What Are AI Overviews? Definition and Example

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google Search shows for some queries, with links to the web pages that support them. They answer the query directly and point to sources. Google says sites don't need special markup to appear: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet (Google Search Central).

How do AI Overviews work?

Google describes a "query fan-out" technique: it may run multiple related searches across subtopics to build the response, and it can show a wider range of supporting links than classic results (Google Search Central).

How do they affect your site?

EffectWhat to do
Your page may be a supporting linkMake the key answer easy to extract
Fewer clicks on some informational queriesTrack clicks and conversions, not only rankings
Visitors who click may be more engagedGoogle calls these clicks "higher quality"; check your own data

Can you control them?

Use the standard snippet controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Google-Extended controls use in some of Google's other AI systems, not inclusion in Search (Google common crawlers).

Example

A search for "how to calculate customer churn" shows a short AI Overview with the formula and three links. A SaaS analytics blog that states the formula in its first paragraph, with a worked example, is one of them.

How should you write for AI Overviews?

Put a direct answer to the query in the first sentence or two of the relevant section, then support it with steps, a table or a worked example. Keep headings close to how people phrase the question. Make sure the page is indexed and isn't blocked from snippets. Then measure: track the queries that show an Overview in your niche and log which pages are linked.

Questions

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

You can limit what is shown with nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews.

How do I see AI Overview traffic?

Google includes it in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type. It is not split out separately.

Do I need schema to appear?

No. Google says there are no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet.
