Short answer

HubSpot attribution assigns credit to observed interactions under a selected model. It does not prove what would have happened without marketing. Choose contact-create, deal-create or revenue attribution for the question you need, verify the subscription and data prerequisites, then reconcile source information with GA4 and business records. Missing associations and tracking can matter more than the model selected.

Key takeaways
  • Contact, deal and revenue attribution measure different conversions.
  • Current deal-create and revenue attribution require Marketing Hub Enterprise.
  • Source properties, campaign influence and multi-touch attribution are not interchangeable.
  • A model comparison can reveal sensitivity, but it cannot repair missing evidence.

Checked 8 November 2026 (CET) against HubSpot attribution, custom-report and GA4 documentation. Reporting models and access can change. Ledgerline counts, values and Competitor A-D examples are illustrative.

01Which attribution question are you asking?

Contact-create attribution examines interactions credited with creating contacts. Deal-create attribution examines deal creation. Revenue attribution examines credited revenue outcomes under the supported data and model rules. These are different milestones in a journey, not three names for the same report.

HubSpot's October 2026 overview lists Marketing Hub and Content Hub Professional or Enterprise for attribution access, with specific Enterprise restrictions for deal-create and revenue reporting. Read the report-type section, not only the broad subscription header.

The article also clarifies that lead language in attribution can refer to contact creation rather than the lead object. State the object and event in your report title. Otherwise a sales team can reasonably interpret "leads created" differently from the marketing analyst.

Choose the question before the model. If the decision concerns qualification quality, a contact-create report alone is insufficient. If the decision concerns acquisition discovery, a closed-revenue view can overemphasise a long-delayed subset of the audience.

02What is the difference between source and attribution?

A source property records information under its defined capture rules. An attribution report distributes credit across observed interactions. A campaign influenced-contact measure applies another set of relationship rules. They can describe the same record differently without being interchangeable.

ViewUseful questionMain limitation
Source propertyHow was this record or visit classified?Depends on capture and property definition
Campaign influenceWhich records interacted under campaign rules?Influence is not causal proof
Contact-create attributionWhich tracked interactions receive creation credit?Stops at a particular conversion
Deal or revenue attributionWhich interactions receive later-stage credit?Needs appropriate access and commercial data
Self-reported sourceWhat does the person remember?Subjective and incomplete
Incrementality studyWhat changed because the activity occurred?Needs a suitable counterfactual design

Do not overwrite source fields casually to make a preferred channel appear. Preserve the original evidence and add an approved separate interpretation where necessary. Manual classification should be traceable, not a way to tidy the story after results are known.

03Which interactions can be observed?

HubSpot documents supported interactions such as page views with tracking, form submissions, marketing email clicks and connected advertising or social interactions. The exact eligibility and connection requirements matter. An offline conversation not recorded appropriately will not appear simply because it influenced a buyer.

Check connected accounts and tracking coverage. External pages need the appropriate implementation. Ad accounts and social tools have supported connection rules. A campaign plan naming a channel is not the same as a measured interaction from that channel.

Consent choices, browser limits, shared links and device changes create gaps. Do not fill every unobserved path with an assumed TikTok, LinkedIn or AI influence. State what the system can see and what remains unknown.

HubSpot notes that marketing-email click attribution uses the contact's primary email under the documented conditions. Secondary-email paths can behave differently. Review unusual identity cases rather than assuming every click joins perfectly to the intended record.

04What data is required for later-stage reporting?

Review deal relationships and key properties such as amount, create date and close date under the current report requirements. A deal with no appropriate contact association or missing commercial values can be absent or misrepresented in the analysis.

Confirm stage truth. A deal labelled closed-won in the CRM should reflect the business's agreed definition. CRM amount may still differ from realised or recognised revenue in finance. Attribution does not settle accounting treatment.

Inspect chronological consistency. HubSpot documents situations where certain models return no values when deal and contact creation chronology does not fit the model. Imports and migrations can therefore affect model suitability even when every field appears populated.

Keep association governance explicit. Adding contacts to a deal after the outcome may change how the report is interpreted. The answer is not to avoid maintaining relationships, but to preserve timing, definitions and an honest account of retrospective corrections.

05How should you compare models?

Use models to ask how credit allocation changes under different assumptions. First-touch emphasises discovery; last-touch emphasises a later observed step; multi-touch approaches distribute credit in other documented ways. Availability and model definitions should be checked in the actual tool.

Do not select whichever model makes the campaign look strongest. Choose a primary model aligned with the decision and use alternatives as sensitivity analysis. Record the choice before presenting results.

A model cannot invent a missing interaction or prove that a credited action caused the outcome. If tracking coverage is poor, sophisticated weighting can create false precision. Improve the data contract before debating small differences between allocations.

