**Measure LinkedIn at three levels: platform metrics (LinkedIn post, Page and Campaign Manager analytics), site behaviour (GA4 with consistent UTMs, so LinkedIn traffic lands in Paid Social or Organic Social and key events are counted), and pipeline (CRM stages plus self-reported attribution). Use LinkedIn's dynamic URL parameters so every paid click carries campaign, ad set and ad names automatically. Then bring Campaign Manager exports and GA4 into one Looker Studio dashboard through a partner connector or Google Sheets.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - One UTM convention: utm_source=linkedin; utm_medium=paid_social for ads; social, company_page or newsletter for organic links.
> - Use the renamed dynamic parameters CAMPAIGN_NAME, AD_SET_NAME and AD_NAME in URL tracking.
> - LinkedIn and GA4 will disagree on conversions; that is expected.
> - Looker Studio has no native LinkedIn Ads connector from Google; use partners or Sheets.
> - Add "How did you hear about us?" to forms to capture dark social influence.

## What should you measure, and where?

| Level | Metrics | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Organic reach | Impressions, members reached, engagement rate, followers | Post analytics, Page analytics, creator analytics |
| Paid delivery | Impressions, CTR, CPM, CPC, frequency | Campaign Manager |
| Site behaviour | Sessions, engaged sessions, key events by source/medium | GA4 |
| Conversions | Leads, sign-ups, demos | Campaign Manager (Insight Tag, CAPI, Lead Gen Forms), GA4 key events |
| Pipeline | SQLs, opportunities, revenue | CRM, Companies Hub with CRM sync |
| Influence | "Saw you on LinkedIn" | Self-reported attribution |

## How should you tag LinkedIn links?

Use one convention across the team, matching the company Page and newsletter lessons (see [GA4 UTM campaign tagging](https://mentionx.ai/learn/ga4/ga4-utm-campaign-tagging)).

| Traffic | utm_source | utm_medium | utm_campaign | utm_content |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paid ads | linkedin | paid_social | Dynamic: CAMPAIGN_NAME | Dynamic: AD_NAME |
| Founder and employee posts | linkedin | social | topic-month | author |
| Company Page posts | linkedin | company_page | topic-month | page |
| Newsletter | linkedin | newsletter | newsletter-name | issue |

GA4's default channel group puts a social source with a medium matching paid patterns (such as paid_social) into Paid Social, and social sources with non-paid mediums (social, company_page, newsletter) into Organic Social (see [GA4 default channel group explained](https://mentionx.ai/learn/ga4/ga4-default-channel-group-explained)).

### How do dynamic parameters work?

In the ad set's URL tracking settings, add your UTM keys and choose LinkedIn's dynamic values. Since the October 2025 hierarchy rename, the values are ACCOUNT_ID and ACCOUNT_NAME, CAMPAIGN_ID and CAMPAIGN_NAME (formerly campaign group), AD_SET_ID and AD_SET_NAME (formerly campaign) and AD_ID and AD_NAME (formerly creative). Existing ad sets update automatically; new and edited ad sets must use the new names. Write the brace syntax exactly as Campaign Manager shows it.

Name things so they read well in GA4: lowercase, hyphens, no spaces, for example 2026q4-pipeline-finance.

## How do you set up GA4 for LinkedIn?

1. **Key events:** mark demo_submitted, trial_signup and download as key events (see [GA4 key events setup](https://mentionx.ai/learn/ga4/ga4-key-events-setup)).
2. **Exploration:** session source/medium = linkedin / paid_social, broken down by session campaign and manual ad content.
3. **Audience:** LinkedIn visitors who did not convert, for remarketing elsewhere if your consent allows.
4. **Compare** GA4 key events with Campaign Manager conversions monthly.

| Why numbers differ | Explanation |
|---|---|
| View-through conversions | LinkedIn counts conversions after an ad view; GA4 cannot see views |
| Attribution windows | LinkedIn uses its conversion windows; GA4 uses its attribution model |
| Lead Gen Forms | Leads happen on LinkedIn, not your site |
| Consent and blockers | GA4 loses some sessions; CAPI recovers some for LinkedIn |
| Cross-device | LinkedIn matches signed-in members |

