Reddit Ads Targeting: Communities, Keywords and Audiences
Distinguish Reddit audience signals, placement controls, automation and custom audiences before approving targeting.
Reddit targeting combines audience signals, placement choices and automation controls that must be understood separately. A selected community can describe an audience relationship without limiting the ad to that community's pages. Define the eligible audience, distinguish suggestions from hard controls and verify the rights and regional availability of any custom audience before launch.
- Community targeting is not a guarantee of placement inside that community.
- Keyword targeting is not identical to exact-match search advertising.
- Automated targeting treats many inputs as suggestions while respecting documented controls.
- Customer lists and retargeting need permissions, privacy review and current eligibility checks.
Checked 8 November 2026 (CET) against Reddit audience, automated-targeting, custom-audience and Business Tool Terms documentation. All Ledgerline audience plans and Competitor A-D examples are illustrative.
01What should the audience definition contain?
Begin with the problem, geography, language and legitimate customer fit. A list of communities is not a complete audience strategy, particularly when the business serves a narrow role or regulated market.
Separate positive relevance from exclusions. The team needs to know whom it hopes to reach and whom it must not reach, along with any inventory, location or policy constraints.
Do not infer sensitive personal characteristics from ordinary community participation. An interest signal is not a verified identity, job role, financial condition or buying intention.
Record the business hypothesis in plain language. For example, people engaging with operational workflow subjects may find a practical explanation relevant. That is a hypothesis to test, not proof that all selected users are qualified buyers.
02How does community targeting differ from placement?
The current audience guide describes community targeting through people active in, subscribed to or recently visiting selected communities. It does not mean the ad appears only inside those communities.
Keep the audience relationship separate from the surface where the ad is shown. Feed and Conversations placements are setup decisions, while a community audience is a targeting signal.
A community exclusion can also have a narrower effect than expected. The checked documentation explains that excluding a community placement does not necessarily exclude its members from seeing an ad on Home.
| Statement | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Community selected | An audience signal is being used |
| Community excluded | Check the documented scope of exclusion |
| Community in a report | May describe associated audience, not actual placement |
| Ad seen on Home | Does not contradict community-audience targeting |
Do not present an audience report as a placement audit unless the specific report actually establishes placement. The automated-targeting guide explicitly warns about interpreting community associations this way.
03What do interests and keywords add?
Interest categories can provide broader topical signals. Keywords can relate to context and past or current behaviour. Neither should be described as a verified list of people actively searching for the exact phrase at that moment.
The checked keyword guide lists English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch support. That is a current language fact, not a promise that every feature, advertiser region or audience product has identical availability.
Use language-specific meaning carefully. A literal translation may not match the terminology used by the intended audience. Review ambiguity and irrelevant meanings before approving a keyword list.
Do not copy a large list simply to maximise apparent coverage. Begin with terms linked to a coherent problem and inspect what the system actually supports. A recommended number of communities in guidance is not a universal minimum.
04How does automated targeting change the meaning of inputs?
The checked automated-targeting guide says it is on by default. In that mode, many audience inputs are suggestions rather than strict limits, while documented controls such as device, carrier, location and language are respected.
The guide also describes negative keywords, community exclusions and inventory controls being respected. Verify their exact scope rather than assuming all exclusions remove every related person or surface.
When automation is off, the meaning of inputs changes toward the documented targeting controls. Record the actual state in the launch receipt so later reports can be interpreted correctly.
Do not treat an expanded audience as a platform error if expansion was enabled. The relevant question is whether the chosen automation and controls fit the approved business and policy boundaries.
05When are custom audiences appropriate?
The current documentation discusses website retargeting, customer lists, lookalikes and ad-engagement retargeting. Each has a different data source and eligibility model.
Website retargeting depends on a correctly implemented and permitted measurement setup. Customer-list use depends on the rights and conditions for the supplied identifiers. Ad-engagement retargeting concerns supported ad interactions, not an assumed audience of everyone who read an organic post.
| Audience source | Review before use |
|---|---|
| Website activity | Consent, event collection, scope and current eligibility |
| Customer list | Rights, notices, purpose and secure handling |
| Lookalike | Current seed rules, automation and category restrictions |
| Ad engagement | Supported interactions and lookback definition |
Do not collect public Reddit usernames and upload them as a customer list. Public visibility does not establish the contractual rights or legal basis required for that use.
06Which current eligibility caveats matter?
The custom-audience documentation warns that privacy changes in Europe may affect availability. A marketer in Berlin should verify the actual account and audience workflow rather than assume that a global help article guarantees access.
The checked guide also says lookalike use requires automated targeting from March 2026 and describes restrictions for categories such as housing, employment, credit and political advertising. Confirm the exact current category rules before relying on a lookalike strategy.
