**In GA4, clicks on Perplexity citations usually arrive as source perplexity.ai and medium referral, without UTM parameters. The default channel group now has an AI Assistant channel (medium ai-assistant) for sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok, and it excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Perplexity is not named in that list, so keep a custom channel for perplexity.ai until your reports show it there. Then build a landing page and conversion report. Expect undercounting, because app visits and copied links can land in Direct, and many users never click. Treat GA4 as a floor, not the full picture.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Source perplexity.ai, medium referral is the main signal. Perplexity doesn't add UTMs to citation links.
> - Build a custom channel group with an "AI assistants" channel placed above Referral.
> - Report landing pages, engaged sessions and key events for the AI channel.
> - Don't add UTMs to canonical URLs to "catch" Perplexity. It corrupts other data.
> - Pair GA4 data with citation tracking ([lesson 19](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-share-of-citations-tracking)) and "how did you hear about us" fields.

*Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against the Perplexity Help Center, Perplexity blog, Perplexity API docs and the outlets cited in Sources. Perplexity renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.*

## How does Perplexity traffic arrive?

| Path | What GA4 usually records |
|---|---|
| Click on a citation in the web app | Source perplexity.ai, medium referral |
| Click inside the Comet browser | Usually perplexity.ai referral, but check your own data |
| Mobile app or desktop app | Often perplexity.ai, but sometimes no referrer, so it lands in Direct |
| User copies a link and pastes it | Direct |
| Comet agent visits a page for the user | May not execute analytics like a human visit. Treat as unknown |
| PerplexityBot crawl | Not in GA4 (bots don't run your tags). Check server logs |

Perplexity's own help centre and crawler docs describe the bots. For human-visit referrers, rely on your own GA4 data, because behaviour varies by app version.

## How do you find Perplexity in GA4 today?

1. Go to **Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition**.
2. Change the primary dimension to **Session source / medium**.
3. Search for "perplexity".
4. Add **Landing page** as a secondary dimension.

Or in Explore, build a free-form exploration with these settings:

- **Dimensions:** session source, landing page, session default channel group
- **Metrics:** sessions, engaged sessions, key events, total revenue (if relevant)
- **Filter:** session source contains "perplexity"

## How do you build an AI channel?

GA4's default channel group won't always isolate AI assistants. A custom channel group lets you set rules and their order.

1. **Admin > Data display > Channel groups > Create new channel group.**
2. Add a channel called **AI assistants.**
3. Set the condition to source matches regex, for example:

```
perplexity\.ai|chatgpt\.com|chat\.openai\.com|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com|claude\.ai
```

4. **Move it above Referral** so these sessions aren't caught by the Referral rule first.
5. Save it and use it as a dimension in reports and explorations.

Custom channel groups apply retroactively in reports, which makes before and after comparisons easier.

For a separate Perplexity row, add a channel such as **AI: Perplexity** with source matching `perplexity`, placed above the general AI channel.

For the full setup across engines, see [the AI Assistant channel regex](https://mentionx.ai/learn/ga4/ga4-ai-assistant-channel-regex), [GA4 custom channel group for AI referrals](https://mentionx.ai/learn/measurement/ga4-custom-channel-group-ai-referrals) and [Track AI traffic in GA4](https://mentionx.ai/learn/measurement/track-ai-traffic-ga4). The GTM side is covered in [AI referral traffic in GA4 with GTM](https://mentionx.ai/learn/gtm/gtm-ai-referral-traffic-ga4).

> **Pro move:** check your unwanted referrals list in GA4 (Admin > Data streams > Configure tag settings). Agencies sometimes add broad patterns during cleanups that catch AI hostnames and turn them into Direct. Remove them, then compare a month before and after.

