What Is a Featured Snippet? Definition and Example

A featured snippet is a special Google search result that shows a descriptive excerpt from a page first, above or within the regular results, to answer a query directly. Google's documentation describes featured snippets as boxes where the usual result format is reversed, with the snippet shown first. They also appear inside "People Also Ask" groups.

How are they chosen?

Google's systems choose featured snippets automatically when they determine the format will help users (Google). There's no markup that makes a page a featured snippet. Pages that answer a question clearly and concisely, in text, lists or tables, are more likely candidates.

Can you control them?

Yes, partly. Google documents ways to opt out or limit snippets:

ControlEffect
nosnippetNo snippet shown for the page
data-nosnippetExcludes specific parts of a page
max-snippetLimits snippet length

These controls also affect how content is used in Google's AI features (Google).

How do they differ from AI Overviews?

Why do they matter for GEO?

Featured snippets reward the same writing habits that help AI answers: a direct answer early, clear structure and self-contained passages. Pages that win snippets are often good candidates for AI citations too, though there's no guarantee.

From MentionX data: how Google's AI Mode cites pages

Method. Read-only aggregate queries over MentionX scans from 22 August to 29 October 2026 (UTC): 2,217 engine runs (2,154 completed) across 18 anonymised projects and six engines.

We don't track featured snippets or AI Overviews. We do track Google's AI Mode, the closest surface in our data:

EngineBrand mentionedAnswers with no citations
Gemini47.3%50.7%
OpenAI42.9%30.2%
Perplexity31.5%4.1%
AI Mode31.3%12.6%
Copilot26.0%47.0%
DeepSeek24.0%99.0%

AI Mode named the tracked brand in 31.3% of answers, and 12.6% of its answers had no citations. Those with citations averaged 3.15 sources per answer, far fewer than Perplexity's 9.56. With so few sources per answer, each cited page carries a lot of weight, much as a featured snippet does in classic results.

Our view: treat featured snippet work and AI answer work as the same writing discipline, but measure them separately.

Limits. A convenience sample of mostly B2B software projects, run through engine APIs, which can behave differently from the consumer apps. Perplexity, Copilot and DeepSeek figures come from a single day (26 October 2026), so treat them as a snapshot, not a trend.

Worked example: Ledgerline rewrites an FAQ answer

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable tool. Figures are illustrative.

Ledgerline's page on "What is three-way matching?" ranks well but buries the definition in its third paragraph. The team moves a two-sentence definition to the top, followed by a short numbered list of the three documents matched. They leave the rest of the page unchanged and track both Search Console results for the query and whether AI answers to the same question cite the page.

What formats do snippets use?

Featured snippets can show a paragraph, a list or a table, depending on the question. Match the format to the question: definitions suit a short paragraph, steps suit a numbered list, and comparisons suit a table. Keep the key text in HTML, not in images.

Yes. Snippets change as Google re-evaluates pages and as competitors improve theirs. Track the queries you care about and recheck pages that drop out.

How do you find snippet opportunities?

In Search Console, look for question-style queries where your page ranks on the first page but isn't the featured result. Check what the current snippet shows and whether your page answers the question more clearly or more accurately.

Common questions

Does schema markup create featured snippets? No. Google says there's no markup that makes a page eligible on its own.

Should I block snippets to force clicks? Rarely. Blocking them with nosnippet also limits how Google's AI features can use your content.

Do snippets still get clicks? Some do, but many searchers get the answer without clicking.

Questions

How do I get a featured snippet?

Google says you can't mark content as a featured snippet. Its systems choose them automatically from pages that answer the query well.

Can I stop my page appearing as a featured snippet?

Yes. Google documents using nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet to limit or block snippets.

Are featured snippets the same as AI Overviews?

No. A featured snippet quotes one page; an AI Overview is a generated summary that can draw on several sources.