The article contains different audience-size statements for particular workflows and broader custom-audience guidance. Do not collapse them into one universal minimum. Check the specific audience type, interface and current support clarification when a threshold matters.
Avoid building a plan around a remembered lookback or seed quota. These are volatile implementation details. The strategy should include an eligibility checkpoint and a lawful fallback if the desired audience is unavailable.
07How should exclusions and safety controls be reviewed?
List the exclusions needed for relevance, policy and brand suitability. Distinguish audience exclusions, placement exclusions and inventory controls so the team understands what each can and cannot prevent.
Test the assumptions in a second-person review. Ask whether excluding a community is intended to avoid its page placement, its associated audience or both. If the product supports only one effect, revise the plan.
Sensitive-data restrictions also apply to the message. Do not write an ad that implies knowledge of a viewer's private financial or health situation merely because an audience setting appears relevant.
A control should have an owner and a reason. Large inherited exclusion lists can contain outdated assumptions, while unreviewed defaults can leave genuine constraints undocumented.
08How should the audience plan be tested?
Keep the first test interpretable. A campaign that changes audience, creative, objective and destination simultaneously may provide delivery information but cannot isolate which element explains the outcome.
Use an approved budget and current eligible goal. Compare recorded delivery, outcome quality and cost within the limits of the test design. Do not judge an audience solely by cheap clicks.
Reports can suggest new hypotheses but are not proof of causation. An associated community may correlate with performance without being the surface or reason that produced it.
Do not assume a recommendation to run for a particular duration establishes statistical sufficiency. The required evidence depends on outcome volume, variability and the decision being made.
09What should be documented for later review?
Save the approved audience hypothesis, automation state, controls, exclusions, custom-audience source and eligibility checks in a settings record. Avoid storing raw customer identifiers in an ordinary campaign brief.
Record changes with dates and reasons. If the audience expands or a retargeting source changes, later performance should not be interpreted as if the original setup remained constant.
Review access and retention for audience data. Hashing can support matching mechanics but does not create consent or erase privacy obligations. The original source and purpose remain important.
When the team cannot verify a feature's availability or rights, use a narrower lawful plan or postpone the affected workflow. Do not fill the gap with scraped data or inferred personal profiles.
10Worked example: Ledgerline
All audience choices and Competitor A-D scenarios below are illustrative. No audience size, match rate, delivery forecast or performance outcome is claimed.
Ledgerline wants to reach people interested in approval workflows. Competitor A uses broad interests, Competitor B community signals, Competitor C keywords and Competitor D customer lists. None of these choices proves buyer fit.
An illustrative targeting receipt
The receipt separates "people associated with relevant workflow communities" from "the surfaces where the ad may appear". Geography and supported language are recorded as controls; topical signals are reviewed according to the actual automation state.
A reviewer asks what excluding a particular community is intended to achieve. If the business expects never to reach any of its members anywhere, a placement exclusion alone cannot be treated as satisfying that requirement. The plan must use supported controls or revise the expectation. A proposed customer-list addition remains unapproved until rights, source, retention and current regional availability are checked. No public usernames are collected to fill the gap.
Walkthrough
- The team defines geography, language, workflow relevance and disqualifying constraints.
- Community signals are recorded as audience relationships, not promises that ads will appear only in those spaces.
- Keywords are reviewed for meaning and supported language rather than treated as exact search queries.
- The automation state and documented controls are checked against the approved boundaries.
- A proposed European custom-audience workflow receives current eligibility, rights and consent review before use.
- Reporting compares qualified outcomes and records changes without interpreting an associated-community report as placement proof.
The plan is useful because its assumptions are explicit and its permissions are verified.
11Common mistakes
Equating community targeting with placement misreads the product. Treating keywords as exact search intent overstates relevance. Ignoring default automation hides expansion. Uploading public identities lacks the required rights. Assuming all European audience features are available ignores current caveats. Choosing winners from click cost alone neglects quality.
12Try it yourself
Create an audience plan with positive signals, automation state, hard controls and exclusions. Explain separately where an ad may appear and which audience relationships inform delivery.
Choose one custom-audience type and write an eligibility and rights checklist. Identify a lawful fallback if that workflow is unavailable, then define the qualified outcome that would make the test useful.
13Quick quiz
1. Does community targeting restrict delivery to that community's pages?
Answer: No. Audience association and placement are different.
2. Does hashing a list create permission to use it?
Answer: No. Rights and legal conditions must already be satisfied.
3. Should European custom-audience availability be assumed?
Answer: No. Check the current account, region and audience type.
14What should you check before the next lesson?
Confirm audience meaning, automation, exclusions, rights and regional availability. Keep signals separate from placements. Next, build creative that remains truthful and useful across the supported formats and automated combinations.
