> - Steps checked against Perplexity's Help Center, blog and API docs in November 2026.

*Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against the Perplexity Help Center, Perplexity blog, Perplexity API docs and the outlets cited in Sources. Perplexity renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.*

## How is the track organised?

**Foundations (lessons 1-4).** How Perplexity retrieves and cites, what each plan includes, the difference between Search, Pro Search, Research and Model Council, and how to control sources with prompts and filters.

**Research workflows (lessons 5-8).** Competitor teardowns, market and audience research, content briefs, and shared Projects that keep a team's instructions, files and threads together.

**Automation (lessons 9-12).** Perplexity Computer and Automations, the Comet browser, the Agent API and Search API, and n8n workflows that put Perplexity research on a schedule.

**Getting cited (lessons 13-17).** Source selection, crawler access, content formats, earned media and the commercial surfaces (Shopping, Comet Plus and the end of ads).

**Measurement (lessons 18-20).** GA4 referral tracking, share-of-citation prompt tracking and a monthly routine with clear owners.

## Who is this track for?

Content marketers, SEO and AEO leads, product marketers, demand gen managers and marketing ops people. You might be using Perplexity to do research faster, or you might be responsible for how your brand shows up when buyers ask Perplexity. Many teams have to do both.

Each lesson has a Ledgerline worked example. Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company that competes with four rivals, called Competitor A to Competitor D. Each lesson also has a walkthrough, an exercise and a short quiz.

## What do you need?

- A Perplexity account. Free works for most lessons. Pro or a trial helps for Research, Computer and Projects.
- For lessons 11 and 12, a Perplexity API key from the API console and, optionally, an n8n instance (cloud or self-hosted).
- For lessons 14 and 18, access to your robots.txt, your CDN or WAF settings, and a GA4 property.
- A spreadsheet for the prompt set you will build in lesson 19.

*Our view:* the research half pays for itself in a week. The citation half takes longer, but it compounds, because the evidence you publish keeps getting cited long after the campaign ends.

> **Pro move:** before lesson 1, write down ten questions your buyers really ask. Use your sales call notes, not keyword tools. You will use the same ten questions in the research lessons, the content lessons and the tracking lessons, so your before-and-after comparison is honest.

## How this track pairs with the other tracks

Perplexity is one engine among several. The techniques overlap, but the details do not.

- Lessons 5-6 pair with [ChatGPT deep research for competitive intel](https://mentionx.ai/learn/chatgpt/chatgpt-deep-research-competitive-intel) and [ChatGPT market and audience research](https://mentionx.ai/learn/chatgpt/chatgpt-market-audience-research).
- Lesson 12 pairs with [n8n for Marketers](https://mentionx.ai/learn/n8n/n8n-for-marketers) and [n8n AI visibility monitoring](https://mentionx.ai/learn/n8n/n8n-ai-visibility-monitoring).
- Lesson 14 pairs with [PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User](https://mentionx.ai/learn/technical/perplexitybot-perplexity-user) and [configuring robots.txt for AI crawlers](https://mentionx.ai/learn/technical/configure-robots-txt-ai-crawlers).
- Lesson 18 pairs with [GA4 for Marketers](https://mentionx.ai/learn/ga4/ga4-for-marketers), the [AI Assistant channel regex](https://mentionx.ai/learn/ga4/ga4-ai-assistant-channel-regex) and [GTM AI referral traffic](https://mentionx.ai/learn/gtm/gtm-ai-referral-traffic-ga4).
- Lessons 13-16 pair with the engine guides [how to rank in Perplexity](https://mentionx.ai/learn/engines/perplexity/how-to-rank) and [how Perplexity picks sources](https://mentionx.ai/learn/engines/perplexity/picks-sources-citations).

## What done looks like

When you finish the track, your team should be able to show:

1. A Perplexity Project for marketing research with written instructions, shared files and named owners.
2. A repeatable competitor and market research method, with a dated source log.
3. A content brief template that starts from Perplexity's current citations.
4. A robots.txt and WAF configuration that deliberately allows PerplexityBot, plus a note on Perplexity-User.
5. A GA4 view where perplexity.ai sessions are visible and not lost in generic Referral.
6. A fixed prompt set, run monthly, with share of citations reported against Competitors A-D.
7. A backlog of content and earned-media fixes tied to specific prompts.

If any item is missing, go to the matching lesson.

## Five setups to build first

If you only have time for a few, these give most teams the quickest return:

1. A marketing research Project with instructions that set your source rules ([lesson 8](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-projects-teams)).
2. A one-page competitor teardown for each of your top four rivals ([lesson 5](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-competitor-research)).
3. A robots.txt and WAF check so PerplexityBot can reach your key pages ([lesson 14](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-perplexitybot-robots-waf)).
4. A GA4 channel rule or segment for perplexity.ai ([lesson 18](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-ga4-referral-tracking)).
5. A 30-prompt share-of-citation baseline ([lesson 19](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-share-of-citations-tracking)).

## How this track stays honest

We cite Perplexity's own documentation and reputable outlets, with access dates. Where a feature has been renamed (Spaces to Projects, Deep Research to Research, Sonar to the Agent API), we use the new name and give the old one once. We don't invent citation rates, click-through rates or ranking factors. Perplexity doesn't publish a ranking algorithm, so when we describe what tends to get cited, we label it as our view or point you to a test you can run. Ledgerline numbers are fictional.

## Study paths by role

**Content and SEO lead:** lessons 1, 3-4, 7, 13-16, 19. These cover research for briefs, then everything about earning citations.

**Product marketer:** lessons 1-6, 8, 15-17. These cover positioning research, competitor teardowns and how your product shows up in comparisons and Shopping.

**Marketing ops and analytics:** lessons 2, 9, 11-12, 14, 18-20. These cover plans and seats, automation, crawler access and measurement.

**Head of marketing:** lessons 1-2, 8, 13, 17, 19-20. These cover what it is, what it costs, how teams share it and how you will know it works.

## Time estimate

Expect 30-60 minutes per lesson if you do the exercise. The tracking lessons take longer the first time because you are building a baseline. After that, the monthly routine in lesson 20 takes about half a day.
