**Google Import is a supported mapping and synchronisation system, not a guarantee of equivalent campaigns. Review the destination settings, unsupported entities, conversion architecture and future overwrite rules before allowing imported Microsoft campaigns to serve.**

> **Key takeaways**
> - Separate a one-time migration from a continuing scheduled synchronisation.
> - Inspect location, language, budget, bidding, negative and audience mappings.
> - Treat imported conversion definitions as distinct from working Microsoft measurement.
> - Check current AI Max inheritance and protect approved local changes from reimport.

*Checked 8 November 2026 (CET) against Microsoft import documentation and its August 2026 AI Max announcement. The large import article's main mappings were reviewed, not every annex. Ledgerline and all scenarios are fictional and illustrative.*

## What should you decide before opening the importer?

Choose an operating model first. A one-time migration establishes a destination account that Microsoft operators will maintain independently. A scheduled import keeps selected source entities synchronised and can overwrite destination decisions. Neither model is inherently better, but an unclear hybrid creates avoidable incidents.

Record the source account, destination account, campaign subset, import owner, review owner and intended schedule. Define which system is authoritative for budgets, bids, status, creative, tracking and targeting. If finance approves a Microsoft-specific budget, the import must not silently restore the Google value during the next run.

Start from a source export and a destination baseline. Keep campaign identifiers, settings and known exceptions so that later changes can be explained. Names alone are not reliable protection: linked entities can continue updating after renaming, and naming collisions can create unexpected merging behaviour.

The [Google Ads account checklist](https://mentionx.ai/learn/google-ads/google-ads-account-setup-checklist) remains useful for preparing the source. The Microsoft import documentation determines destination mappings. A healthy source account does not establish that the destination has the right currency, geography, measurement or distribution.

## Which mappings are most dangerous?

Rank mappings by the harm an unnoticed change could cause. Geographic expansion, restored spend, wrong conversion goals and unsupported creative deserve priority over cosmetic naming differences. Review the detailed import options rather than assuming a successful summary means faithful equivalence.

| Area | Mapping risk | Required destination evidence |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Locations | Unsupported targets can expand to a parent location | Actual targets, exclusions and fallback behaviour |
| Bids and budgets | Conversion, minimums or strategy fallback can alter values | Saved strategy, amount, currency and schedule |
| Negatives | Google broad negatives map to Microsoft phrase negatives | Scope, semantics and list associations |
| Audiences | Definitions may transfer without the original population | Supported list type, UET association and readiness |
| Goals | Limited imports do not reproduce every Google or GA4 action | Microsoft goal, event source and bidding inclusion |
| Automation | Scheduled imports can restore rejected settings | Field ownership, schedule and overwrite rules |

Microsoft documents that imported values below supported minimums can be raised. Do not forecast a universal minimum price from this behaviour. Inspect the actual values and obtain approval if they exceed the intended envelope.

A source campaign's supported ad format also does not guarantee that its entire asset set transfers. Google video assets are not automatically imported as reusable Microsoft video files. Rights, format support and destination creative review remain separate tasks.

## How can location and language mappings go wrong?

Microsoft documents parent-location expansion for unsupported geographic targets. An advertiser intending a small service area can accidentally reach a larger one. Rejecting expansion is not sufficient by itself: if no valid locations remain, a campaign can be left without the intended geographic restriction unless the relevant pause protection is selected and verified.

Review mixed cases too. A campaign with several supported locations and one unsupported target may not trigger the same protection as a campaign whose entire target set is unsupported. Inspect the saved list and delivery eligibility rather than relying on a single importer checkbox.

Check advanced location intent, exclusions and language settings in the destination. A campaign aimed at people physically present in a delivery area is different from one also eligible for people expressing interest in it. Microsoft does not translate source ads merely because a language setting transfers.

Language can interact with campaign and ad-group settings, and behaviour differs by campaign type. Write the intended audience in plain language, then compare it with the actual Microsoft configuration. If the mapping cannot express the business requirement safely, leave the campaign paused and redesign it.

## What happens to bids, budgets and goals?

Currency differences and supported bid-strategy mappings can alter the destination. Microsoft's documentation includes fallback behaviour and notes that updating bid strategies is enabled by default for new and scheduled imports. The important question is not what the source label said, but what strategy is saved after the run.

Use current Microsoft bidding names. New standalone target-CPA and target-ROAS choices have been consolidated into Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value with optional targets, subject to documented legacy or portfolio exceptions. Older mapping examples should not override the actual current destination strategy.

Conversion-goal import is not universal. Microsoft documents limited availability for eligible Google-native online destination-URL goals, not a complete transfer of GA4, custom-event or hosted conversion architectures. Even where a definition imports, the Microsoft event source and UET implementation still need validation.

Inspect goal inclusion, counting, values, windows and attribution settings. A mapping that changes a model or excludes an important action can alter bidding even when the goal name looks familiar. Never treat “import completed” as evidence that purchase revenue is flowing correctly.

For Performance Max, inspect the actual goal and saved bidding state. Microsoft documents a click-focused fallback when suitable conversion measurement is absent. A campaign intended to optimise for profitable purchases should not serve under an unnoticed fallback simply because the source used value-based bidding.

## How do audiences and negatives differ after import?

Imported audience rules do not mean the source audience's people have moved to Microsoft. Some list types, including Google Analytics remarketing lists and customer lists, do not import through the same route. Supported website-rule definitions still depend on Microsoft measurement and eligible population.

Check each association's mode and exclusion role. A transferred audience can be present but not restricting delivery, or an exclusion can be absent. UET association is not proof that the tag exists on all relevant pages or that consent permits audience use.

