What Is an Answer Engine? Definition and Example
An answer engine is a search tool that responds to a question with a direct, written answer, usually with sources, rather than only a ranked list of links. Perplexity, ChatGPT with search, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are common examples. Optimizing for them is often called answer engine optimization (AEO).
How does an answer engine work?
Broadly, it:
- Interprets the question, sometimes splitting it into sub-questions.
- Retrieves relevant pages from a search index or the live web.
- Uses a language model to write an answer from those sources.
- Shows citations so users can check them.
Google calls step 1 "query fan-out" for its AI features (Google Search Central).
How is it different from a search engine?
| Classic search engine | Answer engine | |
|---|---|---|
| Output | Ranked links | Written answer plus sources |
| User effort | Click and read | Read the answer |
| Success for brands | Rankings and clicks | Being mentioned, recommended and cited |
What does it mean for your content?
Answer engines favour pages that state the answer clearly, early, and with checkable details. A section that opens with a one-sentence answer, then gives a table or steps, is easier to quote than one that opens with a long introduction.
Example
Ask Perplexity "What's the difference between ARR and MRR?" It returns a short answer and several footnoted sources. Typically, the pages it cites define both terms in their first lines and show a worked example.
What are the common misconceptions?
- "Answer engines don't send traffic." Many show source links, and some users click to verify or go deeper.
- "You need a special file to appear." Google says its AI features have no extra technical requirements (Google).
- "Ranking first guarantees inclusion." Engines can pull from many pages, including ones that don't rank first.
