How to Get Your Brand Into Google AI Overviews

To appear in Google AI Overviews, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet; Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations ([Google](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features)). Follow Search policies, publish helpful, people-first content and cover the related sub-questions buyers ask, because AI Overviews may use "query fan-out" to find supporting pages.

Facts are from Google Search Central, accessed 30 Oct 2026. Recommendations marked "our view" are interpretation.

What does Google say AI Overviews are for?

Google says AI Overviews help people get the gist of a complicated topic quickly and provide a jumping-off point to explore links (Google). They're designed for queries where they add benefit beyond classic Search, are shown only when Google's systems decide they're additive, and so often don't trigger.

Google reported expanding AI Overviews to more than 100 countries in October 2024 (Google) and to over 200 countries and territories in May 2025 (Google).

What makes a page eligible?

RequirementGoogle's position (Google)
IndexedRequired
Eligible for a snippetRequired
Meets Search technical requirementsRequired
Special schemaNot needed
AI text files (e.g. llms.txt)Not needed
Guaranteed inclusionNo; indexing and serving aren't guaranteed

How does query fan-out change things?

Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources, and identify more supporting pages while generating responses, showing a wider and more diverse set of links than classic search (Google).

Our view: you don't need to rank first for the head term. A page that clearly answers one sub-question ("is X dishwasher-safe?", "X vs Y battery life") can earn a supporting link. Map the sub-questions buyers ask and answer each one well.

Which SEO basics matter most?

Google's own list (Google):

  • [ ] Crawling allowed in robots.txt and by your CDN or host
  • [ ] Content findable through internal links
  • [ ] Good page experience
  • [ ] Important content available as text
  • [ ] High-quality images and videos where useful
  • [ ] Structured data matching visible text
  • [ ] Merchant Center and Business Profile up to date

How do you write for AI Overviews?

Google points to its guidance on helpful, reliable, people-first content (Google). Our view:

  • Answer the question in the first paragraph.
  • Cover sub-questions with clear H2s.
  • Use tables for comparisons.
  • Show first-hand experience and evidence.
  • Keep facts current and dated.

What's a worked plan?

Illustrative example: a running-shoe brand wants supporting links for "best shoes for flat feet".

StepAction
1List 15 sub-questions (arch support, stability vs neutral, sizing, price)
2Check which pages already answer each; find gaps
3Write focused sections or pages for the gaps, with tested specs
4Confirm each page is indexed with a snippet (URL Inspection)
5Update Merchant Center product data
6Track Web search performance monthly

How do you measure results?

Google says traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's Performance report under the "Web" search type (Google; Google). There's no separate AI Overviews filter. Google also says clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, with users more likely to spend more time on the site (Google).

Our view: track page-level clicks and impressions for pages targeting sub-questions, plus engagement in analytics.

Can you opt out?

Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot control crawling for Search, and nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex limit what's shown (Google). Google-Extended doesn't affect Search. Using nosnippet removes the snippet eligibility AI Overviews need.

What doesn't help?

  • Adding "AI" schema or text files (Google says they aren't needed)
  • Scaled, low-value content; Google's spam policies apply (Google)
  • Structured data that doesn't match visible text

How do you check eligibility page by page?

  1. Run URL Inspection in Search Console for each priority URL.
  2. Confirm it's indexed and not blocked by noindex or nosnippet.
  3. Check robots.txt and CDN rules allow Googlebot.
  4. Confirm key content is in the rendered HTML as text.
  5. Note any structured data and check it matches the page.

How long does it take?

Google says crawling can take days to months depending on how often a page needs refreshing (Google). Expect changes to show over weeks, not days.

Who should own AI Overviews work?

Our view: treat it as SEO work, not a separate programme, because Google's requirements are the same as for Search (Google). SEO owns eligibility and measurement; subject experts own the sub-question answers; merchandising owns Merchant Center data.

Checklist

  • [ ] Priority pages indexed with snippets
  • [ ] Sub-questions mapped and answered
  • [ ] SEO basics checklist complete
  • [ ] Merchant Center and Business Profile current
  • [ ] Monthly Search Console review