Avoid adding revenue credit from several models or overlapping reports. They are alternative views of related outcomes, not independent new revenue streams. State currency, date range, grain and conversion type next to the chart.

06How do you reconcile HubSpot with GA4?

Compare definitions first: sessions versus contacts, key events versus confirmed requests, conversion date versus interaction date, and attribution settings. Then inspect time zones, consent coverage, identity and reporting lag.

Use consistent UTMs and test redirects. HubSpot's GA4 integration sends website observations through the selected implementation, but it does not make the two systems share every identity or attribution rule. A connected tool is not a guarantee of matching totals.

Investigate controlled examples. Verify a synthetic request through the page, form, contact and report. For authorised real samples, use redacted records and appropriate access. Do not export unnecessary personal information simply to resolve an aggregate discrepancy.

Use GA4 attribution models and self-reported attribution as complementary views. Preserve disagreement when it reflects different evidence rather than forcing every system into one convenient number.

07When do you need incremental evidence?

If the decision is whether a campaign created additional demand rather than received credit, attribution is not enough. A suitable randomised or otherwise defensible counterfactual design may be needed, with appropriate expertise and sample size.

A before-and-after comparison can be affected by seasonality, product changes, other campaigns and sales capacity. A geographic comparison can suffer spillover and market differences. Label the assumptions instead of calling every comparison a lift study.

A creative A/B test answers which variant performed better under its design. It does not automatically establish the total incremental contribution of marketing versus no marketing. Keep the experiment's actual question visible.

Small programmes may not support a precise causal estimate. They can still make bounded decisions using contribution evidence, qualitative feedback and economic guardrails. Honest uncertainty is more useful than a precise but unsupported return figure.

08How should unknown discovery paths be described?

Keep an explicit unknown category where the evidence cannot identify discovery. A visitor may arrive after an offline conversation, a copied link or an answer from an AI system without a usable referral signal. The absence of a referrer does not identify which of those explanations is true.

Self-reported discovery can add useful context, but preserve the person's wording and the question asked. A response naming an assistant does not prove that the assistant cited a particular page or that every similar visitor followed the same path.

When reporting AI relevance, distinguish an observed referral, a remembered mention and a directly checked citation. They are different evidence types. Do not assign unexplained direct traffic to an AI channel to make a trend look complete. A transparent mixed-evidence report can still inform research and content decisions without claiming engine coverage or outcomes that the organisation has not verified.

09Worked example: Ledgerline

All paths, amounts and Competitor A-D observations below are illustrative. No real attribution or incremental result is asserted.

Ledgerline reviews a workshop campaign. Competitor A uses search, Competitor B social, Competitor C email and Competitor D partner events. Public activity does not reveal their full customer paths or revenue models.

Walkthrough

  1. The analyst separates contact creation from opportunity and revenue questions and checks the actual report entitlement.
  2. A synthetic path includes an educational page, workshop request and later deal. Required associations and dates are inspected before selecting a model.
  3. An illustrative \$20,000 deal is a CRM amount, not automatically realised revenue. Finance interpretation remains separate.
  4. Model views allocate credit differently. The report presents them as sensitivity analysis rather than choosing the most flattering one.
  5. GA4 shows a different source path because its observations and rules differ. A redirect issue is fixed, while legitimate model differences remain explained.
  6. The team does not call attributed credit incremental revenue. A future causal question receives a separate test plan.

The report helps prioritise investigation and planning without claiming that its model reveals the only true customer journey.

10Common mistakes

Choosing a model after seeing the preferred answer encourages selective reporting. Ignoring missing associations makes sophisticated charts unreliable. Adding model totals double-counts alternative views. Treating attribution as causality overstates the evidence.

11Try it yourself

Write the conversion question and verify report-type access. Create a coverage checklist for interactions, identities, associations and commercial fields. Test a known path before building a large dashboard.

Compare two available models and explain why their results differ without calling one universally correct. List one decision the evidence supports and one causal claim it cannot support. Define what additional design would be needed for the latter.

12Quick quiz

1. Does revenue attribution prove incremental revenue?

Answer: No. It assigns credit under a model rather than establishing the counterfactual.

2. Can a model repair missing contact-deal associations?

Answer: No. Data prerequisites need their own correction process.

3. Are source properties and campaign influence the same metric?

Answer: No. They use different definitions and answer different questions.

13What should you check before the next lesson?

Confirm report type, entitlement, coverage, associations and model choice. Keep unknowns explicit. Next, connect external systems with clear data ownership so integrations improve the evidence rather than multiplying inconsistent records and tracking paths.
