Schema Generators for AI Search

Schema generators come in three kinds: free JSON-LD form tools for single pages, SEO plugins that add schema site-wide, and enterprise platforms that manage entities at scale. For AI search, schema helps engines understand who you are and what a page is about. Google says it isn't a special requirement for AI features, so accurate markup matters more than volume.

Google says structured data gives it explicit clues about a page's meaning (Google). Its AI features guidance also says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google). So:

ClaimStatus
Schema helps search engines understand contentSupported by Google's docs
Schema is required for AI OverviewsNo; Google says there are no extra requirements
Schema guarantees AI citationsNo evidence
Organization schema helps disambiguate your brandReasonable; Google documents Organization markup (Google)

How do you validate schema?

Use both tools, as they check different things:

ValidatorChecksUse when
Rich Results TestEligibility for Google rich resultsBefore shipping any Google-facing markup
Schema Markup ValidatorGeneral Schema.org validityTypes Google doesn't show as rich results
  1. Paste the URL or code into the Rich Results Test.
  2. Fix errors; review warnings.
  3. Run the Schema Markup Validator for types Google doesn't cover.
  4. Check the markup matches visible page content.
  5. Re-test after template changes.

Which schema types matter most for AI visibility?

Start with types that state facts about your brand and content:

  • [ ] Organization: name, logo, URL, sameAs profiles (Google)
  • [ ] Article: author, dates, headline
  • [ ] Product: price, availability, reviews (ecommerce)
  • [ ] LocalBusiness: address, hours (local)
  • [ ] Person: for author pages

Google retired HowTo rich results in 2023 (Google) and stopped showing FAQ rich results on 7 May 2026 (Google Search Central), so FAQ markup earns no Google SERP feature. Check Google's current documentation before relying on any rich result type.

How do you roll schema out across a site?

  1. Audit what exists. Run five template types (home, article, product, category, about) through the Rich Results Test.
  2. Pick one source of truth. Plugin, platform or templates, not several.
  3. Fix Organization first. It's on every page and defines your brand entity.
  4. Add page-type schema by template, not page by page.
  5. Validate a sample after each deploy, and log errors.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Markup that doesn't match the page. Google requires structured data to represent visible content.
  • Duplicate graphs. A theme and a plugin both outputting Organization schema.
  • Stale product data. Price in markup differs from the page.
  • Unvalidated AI-drafted JSON-LD. Language models can invent properties; always validate.
  • Overloading. Marking up every type possible instead of the ones that describe the page.

Illustrative example: a WordPress site runs an SEO plugin and a theme that both output Organization markup with different logos. The Rich Results Test shows two Organization items. Turning off the theme's schema leaves one consistent entity.

How do generators fit with llms.txt and robots.txt?

Schema describes what's on a page; llms.txt guides agents to which pages matter; robots.txt controls who can crawl. See llms.txt generators compared and Configure robots.txt for AI crawlers.

Questions

Does schema markup help you appear in AI search?

Google says structured data helps it understand page content, but there are no special requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use schema for accuracy and rich results, not as a guaranteed AI ranking factor.

What is the best free schema generator?

For one-off pages, a free JSON-LD generator such as TechnicalSEO.com's works well. On WordPress, an SEO plugin such as Rank Math or Yoast adds schema site-wide.

How do I check my schema is valid?

Test it with Google's Rich Results Test for Google features and the Schema Markup Validator for general Schema.org validity.
