GA4 Audiences for Remarketing and Analysis

Build GA4 audiences marketers actually use: copyable definitions, time-windowed conditions, the 100-audience limit and sharing to Google Ads.

Short answer

A GA4 audience is a set of users who meet conditions you define, re-evaluated as new data arrives, and it can be used both as a report comparison and as a remarketing list in Google Ads. Standard properties can hold 100, so build a few precise ones rather than many vague ones.

Key takeaways
  • Audiences can use dimensions, events, metrics and sequences, with time windows such as "more than 5 in any 7 days".
  • Membership is re-evaluated; users drop out when they stop meeting the criteria.
  • Google Ads lists are pre-filled with up to 30 days of data where available.
  • Limit: 100 audiences per standard property, 400 on 360.
  • Audiences are not retroactive inside GA4 reports; build them before you need them.

02How do you create one?

  1. Go to Admin → Data display → Audiences → New audience.
  2. Choose Create a custom audience.
  3. Add conditions, choose user, session or event scope, and use Add sequence for "did X, then Y".
  4. Set membership duration and, optionally, an audience trigger to log an event when someone joins.
  5. Check the summary card for an estimate based on the last 30 days, then save.

Our view: exclusions are the most valuable part of a remarketing audience. Excluding converters and staff saves more budget than any clever inclusion rule.

Audience definitions that touch personal data should follow your privacy policy. The Claude marketing governance and privacy lesson covers the same thinking for AI tools.
