How Google Search Console Works in 2026: A Marketer's Map
How Google Search Console works in 2026: properties, Performance, AI Overviews and AI Mode data, indexing, exports and what it can't tell you.
Google Search Console is Google's free report on how your site appears in Google Search, and in 2026 it is also the only first-party source for how often you appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. For marketers it answers three questions: are people seeing us, which searches bring them, and can Google read our pages at all.
- Search Console reports what happens before the click: impressions, clicks, queries and position on Google surfaces.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Web search type of the Performance report. A separate generative AI report adds an impressions-only view.
- Indexing reports tell you whether Google can crawl and index your pages. If a page isn't indexed, it can't appear anywhere in Google.
- The interface keeps 16 months of performance data. BigQuery export keeps it as long as you want, from the day you switch it on.
- Search Console doesn't measure ChatGPT, Claude or other engines. Pair it with GA4 and prompt tracking.
Checked 4 November 2026 (CET) against Search Console Help and Google Search Central documentation. Search Console reports and rollouts change often, and some features only appear for eligible properties, so confirm in your own property. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.
01What does Search Console actually measure?
Search Console counts events on Google's side. The impressions, position and clicks help page defines them:
- Impression: a user saw, or potentially saw, a link to your site. In general an item counts when it appears on the current page of results, whether or not it was scrolled into view. Carousels and infinite scroll have extra rules.
- Click: a click that takes the user outside Google Search to your page.
- Position: the topmost position of your link on that results page. The report averages this across all the searches you appeared in.
- CTR: clicks divided by impressions.
That is all the Performance report knows. It doesn't see what people do on your site, and it doesn't see searches on other engines.
02How is Search Console organised in 2026?
| Area | Reports | What a marketer uses it for |
|---|---|---|
| Overview and Insights | Overview, Insights | A quick health check and plain-English trends |
| Performance | Search results, Discover, Google News, Generative AI (Search), Generative AI (Discover) | Traffic, queries, pages, AI feature visibility |
| Indexing | Pages, Video pages, Sitemaps, Removals | Whether Google can index what you publish |
| Experience | Core Web Vitals, HTTPS | Real-user speed and stability |
| Enhancements | Structured data reports for supported types | Rich result eligibility |
| Security and manual actions | Manual actions, Security issues | Penalties and hacks, rare but urgent |
| Links | External and internal links | Who links to you and your best-linked pages |
| Settings | Users, crawl stats, bulk export, Search generative AI, associations | Access, crawling, data pipelines, AI control |
Discover and News reports only appear when your site gets traffic from those surfaces. The generative AI reports only appear when you have enough impressions in those features.
03Where do AI Overviews and AI Mode show up?
Google's AI features documentation states that sites appearing in AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall search traffic in Search Console, reported in the Performance report within the "Web" search type. So when AI Mode sends you a click, it is already in your Web clicks.
What changed in 2026 is a dedicated view. Google announced generative AI performance reports on 3 June 2026 and rolled them out to all sites on 31 August 2026. They show impressions, pages, countries, devices (Search only) and dates for generative AI features, with separate reports for Search and Discover. Lesson 7 covers how to read them.
04What else is new since 2025?
| Feature | What it does | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Insights report in Search Console | Simple cards for top and trending pages and queries | 6 |
| Query groups | AI-built clusters of similar queries in Insights | 6 |
| Custom annotations | Your own notes on Performance charts | 3 |
| AI-powered configuration | Describe a report in plain language and Search Console sets filters | 4 |
| Branded queries filter | Splits branded and non-branded traffic | 5 |
| Generative AI performance reports | Impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features | 7 |
| Search generative AI control | Include or exclude your site from those features | 8 |
| Platform properties | Search data for your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube content | 15 |
| Web multimodal search type | Lens, Circle to Search and image searches split out | 15 |
05How fresh is the data?
Performance data usually arrives within 2-3 days. The newest days can be preliminary and shown with a dotted line. All views except the 24-hour view use Pacific Time days, so a European team's "Monday" won't match GA4 exactly. Data reaches GA4's Search Console reports about 48 hours after Search Console collects it.
Our view: treat Search Console as the source of truth for demand and visibility on Google, GA4 as the source of truth for what visitors do, and neither as the source of truth for AI assistants outside Google.
06Which report answers which question?