Google broad negative keywords map to Microsoft phrase negatives, which do not reproduce every source behaviour. Microsoft's negative matching does not automatically expand synonyms, plurals or misspellings. Re-test important blocked and permitted searches with the destination semantics.

Shared lists introduce another risk. Imported names can merge content or change associations, affecting campaigns beyond the one an operator is reviewing. Inventory account-level, shared, campaign and ad-group layers. The [negative-keyword fundamentals lesson](https://mentionx.ai/learn/google-ads/google-ads-negative-keyword-strategy) explains the planning discipline, but Microsoft scope and matching must be checked independently.

## Why does AI Max require a new import check?

Microsoft's 27 August 2026 announcement states that scheduled Google imports can inherit AI Max settings. A schedule created before that announcement is not automatically governed by the team's old assumptions about keyword-only Search delivery.

Separate search-term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. Review the destination's actual enabled features, bid-strategy eligibility, brand controls, exclusions and URL boundaries. Existing responsive-search autogenerated text moving under a new label does not by itself prove that all broader AI Max features were intentionally enabled.

Do not copy Google's Dynamic Search Ads transition assumptions into Microsoft. Microsoft's announcement states that its DSA campaigns continue until further notice. An imported campaign's actual type and current destination behaviour are the evidence, not a source-platform migration headline.

Create an import release checklist that can be updated when mappings change. A previously approved schedule can introduce newly supported settings later. Assign someone to review relevant product notices and a sample destination after updates, rather than treating scheduled import as a permanently solved integration.

## How should a controlled cutover work?

Use a paused or otherwise non-serving review stage where supported and confirm the resulting status. Capture the import preview, selected options, summary and detailed errors. A skipped entity may be harmless, critical or evidence that a different campaign design is needed.

Compare intended and actual settings field by field for the highest-risk campaigns. Test final URLs, tracking templates, suffixes and Microsoft Click ID preservation through redirects. Microsoft can rewrite certain Google UTM-source values, but that does not prove every custom tracking system has been safely adapted.

Before enabling a schedule, document which local edits it may overwrite. If a Microsoft team needs a different location, budget or creative claim, change the import configuration or ownership model rather than repeatedly repairing the same field after every run.

> **Pro move:** Keep a “destination exceptions” sheet beside the import log. Each exception needs a reason, owner and protection mechanism. An exception without protection is merely a future overwrite waiting to happen.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline plans to import a Google campaign for office organisers. The illustrative source uses a small service area, a broad negative for free, a customer list and AI Max settings. The initial proposal is a nightly schedule with every update option enabled.

Review reveals that the service area needs a Microsoft fallback decision, the customer list is not transferable through that route, and the negative needs different semantic tests. Finance also wants a separate Microsoft budget. The team keeps the first import non-serving and writes explicit field ownership before considering a schedule.

### Walkthrough

1. Export source settings and record the destination's account currency and ownership.
2. Select the campaign subset and capture the import options before running the draft migration.
3. Inspect locations, language, status, budgets and actual saved bidding strategies.
4. Replace assumptions about audience transfer with a Microsoft-specific population plan.
5. Review AI Max components, generated-text controls and allowed landing pages.
6. Validate UET, purchase goals, revenue and tracking separately from the import summary.
7. Approve only the schedule fields that may legitimately remain source-controlled.

No campaign is activated in this exercise. The deliverable is a cutover decision with known gaps, not a successful-import screenshot presented as launch approval.

## Common mistakes

Renaming a destination campaign does not reliably detach its import relationship. Likewise, editing the local budget once does not prevent the next scheduled run from replacing it. Fix the ownership model, not just the symptom.

Another mistake is treating unsupported as equivalent to irrelevant. A missing customer audience or conversion source can change the commercial role of a campaign. Finally, avoid accepting a wider geographic fallback simply to make an error disappear; the tool's successful mapping may violate the merchant's actual delivery promise.

## Try it yourself

Create an import acceptance sheet for one fictional or authorised source campaign. Include source value, destination value, mapping confidence, financial or customer risk, owner and required test. Cover at least locations, language, distribution, budget, strategy, goals, audiences, negatives, AI Max and URLs.

Then simulate a scheduled run after a local budget reduction and a new URL exclusion. State which settings would survive and why. If the answer depends on memory rather than documented import options and logs, mark the schedule unapproved until an authorised operator verifies it.

## Quick quiz

**1. Does importing an audience definition transfer its Google population?**

*Answer:* No. Supported definitions, Microsoft event collection and eligible audience population are separate matters, and some source list types do not import.

**2. Can rejecting parent-location expansion still leave a dangerous result?**

*Answer:* Yes. Review what happens when no valid targets remain and use the relevant pause protection rather than assuming rejection creates safe restriction.

**3. Why should old scheduled imports be reviewed for AI Max?**

*Answer:* Microsoft's current announcement says scheduled Google imports can inherit AI Max settings, so older operating assumptions may no longer be sufficient.

## What proves that cutover is ready?

Require a reviewed destination diff, working measurement, approved targeting and spend, protected local exceptions and a named schedule owner. Leave unresolved campaigns non-serving until their gaps are addressed.

## Common questions

**Does Google Import reproduce all GA4 conversions?** No. Documented conversion-goal import is limited in availability and supported source types. Microsoft measurement and goal validation remain separate launch requirements.

**Why do local budgets change after a scheduled import?** The schedule can update source-controlled settings. Review import options, field ownership and logs so approved Microsoft exceptions are not repeatedly overwritten.

**How do Google broad negatives map to Microsoft?** Microsoft documents a mapping to phrase negatives. That is not equivalent semantics, so review variants, scope and shared-list associations after import.
