**A Shopify promotion is a set of commercial rules, not just a discount amount. Define who and what qualifies, how offers combine, which channels support them and what contribution remains. Test eligible and ineligible carts before publishing language that customers will rely on, and keep promotional claims consistent with the configured checkout.**

> **Key takeaways**
>
> - Design the customer purpose and economics before the code.
> - Review product, order and shipping discount classes separately.
> - Configure compatible combinations on every relevant discount.
> - Test boundaries, market conditions and the end of the promotion.

## What job should the promotion perform?

Begin with a specific customer and merchant purpose. A promotion might introduce an appropriate first purchase, help clear a genuinely changing assortment or make a useful multi-item order more attractive. "Increase sales" is too broad because it does not establish which orders are desirable or what the merchant can afford.

Describe the behaviour you want without assuming a discount is the only answer. Clearer compatibility information, a useful bundle or a more understandable delivery offer may address the actual barrier. Discounting a product that shoppers do not understand can reduce revenue without resolving the reason they hesitate.

Record the eligible products, customer conditions, markets, dates and exclusions in a promotion brief. Explain why the offer is appropriate for those conditions. A code created without a brief can spread beyond its intended audience while the team has no agreed definition of success or failure.

Separate customer-facing reference prices from internal margin calculations. Compare-at prices and promotional claims need to be truthful and appropriate under applicable rules. A configured field does not establish that a legal reference-price claim is valid. Obtain suitable review rather than inflating a comparison price to make a saving appear larger.

## How should promotional economics be calculated?

Use a consistent tax basis and distinguish product revenue from amounts collected for taxes or other charges. Calculate the effect of the offer on contribution, not only the visible percentage reduction. Include relevant product cost, fulfilment, payment fees, expected reversals and any shipping subsidy.

For illustration only, suppose an order has EUR 80 of undiscounted product revenue excluding tax. A 20% product-revenue reduction leaves EUR 64. With fictional product cost of EUR 28, variable fulfilment and payment costs of EUR 12, and a returns allowance of EUR 4, contribution before acquisition is EUR 20. If acquisition costs EUR 30, the order contributes negative EUR 10 before fixed costs.

That example is not a recommended discount, cost model or acquisition benchmark. Its purpose is to show why a campaign can produce orders while weakening economics. Use the merchant's actual cost definitions and involve finance or the owner when deciding what must be included.

Model plausible combinations and basket changes. Customers may add a low-margin product, use another permitted code or qualify for subsidised shipping. A promotion should be reviewed under those ordinary behaviours, not only the ideal basket in a planning spreadsheet. Keep uncertainty visible where returns or repeat contribution are not yet known.

## How do Shopify discount classes interact?

Shopify distinguishes product discounts, order discounts and shipping discounts. Combination settings refer to these classes. Product discounts apply before the order subtotal used for order discounts, and shipping discounts apply after the relevant product and order calculations. The class matters even when customer-facing wording makes two offers sound similar.

Both relevant discounts must allow the intended combination. Enabling a combination on one side is not enough. Review automatic discounts as well as codes, because an offer the shopper did not manually enter can still affect the cart. A failed combination may reflect active rules rather than a broken code.

| Combination question | Required review |
|---|---|
| Product plus shipping | Eligibility and reciprocal class settings |
| Product plus order | Store eligibility and compatible configuration |
| Multiple order discounts | Eligibility and actual calculation behaviour |
| Product discounts on the same item | Current Shopify Plus requirement and setup |
| Multiple shipping discounts | Not supported as stacked shipping discounts |

The current documentation has specific eligibility conditions for product-plus-order and multiple-order combinations. Multiple product discounts on the same line item require Shopify Plus. Do not generalise from one supported combination to every possible stack, and do not use outdated checkout customisation as a new implementation recommendation.

## What should be tested about the calculation?

Use simple representative carts whose expected values can be checked independently. For illustration, a EUR 100 product amount excluding tax with an eligible 10% product discount becomes EUR 90. An eligible 20% order discount on that revised subtotal removes EUR 18, leaving EUR 72 before other applicable charges. This fictional example is not the same as simply adding every displayed percentage.

Multiple percentage order discounts have their own documented behaviour: Shopify calculates those percentages on the same relevant subtotal, rather than treating them as a universal sequential percentage formula. Read the current calculation rules and test the actual configured classes. Avoid teaching one arithmetic shortcut for all discount combinations.

Check the best-discount outcome when offers cannot combine. Shopify can apply the better eligible discount or combination for the cart. The fact that a customer's entered code is not the final applied saving does not automatically mean the system failed. Customer wording should avoid promising an incompatible stack.

Test the boundaries around minimum amounts, quantities, customer conditions, product exclusions and dates. Include a cart just below the threshold and one just above it. Check the selected currency and market where relevant. A correct example basket does not establish that the full rule behaves as intended.

