How to Rank in Google AI Mode
Google says AI Mode has no extra requirements: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and standard SEO best practices apply ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). AI Mode is aimed at queries needing exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons, and may use query fan-out to find supporting pages. To earn links, answer the nuanced, multi-part questions your buyers ask.

What is AI Mode for?
Google says AI Mode is particularly helpful where further exploration, reasoning or complex comparisons are needed; people can ask nuanced questions that might previously have taken multiple searches and get a comprehensive AI-powered response with links to supporting websites (Google).
| AI Overviews | AI Mode | |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Gist of a topic; jumping-off point | Exploration, reasoning, complex comparisons |
| Trigger | Only when additive; often doesn't show | User chooses AI Mode |
| Fan-out | May be used | May be used |
| Models | May differ from AI Mode | May differ from AI Overviews |

What are the eligibility rules?
The same as Search (Google):
- [ ] Indexed and snippet-eligible
- [ ] Meets Search technical requirements
- [ ] Follows Search policies, including spam policies (Google)
- [ ] No special files, AI text files or schema needed
Google adds that indexing and serving aren't guaranteed.
How does fan-out work in AI Mode?
Google says AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and identify supporting pages while generating a response (Google). Google's AI Mode shopping example describes several simultaneous searches to work out what makes a product suitable, then using those criteria to suggest options (Google).
Our view: for a question like "which CRM suits a 10-person agency that bills hourly and uses Gmail?", fan-out might look at CRM features, time tracking, Gmail integrations and pricing separately. A page answering one of those clearly can be linked.
What content suits AI Mode?
Our view:
| Query type | Content that helps |
|---|---|
| Comparisons | Side-by-side tables with dated facts |
| "Which is best for my situation" | Decision guides by use case |
| Multi-step reasoning | Explanations of trade-offs and criteria |
| Exploration | Clear definitions and next-step links |
| Follow-ups | Pages covering adjacent questions, internally linked |
How do you find AI Mode questions?
- Collect long, specific questions from sales calls, support tickets and forums.
- Break each into sub-questions (criteria, constraints, comparisons).
- Check which you already answer.
- Write focused sections for the gaps.
Illustrative example: a project-management tool finds prospects ask "Which tool works for a construction team with subcontractors who won't install an app?" Sub-questions: guest access, mobile web, offline, permissions. Each becomes a clear section with tested facts.
Which SEO basics still matter?
Google's list applies to AI Mode too (Google): crawl access in robots.txt and CDN, internal links, page experience, text content, quality images and video, structured data matching visible text, and current Merchant Center and Business Profile data.
How do you measure AI Mode?
Google includes AI Mode in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type (Google; Google). There's no separate AI Mode breakdown in that guidance. Our view: watch long-query impressions and clicks on pages built for complex questions, and track engagement in analytics.
What about controls?
Googlebot robots.txt governs crawling for Search; nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex limit what's shown (Google). Google-Extended doesn't affect AI Mode in Search.
What doesn't help?
- Special "AI" files or markup
- Pages written for keywords without real answers (Google)
- Scaled thin content
How do you test AI Mode visibility?
- Run 20 complex buyer questions in AI Mode from your target market.
- Record linked sites and the sub-question each link supports.
- Ask one follow-up per question and record new links.
- Compare with your content map; assign gaps.
| Question | Your site linked? | Sub-question | Follow-up linked? |
|---|---|---|---|
| "CRM for 10-person agency billing hourly" | No | Time tracking | No |
Illustrative row.
How long until you see results?
Google says crawling can take from several days to several months, depending on how often its systems decide a page needs refreshing (Google). You can request recrawls for important updates. Our view: judge AI Mode content changes over at least one to two months.
Common mistakes
- Treating AI Mode as a separate SEO channel with different rules
- Writing only for short head terms
- Leaving comparison facts undated
- Blocking Googlebot at the CDN while robots.txt allows it (Google)
Checklist
