Generative Engine Optimization Courses Compared
The best GEO course is the one that matches your goal and makes you practise. Free courses from HubSpot, Surfer and Semrush cover the fundamentals in under three hours each. Paid programmes add hours, exams or structure, but not obviously better content. Whichever you choose, pair it with a real project: measuring a brand's AI visibility and improving one page.
Disclosure: MentionX publishes this page and runs its own learning paths (described below). Course details and prices were checked on official pages on 30 October 2026 (CET) and change often.
How should you compare GEO courses?
| Criterion | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Goal fit | Strategy, hands-on execution, or leadership reporting? |
| Depth | Does it go beyond definitions to measurement and variance? |
| Practice | Do you do real work, or just watch videos? |
| Neutrality | How much is product training for the vendor's own tool? |
| Currency | When was it last updated? |
| Time and cost | Is the time you'll spend justified? |

What do the free courses cover?
- HubSpot AEO Fundamentals: how answer engines select content; AEO metrics such as visibility score, share of voice, sentiment and citation rate; a strategic framework (HubSpot). The German course page also lists E-E-A-T, keyword research for AI visibility, and measurement with Search Console and GA4 (HubSpot).
- Surfer masterclass: structuring content for AI discovery, schema and entity signals, topical authority and digital PR, measuring AI visibility, and a team workflow (Surfer).
- Semrush AI Search OS: auditing four layers of brand visibility (discoverability, clarity, authority and trust), KPIs, ownership and a 90-day action plan (Semrush).
Where do vendor courses lean on their products?
That's natural, and it's useful if you use the tool:
| Course | Product emphasis |
|---|---|
| Implementing AEO With HubSpot | HubSpot's AEO tool and dashboard (HubSpot) |
| Semrush AI Search courses | Walkthroughs of the AI Visibility Toolkit (Semrush) |
| Surfer masterclass | Workflow-focused; check for tool demos |
| MentionX paths | Capstone uses a MentionX free account |
If you don't use the tool, choose the product-agnostic option or skip the tool-specific lessons.
Which course should you choose?
| Your situation | Suggested start |
|---|---|
| Brand new to GEO | HubSpot AEO Fundamentals, then a baseline project |
| Writer or content lead | Surfer masterclass |
| SEO manager pitching to leadership | Semrush AI Search OS |
| Career changer needing proof of work | A path with a capstone, like Break into GEO |
| Employer will pay for a credential | Compare GSDC or UBC against the free options first |
How do you learn faster than any course?
Courses teach concepts. Skill comes from doing:
- Run a baseline: 20 prompts, 3 engines, 3 competitors (guide).
- Repeat runs and learn how much answers vary.
- Rewrite one page answer-first and track it for 4–6 weeks.
- Read primary sources: Google's guidance on AI features (Google) and the original GEO paper (arXiv).
- Write up what happened, including what didn't work.
What are the red flags in a paid course?
- [ ] Promises of guaranteed AI rankings or citations (Google itself says it guarantees nothing (Google))
- [ ] Vague "globally recognised" claims
- [ ] No last-updated date
- [ ] No practical exercise
- [ ] Heavy upsell to a done-for-you service
Checklist
- [ ] Goal chosen: strategy, execution or leadership
- [ ] One free course started
- [ ] Baseline project planned
- [ ] Paid options checked against red flags
- [ ] Learning written up as a portfolio piece

Questions
What is the best free GEO course?
It depends on your goal. HubSpot's AEO Fundamentals is product-agnostic, Surfer's masterclass ends in a scored exam, and Semrush's AI Search Operating System suits leaders who need a 90-day plan.
How long does it take to learn GEO?
Single courses we reviewed take about 40 minutes to 12 hours. Real skill comes from practice: running baselines, rewriting pages and measuring change over weeks.
Do I need SEO knowledge first?
It helps. Semrush says a working knowledge of SEO is helpful but not required for its AI Search courses.
