Refreshing Existing Content

Refreshing content means updating an existing page's facts, examples, sources and structure so it's accurate and useful today, without changing its URL or purpose. AI answers may repeat whatever version of your information they found. If an old page still says the wrong price or describes a retired feature, that error can travel. Regular refreshes keep your facts current at the source.

Why do outdated pages hurt?

AI systems learn from training data and retrieve live content. If your pages contain old facts, those facts may appear in answers, and conflicting information across your own pages makes it harder for any system to know what's true. Third-party pages that copied your old details add to the problem. Fixing your own pages first is the foundation.

Which pages should you refresh first?

Priority signalWhy
Contains prices, plans or specsErrors directly mislead buyers
High traffic or conversionsBiggest business impact
Cited in AI answers you trackAlready being used as a source
Topic changed recentlyNew rules, features or competitors
Falling traffic or rankingsMay no longer satisfy the query

A simple score: give each signal a point and start with the highest totals.

What should you update?

  1. Facts: prices, features, dates, names, limits
  2. Sources: replace dead or outdated links with current primary sources
  3. Examples and screenshots: match the current product or interface
  4. Answer-first opening: check it still answers the question correctly
  5. Structure: add question H2s, tables or FAQs where missing
  6. Gaps: add answers to new follow-up questions buyers ask
  7. Removal: cut sections that are no longer true or useful

How should you signal and log changes?

  • Update the visible "last updated" date only when you've made meaningful changes. Google's guidance cautions against changing dates to make content seem fresh when it isn't substantially changed.
  • Update `lastmod` in your sitemap to reflect real changes (Google).
  • Use IndexNow if your CMS supports it, to notify participating engines such as Bing (IndexNow).
  • Keep a change log: URL, date, what changed, why. You'll need it to measure impact in Lesson 8.

What about duplicate or overlapping pages?

If several pages cover the same topic, consider merging them into the strongest one and redirecting the rest. Google documents how to consolidate duplicate URLs. Fewer, better pages reduce conflicting information.

How do you fix wrong information on other sites?

Your own pages are only part of the picture. AI answers may also draw on directories, review sites, partner pages and old press coverage. After refreshing your pages:

  1. Search for your brand plus the outdated fact, such as an old price or retired feature name.
  2. List the third-party pages that repeat it, starting with those cited in AI answers.
  3. Update profiles you control, such as directories and marketplaces.
  4. Contact publishers politely with the correct, verifiable facts and a link to your updated page.
  5. Track the corrections in the same change log.

A quick example

Illustrative. A software company finds that AI answers describe a "free plan" it removed a year ago. Three pages still mention it: an old blog post, a comparison page and a FAQ. The team updates the comparison page and FAQ, adds a dated note to the blog post, updates sitemap dates, and logs each change. In later scans, it checks how often the free plan is still mentioned.

Questions

Does changing the date improve rankings?

Not on its own. Google advises against changing dates without meaningful updates. Update the content, then the date.

How often should I refresh content?

It depends on how fast the topic changes. Pricing and product pages need checks whenever things change; evergreen guides perhaps quarterly or yearly.

Should I refresh or write a new page?

Refresh when the topic and intent are the same. A new page splits signals and can leave the outdated version live.
