ChatGPT vs Google Search: How Results (and Sources) Differ
ChatGPT search rewrites your question into targeted queries, retrieves pages through its search partners and OAI-SearchBot, and writes one answer with citations. Google Search ranks pages in a list and adds AI Overviews or AI Mode answers with supporting links. Both reward relevant, crawlable, clear pages, but ChatGPT puts more weight on what a synthesised answer needs: specific facts and comparisons.
Facts come from OpenAI and Google documentation, accessed 30 Oct 2026. Comparisons marked "our view" are interpretation.
How does each find sources?
| ChatGPT search | Google Search | |
|---|---|---|
| Query handling | Rewrites the prompt into one or more targeted queries, may send follow-ups (OpenAI) | Matches query to index; AI features may use query fan-out across subtopics (Google) |
| Index | Sometimes partners with other search providers; sites must allow OAI-SearchBot to be eligible (OpenAI, OpenAI) | Google's own index, crawled by Googlebot (Google) |
| Personal context | Memory (if on) and approximate location (OpenAI) | Location, language, settings |
| Ranking signals described | "Multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information"; placement not guaranteed (OpenAI) | Many signals; helpful, reliable, people-first content (Google) |
How does each show sources?
| ChatGPT | ||
|---|---|---|
| Main format | One synthesised answer | Ranked list of results, plus AI features |
| Citations | Inline citations and Sources panel (OpenAI) | Supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google) |
| Shopping | Product results; not ads (OpenAI) | Shopping results and ads |
| Click behaviour | User may never click | User often clicks a result |
What's different for brands?
Our view:
- Fewer slots. A list has ten results per page; an answer often names three to five options. Being chosen matters more than ranking seventh.
- Third-party weight. Answers to "best X" prompts often cite roundups. Your own page may rank on Google but not be what ChatGPT cites.
- Conversation. Follow-ups narrow the answer. Google sessions are separate queries.
- Measurement. Google gives Search Console data (Google). OpenAI doesn't offer a webmaster console; you measure through prompt testing and referral traffic.
What's the same?
- Crawl access is essential: Googlebot for Google; OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT (OpenAI).
- Clear, helpful content wins in both (Google).
- Structured data helps machines understand entities (Google).
- Spammy tactics are risky (Google).
What does a real query rewrite look like?
OpenAI gives its own example: a question about drugs targeting CCR8 for cancer might first become the search "CCR8 immunotherapy drug development 2025", then a more specific follow-up such as "CHS-114 conference 2025" after reviewing the first results (OpenAI). Two lessons for brands:
- The searches are shorter and more specific than the prompt, so pages that clearly match specific sub-topics get found.
- The second query depends on the first results: entities named in early sources shape what's searched next. Being named in widely cited pages compounds.
Google describes a similar idea for its AI features, running related searches across subtopics (Google). The difference is that Google's searches run on its own index, while ChatGPT may use partner providers.
How do Google's own AI features fit in?
Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode sit inside Google Search. Google says there are no extra requirements: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google). So for Google, classic SEO fundamentals feed AI answers directly. For ChatGPT, they help, but you must also allow OAI-SearchBot and earn third-party mentions.
How do you run one plan for both?

How do you compare your results?
- Pick 20 queries you track in Search Console.
- Ask the same as natural prompts in ChatGPT with search on.
- For each, record your Google position and whether ChatGPT mentions or cites you.
- Look for mismatches: high Google rank but absent in ChatGPT, or the reverse.
- For "Google yes, ChatGPT no", check OAI-SearchBot access and third-party coverage.
Illustrative example: a brand ranks #2 on Google for "invoice software for freelancers" but ChatGPT's answer cites three roundups that don't list it. The fix is outreach, not on-page SEO.

Questions
Does ChatGPT use Google's index?
OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers (its help page links Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies) and asks sites to allow its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot.
Do Google rankings help in ChatGPT?
Indirectly. Pages that are well written, relevant and crawlable tend to do well in both, but ChatGPT doesn't use Google rankings directly.
Which is more important for brands?
Both. Google still drives most search traffic, while ChatGPT shapes shortlists. Optimise shared foundations first.
