Short answer

GA4 has four kinds of events: automatically collected, enhanced measurement, recommended and custom. Use the first two for free coverage, recommended names for the actions that matter, and custom events only when nothing else fits. Naming events well now saves months of messy reports later.

Key takeaways
  • Enhanced measurement adds scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video, downloads and form interactions with a toggle.
  • Recommended events (generate_lead, sign_up, purchase) are named by Google and work better with GA4 features.
  • Custom events are for anything specific to you; keep names short, lowercase and snake_case.
  • Collection limits apply: for example, event names over 40 characters are not processed.
  • Form interaction tracking is broad; many teams replace it with a precise lead event.

01The four kinds

KindHow it arrivesExamples
Automatically collectedThe Google tag sends itfirst_visit, session_start, user_engagement
Enhanced measurementToggle in web stream settingspage_view, scroll, click (outbound), view_search_results, video_start, file_download, form_start, form_submit
RecommendedYou implement, Google namesgenerate_lead, sign_up, login, purchase, begin_checkout
CustomYou implement and namepricing_toggle, calculator_used

02When enhanced measurement is not enough

form_submit fires on many form submissions, including newsletter sign-ups and search boxes, and it may fire on failed submissions. For a demo or contact form that feeds pipeline, fire a dedicated generate_lead event on the success state instead, with a parameter for the form:

gtag('event', 'generate_lead', {
  form_id: 'demo_request',
  lead_source: 'website'
});

In Tag Manager, the same event is a GA4 Event tag triggered by your form's success (a thank-you page view or a dataLayer push).

03Naming rules that keep reports readable

  • Lowercase snake_case: pricing_toggle, not Pricing Toggle.
  • Verb or object first, consistently: video_start, video_complete.
  • Put detail in parameters, not event names: cta_click with cta_id, not cta_click_header_blue.
  • Check Google's event collection limits before inventing schemes with many parameters.

Our view: if a custom event will never drive a decision, don't send it. Every extra event is something a teammate must interpret.