## How do channels, bundles and markets change the review?

A discount working in the Online Store does not prove identical behaviour in every external checkout or sales channel. Shopify's combination documentation names supported contexts and limitations. Agentic shopping documentation has separate checkout capabilities. Verify the exact channel and offer rather than claiming universal combination parity.

Bundles need a distinct check. Shopify's bundle guidance says product- or collection-specific discounts must include the bundle parent where applicable, not merely component products. Discounts can be allocated to components for order handling. A customer-facing bundle saving and a checkout discount are also different commercial concepts and should not be confused.

Market currency introduces another dependency. Shopify's markets guidance explains that fixed-amount discounts in the store currency can be converted for another currency. Do not assume the same displayed amount or rounding in every market. Review the actual customer offer and obtain appropriate financial and legal input for local presentation.

Keep availability and shipping conditions aligned. A promotion aimed at a destination the store cannot serve creates a poor experience even when the code itself is valid. Operations should approve any shipping subsidy or delivery promise, and the campaign owner should verify the destination page in the targeted market.

## How should a promotion be released and ended?

Build a test matrix with normal, boundary and conflicting conditions. Use approved procedures and synthetic data where possible. Shopify documents reviewing discounts through checkout without completing payment as one testing option. Do not make real purchases or alter customer orders casually to validate a marketing idea.

Prepare the campaign surfaces together: announcement, product or collection destination, email, advertising and support explanation. Each should state the same scope and important conditions. The support team needs a clear way to explain why a cart does or does not qualify without inventing exceptions.

Current Shopify Rollouts can schedule or test discount activation, subject to plan and rollout requirements. The discount's own dates and combination settings still matter. A rollout is not a separate rule system that automatically fixes contradictory promotion configuration, and experiment codes can introduce sharing or contamination concerns.

Plan the end state. Remove or update expired messages, review lingering code distribution and inspect old destinations. Record what happened using contribution, suitable orders and customer issues, not just redemption count. A redeemed code can subsidise an order that would have occurred anyway, so attributed sales are not automatically incremental sales.

> **Pro move:** Give support the same test matrix used for release. It creates a shared explanation of valid and invalid carts and makes unexpected customer reports easier to diagnose.

## Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline proposes an illustrative planner promotion with a product discount and free shipping. Another welcome offer is already active. The team initially reviews only a planner-only basket and assumes the offers will stack exactly as the campaign headline suggests.

The promotion owner creates a rule brief and checks contribution after the expected shipping subsidy. Finance flags that an additional order discount could make some baskets unattractive. These are fictional planning observations, not real store economics.

### Walkthrough

The operator reviews each discount's class and reciprocal combination settings. The test set includes the planner alone, the planner with an accessory, an ineligible item, a threshold boundary and a customer entering the welcome code. Expected values are calculated before the checkout review.

The team discovers that its initial headline implies a combination it does not intend to permit. It changes the wording and configuration together, then rechecks both. It also tests a bundle separately rather than assuming component eligibility is enough.

The release record includes dates, destinations, support guidance and the post-promotion state. The review will compare contribution and customer issues as well as redemptions. It will not call every discounted order newly created demand.

## Common mistakes

A common mistake is deciding the percentage first and checking margin later. This can create a promotion that is difficult to withdraw once creative and customer expectations are established. Build the economics and scope before production.

Another is enabling a combination on only one discount or ignoring active automatic offers. Review the full cart rule environment, not just the code currently being edited. Keep channel and plan limitations visible in the acceptance record.

Finally, do not use false scarcity, inflated reference prices or hidden exclusions to make an offer appear stronger. Accurate configuration and truthful communication are separate requirements, and a promotion needs both.

## Try it yourself

Write a promotion brief for one product family. State the customer purpose, eligible items, dates, markets, exclusions and contribution assumptions. Label hypothetical figures clearly and keep the tax basis consistent.

Create a calculation sheet and cart matrix covering a normal basket, threshold boundaries, an excluded item, another active offer and a relevant bundle or market case. Identify each discount class and the combination settings that require review.

Prepare release and end-state checklists for campaign surfaces and support. Add a measurement note distinguishing redemption, attributed sales, contribution and incrementality. The artefact should make it possible to reject a financially weak promotion before it reaches customers.

## Quick quiz

**1. Is one discount's combination setting enough for a stack?**

*Answer:* No. The relevant discounts must permit the intended combination and meet applicable eligibility rules.

**2. Are multiple product discounts on the same item universally available?**

*Answer:* No. The checked documentation requires Shopify Plus for that configuration.

**3. Are redeemed promotional orders automatically incremental?**

*Answer:* No. Some customers might have purchased without the offer, so incrementality needs separate evidence.

## Your promotion readiness check

The promotion is ready when scope, calculation, economics and customer wording agree across the tested conditions. Keep the test matrix and end-state plan with the campaign record. The objective is a truthful, sustainable offer, not the largest-looking saving or the highest redemption count.