## How do you build the Looker Studio dashboard?

1. **Data sources:** GA4 connector (native); LinkedIn Ads via a partner connector, or a scheduled export to Google Sheets or BigQuery; CRM export in Sheets.
2. **Page 1, Summary:** spend, impressions, clicks, leads, qualified leads, cost per qualified lead, pipeline.
3. **Page 2, Paid:** by campaign and ad set; CTR, CPM, frequency, conversions.
4. **Page 3, Site:** GA4 sessions and key events for linkedin / paid_social and linkedin / social.
5. **Page 4, Organic:** monthly Page and founder metrics (manual Sheets entry is fine).
6. **Blend** spend from LinkedIn with qualified leads from CRM by campaign name (see [Looker Studio blending data sources](https://mentionx.ai/learn/looker-studio/looker-studio-blending-data-sources)).

| Chart | Dimension | Metric |
|---|---|---|
| Scorecards | — | Spend, qualified leads, cost per qualified lead |
| Time series | Week | Spend and qualified leads |
| Table | Campaign / ad set | Spend, CTR, leads, qualified rate |
| Bar | Ad name | Qualified leads |

> **Pro move:** put the hidden field AD_NAME from Lead Gen Forms and utm_content from site forms into the same CRM property. Then one Looker Studio table shows qualified leads by ad across both on-LinkedIn and on-site conversions, which neither Campaign Manager nor GA4 can show alone.

## How do you measure organic influence?

Many buyers see your founder's posts and later search your brand or ask an AI assistant, so links undercount LinkedIn. Add a free-text "How did you hear about us?" field to demo forms (see [self-reported attribution on forms](https://mentionx.ai/learn/measurement/self-reported-attribution-adding-chatgpt-forms)), tag answers monthly and track "LinkedIn" mentions next to branded search and direct traffic.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Competitors A to D and all figures are illustrative.*

Ledgerline's LinkedIn traffic showed up in GA4 as "linkedin.com / referral" and "lnkd.in", with no campaign detail.

### Walkthrough

1. **UTM rules** documented; dynamic parameters on all ad sets.
2. **Key events** set in GA4.
3. **Export:** Campaign Manager to Sheets weekly through a connector.
4. **Dashboard:** four pages as above.
5. **Self-reported:** 22% of demo requests mention LinkedIn or the founder (illustrative), versus 9% attributed by last click.
6. **Decision:** budget held steady despite modest last-click numbers.

## Common mistakes

- Mixing "LinkedIn", "linkedin.com" and "li" as sources.
- Using old CREATIVE parameters in new ad sets.
- Expecting GA4 to match Campaign Manager.
- Measuring only last click for founder-led content.
- Dashboards without cost per qualified lead.

## Try it yourself

Write your UTM convention, apply dynamic parameters to one ad set, and build a one-page Looker Studio report with spend, leads and GA4 key events for LinkedIn.

## Quick quiz

**1. What utm_medium puts LinkedIn ads into GA4 Paid Social?**
*Answer:* A paid medium such as paid_social.

**2. What replaced CREATIVE_NAME?**
*Answer:* AD_NAME.

**3. Why can LinkedIn report more conversions than GA4?**
*Answer:* View-through conversions, its own windows, Lead Gen Forms and cross-device matching.

**4. Does Google provide a native LinkedIn Ads connector for Looker Studio?**
*Answer:* No.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- UTM convention shared and in use.
- Dashboard with cost per qualified lead.
- Self-reported attribution on forms.

## Common questions

**How do I track LinkedIn ads in GA4?** Add UTM parameters in the ad set's URL tracking settings, using utm_source=linkedin and utm_medium=paid_social so GA4 classes the traffic as Paid Social, and use LinkedIn's dynamic parameters for campaign and ad names. Mark your conversions as key events in GA4.

**Is there a free LinkedIn Ads connector for Looker Studio?** Google does not offer a native LinkedIn Ads connector. Use a partner connector, or export Campaign Manager data to Google Sheets or BigQuery and connect that to Looker Studio.

**Why do LinkedIn and GA4 conversion numbers differ?** LinkedIn counts view-through and click-through conversions in its own attribution windows and can match members across devices, while GA4 uses its own attribution model, sessions and consent-limited data. Expect differences and use each for what it measures best.

**How do I measure organic LinkedIn posts?** Use LinkedIn's post and Page analytics for impressions and engagement, add UTM links where you link out, and track self-reported attribution such as a "How did you hear about us?" field to capture influence that links miss.
