How ads appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in 2026: eligible campaigns, direct vs contextual matching, AI explainers and reporting.

Short answer

Ads can now appear inside and alongside Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and they come from your existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns with no separate targeting or opt-out. What decides eligibility is your matching: broad match, AI Max, Shopping and Performance Max can match to the AI answer's context; exact and phrase only match direct commercial searches.

Key takeaways
  • No new campaign: eligible Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns can serve text and Shopping ads.
  • Two matching types: direct (to the query) and contextual (to the query plus the AI response).
  • Broad match, AI Max, Shopping and Performance Max are eligible for both. Exact and phrase are direct only.
  • Gemini-written AI explainers may appear with ads; you can't edit or opt out of them.
  • Reporting is aggregated into existing campaign and search terms reports.

01How does matching work?

Google gives two examples. A direct search like "pool vacuum cleaners" is matched to the query, as on a normal results page. An exploratory question like "why is my pool green and how do I clean it?" can be matched contextually, using the query and the AI response, so ads for testing kits or cleaners can appear.

02Where is it available?

Google's help page says ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode are available in English in the US and select English-speaking markets, with expansion over time. Check the page for the current list for your markets before planning around it.

03What are AI explainers?

In some placements, Google shows short text generated by Gemini explaining how an ad relates to the question. They are not your headlines or descriptions, and you can't write, edit, approve or opt out of them. Ads are labelled "Sponsored".

04What controls do you keep?

  • Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
  • Your landing pages and assets still decide what the ad says.
  • You can't target or exclude the AI placements on their own.

05How do you measure it?

You can't split it out in reports. Practical proxies: watch search terms that look like long, conversational questions; compare broad or AI Max campaigns before and after rollout in your market; and track conversion rate on those terms separately.

Our view: if you run only exact and phrase match, you won't appear on most exploratory AI questions. That may be fine for tight budgets, but make it a choice. See the live MentionX guide to how AI Overviews pick sources for the organic side.

06What can and can't you control?

You canYou can't
Run eligible campaigns (broad match, AI Max, Performance Max, Shopping) that can match in AI OverviewsBuy a guaranteed placement in an AI Overview
Improve assets and landing pagesOpt out of the ad explainers Google shows
Exclude brand or terms with negativesInfluence the organic AI answer through ads
Measure clicks and conversions as usualSee a separate AI Overview spend line in every report

Ads in AI Overviews are available in English in the US and select English-speaking markets. Check Google's help page for your market.

07How do you prepare, step by step?

  1. Make sure at least one campaign uses broad match, AI Max or Performance Max with good conversion data.
  2. Review landing pages: the ad may appear next to an answer, so the page must continue that answer clearly.
  3. Write assets that answer specific questions.
  4. Check search terms for long, question-style searches.
  5. For organic visibility, see How to get your brand into Google AI Overviews, and for ChatGPT see ChatGPT Search: How Brands Get Found and Cited.

08Edge cases

  • Market availability. If your market isn't covered, nothing changes yet.
  • Brand safety. Use content exclusions and brand guidelines as for any placement.
  • Reporting. Treat AI Overview reporting as partial; check Google's current documentation for any segment it offers.

09Practitioner hacks for AI surfaces

  • Write landing pages that answer the question first, then sell. That suits both AI-adjacent ads and organic answers.
  • Collect question-style search terms in a shared document for the content team.
  • Keep paid and organic AI work separate in reporting. Ads don't influence organic answers, so mixing them confuses results.
  • Check Google's help page each quarter for market availability.

10Questions to ask about AI Overviews

  1. Is our market eligible for ads in AI Overviews?
  2. Which of our campaigns can match there?
  3. Do our landing pages answer the questions people ask?
  4. Who owns organic AI visibility?

13Common scenarios and fixes

Your market isn't eligible yet. Diagnosis: Ads in AI Overviews cover English in the US and select English-speaking markets. Fix: Prepare landing pages and assets now; check availability each quarter.

Leadership asks to buy a place in AI answers. Diagnosis: Ads don't influence organic AI answers. Fix: Explain the difference and point them to organic AI visibility work.

Question searches convert poorly. Diagnosis: Landing pages don't answer the question. Fix: Write pages that answer first, then sell.

14What does this mean for your budget?

For most advertisers, ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode don't need a separate budget. They come from campaigns you already run, as long as those campaigns use matching that is eligible. That makes the work mostly about readiness: good conversion data, campaigns using broad match, AI Max or Performance Max where appropriate, and landing pages that answer the questions people ask.

Report on these placements carefully. Check Google's current documentation for any segment that shows AI Overview traffic, and treat what you see as a partial view. Don't promise leadership a number you can't measure.

Keep the organic side separate. Getting cited in AI answers depends on your content, your reputation and the sources AI systems draw on, not your ad spend. Paid data helps that work by showing what people ask, which is why lesson 16 covers how to hand it over.

15How do you brief the content team?

Send them three things each month: the question-style searches from paid data, grouped by topic; the landing page each one currently reaches; and whether that page answers the question in its first paragraph. Ask them to prioritise topics that convert in paid search and have no clear answer page. Then agree how you will measure the result: organic AI citations and AI referral traffic on the organic side, conversion rate on the paid side. Keep the brief short, and revisit it each month as the search terms change.

16Worked example: Ledgerline's question queries

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details and numbers are illustrative.

Ledgerline's exact-match-only campaign never showed on questions like "how do I stop duplicate invoice payments". After adding a broad match ad group with Smart Bidding on that theme and strong negatives, its search terms included longer, question-style queries. The team tracked those terms as a separate segment in the monthly review.

Walkthrough: Ledgerline's readiness check

  1. Confirmed the non-brand campaign used AI Max on Target CPA.
  2. Found long question searches in search terms, such as how to stop duplicate invoice payments, and wrote a landing page answering it.
  3. Added a headline and description that answered the same question.
  4. Kept organic AI visibility as a separate workstream, since ads don't influence organic answers.

17Try it yourself

  1. Check whether your market is eligible for ads in AI Overviews.
  2. Find five question-style searches in your search terms.
  3. Check whether a landing page answers each one.

18Quick quiz

1. Can ads influence what an AI Overview says organically?

Answer: No.

2. Can you opt out of the ad explainers?

3. Which campaign types can match in AI Overviews?

Answer: Campaigns using broad match, AI Max, Performance Max and Shopping, among others Google lists.