Most marketers open Search Console with a question, not a report in mind. Use this table to jump straight to the right place.
| Your question | Report | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Are we getting more or fewer clicks from Google? | Performance (Search results) | 3 |
| Which searches bring people to a page? | Performance, Queries tab with a page filter | 3, 4 |
| How much traffic is from people who already know us? | Branded queries filter, Insights | 5, 6 |
| How often do we appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode? | Generative AI performance report (Search) | 7 |
| Should we opt out of AI features? | Settings > Search generative AI | 8 |
| Why is this page not in Google? | Page indexing, URL Inspection | 9, 11 |
| Has Google read our sitemap? | Sitemaps | 10 |
| Are our pages fast enough for real users? | Core Web Vitals | 12 |
| Who links to us? | Links | 13 |
| Is Google struggling to crawl the site? | Crawl stats | 14 |
| How do our YouTube or Instagram posts do in Search? | Platform properties | 15 |
| What do organic visitors do after they land? | GA4 link | 16 |
| How do we keep more than 16 months of data? | Bulk export to BigQuery | 18 |
07What Search Console can't tell you
Knowing the gaps saves you from wrong conclusions in meetings.
- Clicks from AI features are not split out. The generative AI report shows impressions only. Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are inside the Web totals of the main Performance report with everything else.
- It doesn't cover other engines. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Copilot are outside Google. You need GA4 referral data and prompt tracking for those (lesson 20).
- Rare queries are hidden. Google omits anonymised queries from the query table to protect privacy, so the query rows never add up to the chart total.
- It isn't a rank tracker. Average position is the topmost position across many different searches, devices and places. It is an average of what happened, not where you "rank".
- It doesn't know about conversions. Link GA4 for behaviour and key events (lesson 16).
08Three habits that make the data trustworthy
- Use a Domain property as your main view. It covers http, https and every subdomain, so traffic doesn't disappear into a property nobody checks.
- Annotate changes when you make them. A migration, a template change or a big content update is easy to forget after six weeks. Annotations take ten seconds.
- Export what you need before it ages out. The interface keeps 16 months. If you'll want year-on-year views beyond that, start the bulk export now (lesson 18), because it can't backfill history.
09Worked example: Ledgerline's first look
Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details and numbers are illustrative.
Ledgerline's marketing lead inherited Search Console from the previous agency. The first look found two URL-prefix properties (www and non-www) and no Domain property, so blog traffic on a help. subdomain was invisible. The Insights report showed the three top pages were all old comparison posts. The generative AI report was present, showing AI Overviews impressions on the "invoice approval workflow" guide. Settings showed no bulk export and no GA4 link. The lead wrote a baseline note and booked lessons 2, 16 and 18 as the first fixes.
Walkthrough
- Open Search Console and pick your property in the selector at the top left. If you see several (for example
https://www.example.com/andexample.com), note which is the Domain property. - Click Insights for a plain-English summary of the last period. Note the top three pages and whether any are trending down.
- Open Performance > Search results. Leave the defaults (last 3 months, Web) and tick all four metrics.
- Switch the date range to the last 16 months and the granularity to Monthly to see the long trend without weekday noise.
- Open Indexing > Pages and read the two numbers at the top: indexed and not indexed.
- Check Settings for the Search generative AI value and whether a bulk data export is active.
- Write the four numbers (clicks, impressions, indexed pages, not indexed pages) and the two settings into your notes. That is your baseline for the rest of the track.
10Try it yourself
Spend 20 minutes on a baseline. Copy this table into a doc and fill it from your own property:
| Item | Value | Where you found it |
|---|---|---|
| Property type you use day to day | Property selector | |
| Clicks, last 3 months | Performance | |
| Impressions, last 3 months | Performance | |
| Indexed pages | Page indexing | |
| Search generative AI setting | Settings | |
| Bulk export active? | Settings | |
| GA4 link in place? | GA4 Admin > Product links |
If any row is blank because you lack access, note who owns the property. You'll fix that in lesson 2.
11Quick quiz
1. Does the generative AI report show clicks?
Answer: No. It shows impressions only. AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted in the Web search type of the main Performance report.
2. How long does Search Console keep Performance data in the interface?
Answer: 16 months. Use the bulk export or API to keep more.
3. Which Search Console data covers ChatGPT?
Answer: None. Search Console only reports Google surfaces. Use GA4 referrals and prompt tracking for other engines.
4. Why do query rows not add up to the chart total?
Answer: Anonymised (rare) queries are left out of the table but included in the chart totals.
12What should you check before the next lesson?
- Confirm which property type you use day to day, and that you have at least full user access.
- Note your baseline clicks, impressions and indexed pages.
- Check whether the generative AI performance report appears in your property.
- Read the MentionX explainer Search Console and AI Overviews: what the data shows for the history of AI Overviews reporting.
Next: Setup: properties, verification and permissions. Or return to the Search Console for Marketers track.
