel events as needed.

**Why null ecommerce?** Prevent leakage between events.

**Shopify apps?** Verify they emit GA4-shaped data.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which ecommerce events are essential?

At minimum purchase (with transaction_id). Add view_item, add_to_cart and begin_checkout when funnels matter.

### Why clear ecommerce null?

To avoid previous items leaking into the next event's payload.

### Can Shopify apps replace this?

Sometimes. Still verify the data layer or GTM data model matches GA4 recommended fields.