## What should the report show?

| Metric | Why |
|---|---|
| Sessions from Perplexity | Volume, the floor |
| Engaged session rate | Quality versus other channels |
| Landing pages | Which pages Perplexity cites and users click |
| Key events (demo, trial, signup) | Business value |
| Assisted conversions (attribution paths) | Perplexity often appears early in a journey |
| Trend by month | Direction matters more than one month's number |

## Why is Perplexity traffic undercounted?

- **Zero-click reading.** The answer satisfies the user.
- **Referrer loss.** Apps and copied links show as Direct.
- **Consent.** Users who decline analytics cookies may not be counted, depending on your consent mode setup.
- **Later visits.** Users read in Perplexity and return days later by typing your name, which shows as Direct or branded search.

Read more in [Why AI referral traffic is undercounted](https://mentionx.ai/learn/measurement/ai-referral-traffic-undercounted).

## How do you fill the gaps?

1. **Self-reported attribution.** Add "Perplexity" or "AI assistant" to the "how did you hear about us" field on demo forms.
2. **Branded search trend.** Watch Search Console for brand queries alongside citation share.
3. **Citation share.** Measure whether you're cited, not only whether people click ([lesson 19](https://mentionx.ai/learn/perplexity/perplexity-share-of-citations-tracking)).
4. **Landing page match.** Compare the pages Perplexity cites with the pages that get Perplexity sessions.

## Should you add UTMs?

Only on links you control:

- **Yes:** links in outputs you generate with the Agent API, in newsletters and in sales follow-ups.
- **No:** canonical URLs, sitemaps or links in content you hope gets cited. Perplexity links to what it finds, so UTMs there leak into all traffic and break your other channels.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

*Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.*

Ledgerline's marketing lead wanted to know if Perplexity citations were driving demos.

| Check | Finding (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Source / medium contains "perplexity" | Present, small volume |
| Unwanted referrals | A broad pattern was catching AI hostnames. Removed |
| Custom channel group | "AI: Perplexity" and "AI assistants" added above Referral |
| Top landing pages | AP automation guide, pricing page, comparison page versus Competitor B |
| Demo form field | "AI assistant (ChatGPT, Perplexity, etc.)" option added |

### Walkthrough

1. Pulled source / medium for 90 days.
2. Fixed the unwanted referrals list.
3. Built the custom channel group with the regex above.
4. Created an exploration with landing pages and demo requests.
5. Added the self-reported option to the demo form.
6. Linked the monthly report to citation share, so traffic and citations were reviewed together.

After two months, the team saw Perplexity sessions concentrated on the pricing and comparison pages. That matched the pages Perplexity cited most, and it confirmed where to invest.

## Common mistakes

- **Relying on default channels.** AI visits may hide in Referral.
- **UTMs on canonical URLs.**
- **Judging Perplexity by clicks only.**
- **Ignoring the unwanted referrals list.**
- **Hardcoding a regex once.** New AI hostnames appear, so review it quarterly.

## Try it yourself

Search source / medium for "perplexity" over 90 days, note the top five landing pages, then create the custom channel group and compare its numbers against Referral.

## Quick quiz

**1. What source and medium do Perplexity clicks usually show?**

*Answer:* perplexity.ai / referral.

**2. Where must the AI channel sit in a custom channel group?**

*Answer:* Above Referral.

**3. Why not add UTMs to canonical URLs?**

*Answer:* Because they would leak into all traffic and corrupt attribution.

## What should you check before the next lesson?

- An AI channel exists and sits above Referral.
- Your unwanted referrals list doesn't catch AI hostnames.
- A demo form option for AI assistants is live.

## Common questions

**How does Perplexity traffic show up in GA4?** Clicks on Perplexity citations usually arrive with perplexity.ai as the source and referral as the medium. Some visits, such as app traffic or copied links, arrive with no referrer and land in Direct.

**Should I add UTM parameters for Perplexity?** Not to your canonical URLs. Perplexity links to the page it cites, so UTMs on canonical URLs would leak into every channel. Use UTMs only on links you control, such as in an API or agent output.

**Why is Perplexity traffic small compared with its influence?** Many users read the answer and never click, and some clicks lose their referrer. Pair referral data with citation tracking and self-reported attribution for a fuller picture.
