**Social selling on LinkedIn works when you earn attention before you ask for time: build a target list, engage with prospects' posts, connect with a specific reason, send a short helpful message and only suggest a call when there is a clear signal. Do it by hand. LinkedIn's User Agreement (section 8.2) bans bots, scrapers and browser extensions that automate invitations, messages, comments or likes, and LinkedIn said in March 2026 it is curbing third-party automation. Keep invitations targeted because LinkedIn applies an unpublished weekly limit, and track replies and meetings, not messages sent.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - No automation: tools that send invitations or messages for you break LinkedIn's User Agreement 8.2.
> - Warm first: comment on a prospect's posts, view their profile, then connect with a specific reason.
> - LinkedIn has a weekly invitation limit it does not publish; send fewer, better requests and withdraw stale ones.
> - InMail credits renew monthly and are returned if the recipient responds within 90 days.
> - Measure acceptance rate, reply rate and meetings from target accounts.

*Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against LinkedIn Help on prohibited software, InMail credits and invitation limits, the LinkedIn User Agreement, the Professional Community Policies and LinkedIn's March 2026 feed announcement, cited in Sources. Message templates and cadences are practitioner guidance. This is not legal advice. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.*

## What is social selling, and what is not?

| Social selling | Not social selling |
|---|---|
| Being visibly helpful to a defined set of buyers | Mass connection requests followed by pitches |
| Personal messages tied to a real signal | Templated "I'd love to pick your brain" sequences |
| Commenting on prospects' posts with substance | Auto-likes and auto-comments |
| Sharing useful resources when relevant | Attaching a deck to the first message |

## What does LinkedIn prohibit?

LinkedIn Help's "Prohibited software and extensions" page and User Agreement section 8.2 prohibit crawlers, bots, browser plug-ins, extensions and other software that scrape, modify the appearance of or automate activity on LinkedIn. That covers tools that:

- Send connection requests or messages automatically.
- Auto-view profiles, auto-like, auto-comment or auto-follow.
- Scrape profile data or contact details into spreadsheets.
- Run sequences of LinkedIn messages without you clicking send.

The Professional Community Policies also prohibit fake engagement. Accounts using these tools risk restriction. Sales Navigator's official CRM integrations are permitted (lesson 11).

## How do invitation and InMail limits work?

| Limit | What LinkedIn says | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly invitations | A weekly limit applies; LinkedIn does not publish the number | Official (no number) |
| Restriction length | Often about a week; up to a month with many pending invitations | Practitioner reports |
| InMail monthly credits | Premium Career 5, Premium Business 15, Sales Navigator Core 50 | Official |
| InMail accumulation cap | Premium Career 15, Premium Business 45, Sales Navigator 150 | Official |
| InMail credit back | When the recipient accepts, declines or replies within 90 days | Official |
| Follow-up InMail | Not possible until they respond to the first | Official |

**Hygiene steps:**

1. Withdraw invitations pending for more than three weeks (My Network, Manage, Sent).
2. Only invite people you have a reason to connect with.
3. Do not ask strangers to "add you as a friend"; LinkedIn may ask some recipients if they know you.

## What is the warm-up sequence?

Run this manually over two to three weeks per prospect.

| Step | Day | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | Follow the prospect and their company |
| 2 | 1 to 10 | Leave one or two substantive comments on their posts (lesson 5) |
| 3 | After a comment exchange | Send a connection request with a note tied to that exchange |
| 4 | After acceptance | Thank them; share one relevant resource without a pitch |
| 5 | When a signal appears | Suggest a short call, with a clear reason |

### Which signals justify a message?

- They commented on or reshared your post.
- They viewed your profile after you commented.
- Their company announced funding, hiring for a relevant role or a new leader.
- They posted about a problem you solve.
- They registered for your Event or downloaded a resource (with consent).

## What should messages say?

**Connection note (under 300 characters is a good rule):**

> "Hi Maya, your point about approver holidays stalling month-end matched what we see with mid-market teams. I post about AP automation and would like to follow your take on it. Happy to connect."

**After acceptance:**

> "Thanks for connecting. We just published a checklist on approval delegation, link here if useful. No pitch, I just thought of your post."

