How Claude Picks Sources and Citations

Anthropic says that when a question benefits from current information, Claude invokes a search tool, processes multiple sources to find relevant content, and responds with direct citations, source links and relevant quotes ([Anthropic](https://support.anthropic.com/en/articles/10684626-enabling-and-using-web-search)). It doesn't publish how sources are ranked. To understand Claude's choices for your topic, audit them: run prompts, log citations and quotes, and look for patterns.

Facts are from Anthropic's help centre, accessed 30 Oct 2026. Audit methods are ours.

Indexing for search is done by Claude-SearchBot; user-requested fetches by Claude-User (Anthropic).

What's the difference between web search and web fetch?

Web searchWeb fetch

Our view: web fetch means buyers who paste your URL into Claude get your full page read. Clear structure helps Claude summarise it accurately.

What hasn't Anthropic published?

As of 30 Oct 2026 we found no Anthropic document describing:

  • how sources are ranked or how many are used
  • which search index powers text results (Anthropic says image search is powered by Bing)
  • how freshness or authority are weighted

Treat third-party claims about these as unverified unless they cite Anthropic.

How do user prompts shape sources?

Anthropic's tips encourage users to ask for multiple sources, say "search the web" explicitly, and cross-reference citations (Anthropic). Location inferred from IP may be used for localised requests. So:

  • Prompts asking for "multiple sources" may surface more domains.
  • Local prompts can vary by tester location.
  • Testers should keep wording and location constant.

How do you audit Claude's citations?

  1. Choose 20 prompts; prefix each with "Search the web:" for consistency.
  2. Run each twice, same location, same model.
  3. Log every citation: URL, domain, type, date.
  4. Log quoted text and which page it came from.
  5. Check whether each citation supports its claim.

What patterns should you look for?

  • Quoted sentences: what style gets quoted? Usually short, definitive statements. Write more of those.
  • Repeated domains: outreach targets.
  • Your pages cited for the wrong thing: clarify them.
  • Never cited: check Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User access first (Anthropic).

How do models affect results?

Anthropic lists the models that support web search (Anthropic). Different models may search and cite differently. Record the model with every test and don't mix results across models.

How does Claude compare with other engines?

EngineCitations
ClaudeEvery web search response, with quotes when appropriate (Anthropic)
PerplexityNumbered, every answer (Perplexity)
ChatGPTWhen search is used (OpenAI)
GeminiWhen sources are available (Google)

How should you write for quotation?

Because Anthropic says search answers can include relevant quotes (Anthropic), think about which of your sentences would stand alone. Our view:

  • Put the definition or answer in one sentence of under 30 words.
  • Attach a date and source to every number.
  • Avoid pronouns that depend on earlier paragraphs ("it", "this approach").
  • Keep product names and specs in the same sentence.
  • Use one idea per paragraph so a quote doesn't need surrounding context.

Then re-run your audit and compare which sentences are quoted before and after the rewrite.

Common mistakes in Claude audits

  • Mixing results from different models in one dataset
  • Changing prompt wording between runs
  • Counting a cited domain without checking whether the claim matches the page
  • Testing from a different country than your buyers
