**A readable theme does more for trust than another chart. Leadership decides in seconds whether a dashboard looks careful or chaotic. This lesson sets a simple brand kit for Data Studio reports: colour, type, spacing, cover page, page templates and an agency white-label path. You will also learn what not to decorate, because chartjunk hides the metric.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Lock **primary, secondary, positive, negative and neutral** colours.
> - One canvas size per report family; consistent margins and grid.
> - Cover page states audience, cadence, owner and freshness.
> - Scorecards before charts; charts before tables; notes in the footer.
> - Copy a master report instead of restyling from zero each time.

*Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Google Cloud Data Studio documentation, the Data Studio product page, the Looker Studio-is-Data-Studio blog post, connector help pages and the Analytics Help pages cited in Sources. Google renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.*

## Brand kit for Data Studio

| Token | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Primary | Brand blue or charcoal for titles |
| Accent | One bright colour for key scorecards |
| Positive / negative | Green / red used only for deltas |
| Background | White or near-white |
| Grid lines | Light grey, minimal |
| Fonts | One sans for titles, one for body; avoid novelty fonts |

Apply theme colours in Theme and layout. Set default chart palette so new charts inherit it.

## Page layouts that work in marketing

**Cover page.** Logo, report name, period, owner, distribution list, link to metric dictionary.

**Ops page.** Date control, scorecards, time series, channel table.

**Deep dive page.** Filters + one big table + one diagnostic chart.

**Appendix.** Definitions, join notes, connector register excerpt.

Keep vertical rhythm: 8 or 16 px spacing mentally. Align scorecards on a row. Do not scatter floating text boxes.

## Accessibility

- Contrast matters on projectors.
- Do not encode meaning with colour alone; add labels.
- Avoid tiny 8 pt footnotes as the only place critical caveats live — use 10-12 pt footer.

## Agency white-label checklist

1. Client logo on cover; your logo only if the contract allows.
2. Theme colours from the client brand guide, not your agency site.
3. Remove internal UTM debugging charts from the client view (use a separate ops report).
4. Confidentiality line in footer.
5. Filename and share title include client name + month.

See [lesson 15](https://mentionx.ai/learn/looker-studio/looker-studio-client-reporting-templates) for parameters that swap client brand.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.*

| Element | Choice |
|---|---|
| Canvas | 1200 × 900-ish landscape |
| Accent | Ledgerline teal on primary KPI only |
| Cover subtitle | "Weekly marketing — leadership" |
| Master file | `Ledgerline — REPORT MASTER (do not edit)` |

### Walkthrough

1. Design and ops spent one hour locking theme tokens.
2. Every new report was a copy of MASTER.
3. When Competitor D's deck looked louder, Ledgerline kept whitespace and won clarity in the QBR.
4. An intern once changed all scorecards to rainbow colours; MASTER + theme reset fixed it in minutes.
5. Agency partner reused the same spacing rules for client work.

> **Pro move:** put a "last reviewed" date on the cover next to the owner name. Stale dashboards lose political capital even when the data is fine.

## Grid and spacing standards

| Element | Standard |
|---|---|
| Page margin | Consistent on all pages |
| Scorecard row height | Equal heights in a row |
| Gap between cards | Same horizontal gap |
| Chart title size | One size for all charts |
| Footer | Reserved 40–60 px band |

## Colour usage rules

1. Accent colour on the single most important KPI only.
2. Green/red only for deltas and status, never for category series if you can label instead.
3. Channel colours stay stable across reports (Paid blue, Organic grey, AI Assistant teal — pick and document).

## Cover page copy block (template)

```
Report: {Name}
Audience: Leadership | Ops | Client
Period: {label}
Owner: {email}
Freshness: Ads/GSC 12h; GA4 {setting}
Dictionary: {link}
Confidential — {company}
```

Paste as a text box. Update parameters or manual fields at copy time.

## Accessibility pass (15 minutes)

1. View the page on a laptop at 100% zoom — no overlapping boxes.
2. Check contrast of grey labels on grey backgrounds.
3. Ensure status is not colour-only (include On track / Off track text).
4. Read the footer at a glance from 1 metre (projector test).
5. Tab through controls if you expect keyboard users on the ops page.

Ship the accessibility pass before the colour debate.

## Mobile and projector realities

Data Studio is desktop-first for most marketing teams. Still:

- Avoid tiny 8 pt footnotes as the only place caveats live.
- Test the exec page on a conference-room HDMI laptop at 1280-ish width.
- Do not rely on hover-only explanations for KPIs used in meetings.

If leadership mainly consumes scheduled PDFs, design for PDF: less interactivity dependence, more printed footnotes.

## Brand kit Sheet (optional)

| token | hex | usage |
|---|---|---|
| primary | #0B1F33 | titles |
| accent | #0D9488 | primary KPI |
| positive | #15803D | deltas up when good |
| negative | #B91C1C | deltas down when bad |

Agency MASTER references the kit; client copies overwrite hex values.

## Chart junk to delete on sight

- 3D effects
- Unnecessary pie charts with 12 slices (use bar)
- Background images that reduce contrast
- Multiple competing trend lines on one axis without labels
- Decorative icons that force extra vertical scroll on mobile PDF

Whitespace is not wasted space. It is how executives find the KPI that matters.

## Our view

Our view: branding is hierarchy, not decoration. One accent colour and a calm grid will outperform a loud template in every QBR that matters. Steal whitespace from chartjunk freely.

## Dark mode temptation

Skip dark themes for shared marketing PDFs unless the brand demands it. Projectors and printouts punish light-on-dark more often than they reward it. Keep dark mode for internal ops experiments only.

## Title casing

Pick sentence case or title case for chart titles and stick to it across the MASTER. Mixed casing reads as unfinished even when the data is perfect.

When in doubt, delete a chart before you add a colour.

## Common mistakes

- **Different fonts on every page.**
- **Five accent colours fighting for attention.**
- **No cover page**, so Slack screenshots lack context.
- **Editing MASTER directly.**
- **Decorative images** that force extra scrolling without insight.

## Try it yourself

Create a MASTER copy of your first dashboard. Set theme colours, add a cover page with owner and freshness, and rename the working copy for this week.

## Quick quiz

**1. Why copy a MASTER report?**

*Answer:* To keep theme, layout and footers consistent without restyling from scratch.

**2. Where should freshness be stated?**

*Answer:* Cover page and footer on every page.

**3. Should every scorecard use the accent colour?**

*Answer:* No. Reserve accent for the primary KPI so hierarchy stays clear.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- Theme tokens documented.
- Cover page on the production report.
- MASTER file exists and is protected.

## Common questions

**Can I save a theme in Looker Studio?** Yes. You can customise theme and layout settings for colours, fonts and chart styles, then reuse them when you copy a report or apply the same theme choices to new pages.

**What size should a marketing dashboard canvas be?** Pick one landscape size your stakeholders actually view (laptop or 16:9 for slides) and stick to it. Do not mix sizes inside one report without a reason.

**How do agencies white-label reports?** Use a cover page with the client logo, a shared colour theme, hide MentionX or agency chrome where contracted, and keep a footer with data freshness and confidentiality.
