What Is Knowledge Cutoff? Definition and Example

A knowledge cutoff is the point in time after which an AI model has no information from its training data. Anything that happened, launched or changed after that date is unknown to the model itself, unless the product retrieves current information from the web when it answers. Cutoffs are a common cause of outdated answers about brands.

How does the cutoff affect answers?

SituationLikely result
Fact changed before the cutoffModel may know the updated fact
Fact changed after the cutoff, no web searchModel repeats the old fact or says it doesn't know
Fact changed after the cutoff, with web searchAnswer can be current, if a retrieved page states the new fact

Example

Illustrative. A company rebranded six months ago. In a session without web search, an assistant still uses the old name. With search on, it finds the company's announcement and current homepage and uses the new name, sometimes mentioning both.

What can marketers do?

  • Make changes retrievable. Publish rebrands, pricing changes and launches on crawlable pages with clear dates.
  • Update third-party profiles. Directories, review sites and partner pages are often retrieved and often stale.
  • Keep old names visible. A line such as "formerly known as" helps engines connect the two.
  • Test with and without search. It shows whether an error comes from memory or from a retrieved page.

Why it matters for GEO

You can't move a model's cutoff, but grounding answers in fresh pages works around it (Lewis et al.). When monitoring, record whether web search was used, so you know whether an outdated answer reflects the model's memory or your sources.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming every AI product has the same cutoff; models and versions differ.
  • Treating an outdated answer as permanent; it may change once fresh pages are retrieved.
  • Deleting old pages about a former name or product, which removes the context engines need to connect old and new.

Questions

Does a knowledge cutoff mean AI can't know recent news?

The model alone can't, but products that search the web can retrieve current pages at answer time.

How do I find a model's cutoff?

AI companies usually state it in model documentation. It differs between models and versions.

Why do AI answers repeat my old pricing?

Either the model learned it before your change, or it's retrieving an outdated page. Check the citations.