**When a signal appears:**

> "Saw your team is hiring two AP specialists. Often that's a sign approvals are piling up. If it's useful, I can share how a similar firm cut approval time without adding headcount. 15 minutes next week?"

**Rules:** one idea per message, no attachments in the first message, no fake familiarity, stop after two unanswered follow-ups.

## How do you stay compliant with privacy rules?

- Keep outreach relevant to the person's professional role.
- Do not copy LinkedIn profile data into other systems by scraping; use official integrations.
- Honour any request to stop.
- Only send marketing email to people who gave consent or where your legal basis allows it (see [compliant cold outbound email](https://mentionx.ai/learn/email/email-cold-outbound-compliant)).

This is not legal advice; requirements differ across the EU, UK, US and other markets.

> **Pro move:** turn your marketing content into sales triggers. Every week, export the list of people from target accounts who engaged with the founder's or Page's posts (from post analytics and notifications, by hand) and give it to SDRs with the post they engaged with. The SDR's first message references that post. Warm, relevant and completely manual, and it usually beats any cold sequence.

## How do you measure social selling?

| Metric | Healthy direction |
|---|---|
| Connection acceptance rate | Rising (targeting and notes improving) |
| Reply rate to first message | Rising |
| Meetings booked from LinkedIn | Rising |
| Pending invitations | Kept low |
| Social Selling Index (SSI) | Optional internal indicator; not a business outcome |

LinkedIn's SSI dashboard scores professional brand, finding people, engaging with insights and building relationships. Use it as a coaching aid, not a target.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Competitors A to D and all figures are illustrative.*

Ledgerline's SDRs used a browser extension to send 100 invitations a day; two accounts were restricted. Competitor D still runs automated sequences and has a poor reputation in finance communities.

### Walkthrough

1. **Stop:** extension removed; all pending invitations older than three weeks withdrawn.
2. **List:** 300 finance leaders at 120 target accounts in Sales Navigator (lesson 11).
3. **Warm-up:** each SDR comments on 10 prospect posts a day.
4. **Notes:** personalised connection notes referencing a comment or post.
5. **Signals:** weekly engagement export from the founder's posts.
6. **Results after 8 weeks (illustrative):** acceptance rate from 22% to 58%, reply rate from 4% to 19% and 17 meetings, with no restrictions.

## Common mistakes

- Using automation or scraping tools.
- Pitching in the connection note.
- Ignoring pending invitations until LinkedIn restricts the account.
- Sending a deck in the first message.
- Following up more than twice.

## Try it yourself

Pick 20 target prospects. Follow them, comment on two posts each over a week and send connection notes that reference your exchange. Track acceptance and replies in a sheet.

## Quick quiz

**1. Which section of LinkedIn's User Agreement covers automation and scraping?**
*Answer:* Section 8.2.

**2. Does LinkedIn publish its weekly invitation limit?**
*Answer:* No.

**3. How many InMail credits can a Sales Navigator user accumulate?**
*Answer:* 150.

**4. When is an InMail credit returned?**

- A target list and a warm-up sequence.
- Message templates approved.
- Pending invitations cleaned.

## Common questions

**Are LinkedIn automation tools allowed?** No. LinkedIn's User Agreement section 8.2 and its Help Center prohibit crawlers, bots, browser plug-ins and extensions that scrape LinkedIn or automate activity such as sending invitations, messages, comments or likes. Using them risks account restriction.

**How many connection requests can I send a week?** LinkedIn applies a weekly invitation limit but does not publish the number. Practitioners report restrictions usually lift after about a week, and that many pending or ignored invitations increase the risk. Send fewer, better-targeted requests and withdraw old pending ones.

**How do InMail credits work?** InMail credits renew monthly. LinkedIn Help lists 5 a month for Premium Career, 15 for Premium Business and 50 for Sales Navigator Core, with accumulation caps of 15, 45 and 150. InMails that get a response within 90 days are credited back.

**Is LinkedIn outreach legal under GDPR?** It can be, but rules depend on your market, who you contact and how you process their data. Keep messages relevant to the person's role, honour opt-outs and do not scrape data into other tools. This is not legal advice; check with your counsel.
