Short answer

Meta ads in 2026 are an AI-ranked auction across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, Audience Network and, where available, WhatsApp Status. Meta Andromeda retrieves a shortlist of eligible ads for each person, a ranking model scores which ad wins the impression, and Advantage+ automation applies that system by default on Sales, Leads and App promotion campaigns. Marketers still control the objective, the conversion event, the creative library, budgets, hard geo and age floors, and the quality of Pixel and Conversions API signals. This lesson explains those pieces in plain English so the rest of the track makes sense.

Key takeaways
  • Retrieval then ranking. Andromeda retrieves candidates; ranking decides the impression.
  • Creative is the targeting. Distinct themes and formats expand who Meta can match; near-duplicates collapse into one idea.
  • Advantage+ is the default shell for Sales, Leads and App promotion. Manual controls still exist but sit behind broader settings.
  • Signal quality decides learning. Pixel plus Conversions API events, with strong Event Match Quality, feed optimisation.
  • You still own policy, special categories, landing pages and offer clarity. The model cannot fix a restricted account or a weak offer.

Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Meta Business Help Center, Meta for Developers docs, Meta for Business news posts and the Ads Manager UI labels cited in Sources. Meta renames and rolls out features by account, so confirm labels and availability in your own Ads Manager. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.

01What happens when someone might see your ad?

Meta's delivery system runs in milliseconds every time a person opens a feed, story, reel or other eligible placement.

StageWhat Meta doesWhat you influence
EligibilityFilters ads by objective, geo, age, placements, language, schedule, budget left, policy statusCampaign setup, special ad category, payment and account quality
Retrieval (Andromeda)Narrows tens of millions of eligible ads to a few thousand strong candidatesCreative diversity, catalog items, audience suggestions as signals
RankingScores predicted action rate, advertiser bid and user valueOptimisation event, bid strategy, creative quality, landing experience
AuctionHighest total value wins the impressionBudget, bid controls if you use them, competition in that auction

Meta's October 2026 engineering post on the next generation of Andromeda describes retrieval scoring every eligible ad with near ranking-level quality at over one billion ads per second throughput for the retrieval stage. You do not configure Andromeda. You feed it better candidates.

02What is Advantage+ in one sentence?

Advantage+ is Meta's label for AI-assisted campaign setup and delivery: Advantage+ campaign budget, Advantage+ audience, Advantage+ placements and Advantage+ creative enhancements. For Sales, Leads and App promotion, Ads Manager now opens the Advantage+ campaign experience by default. Awareness, Traffic and Engagement can look more manual depending on your account. Social issues, elections or politics campaigns and pharmaceuticals campaigns may not get every Advantage+ feature.

03What still matters that you control?

LeverWhy it still matters in 2026
Objective and optimisation eventTells ranking what "success" means
Creative libraryGives Andromeda distinct candidates to retrieve
Pixel + Conversions APISupplies conversion and value signals with identifiers
Budget and bid strategyCaps spend and sets volume vs efficiency trade-offs
Hard controlsLocation, minimum age, exclusions, language, special category rules
Offer and landing pageDetermines whether a click becomes a qualified result

Our view: teams that still spend most of their week on interest stacks and placement exclusions are fighting last year's product. Move that time into creative production, CRM-quality leads and server events.

04How is Meta different from Google Ads?

Meta AdsGoogle Ads
IntentMostly interruptive / discoveryOften declared query intent
Core AI shellAdvantage+ campaignsPerformance Max, AI Max, Demand Gen
Creative unitImage, video, carousel, collection, messagingRSA, Demand Gen assets, Shopping
Measurement spinePixel + CAPI + Events ManagerGA4 + enhanced conversions + Data Manager
Incrementality productConversion Lift, incremental attributionLift / geo experiments (varies)

Both platforms pushed automation. Meta made creative diversification the explicit advertiser lever that matches Andromeda. Google made query coverage and asset groups the equivalent lever. You need both tracks if you buy both channels (Google Ads for Marketers).

05Where do Meta AI and AI search fit?

Meta AI inside Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger can answer product and local questions. Separately, buyers research vendors in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode before they ever click a Meta ad. Paid social still creates demand and retargets. It does not replace being cited in AI answers. Lesson 18 covers the overlap; the engine tracks cover the organic side.

06Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.

PieceChoice (illustrative)
Primary objectiveLeads (demo requests)
Optimisation eventSchedule (CRM-qualified demo booked), not raw Lead
Monthly Meta spend\$18,000
Creative themes in flight4 (AP automation ROI, ERP connector, CFO checklist, customer story)
Formats per themeStatic, UGC-style video, carousel
Pixel + CAPIBoth, EMQ "Good" on Schedule
Advantage+On for budget, audience, placements

Walkthrough

  1. Leadership used to ask for "CFO interest targeting." After Advantage+ became the default shell, Ledgerline kept location (DACH + UK) and job-title exclusions for students, then let Advantage+ audience expand.
  2. They stopped launching five near-identical blue-product shots. Each new concept had a different hook and proof point so Andromeda could treat them as separate candidates.
  3. Raw Instant Form leads looked cheap until sales rejected them. Optimising to Schedule after a CRM webhook raised cost per lead and lowered cost per qualified opportunity.
  4. Competitor B still ran narrow interest stacks with one creative. Ledgerline's CPM looked higher; pipeline per dollar was better in the weekly revenue review.

07Common mistakes

  • Treating Advantage+ as optional chrome instead of the default Sales/Leads/App path.
  • Uploading ten crops of one idea and calling it a test.
  • Optimising to the easiest event (Landing Page View or incomplete Lead) because the learning phase exits faster.
  • Blaming the auction when Event Match Quality is Poor and half the conversions never reach Meta.
  • Comparing Meta-reported ROAS to GA4 last-click ROAS without an attribution lesson (see lesson 15 and lesson 17).

08Try it yourself

Open Ads Manager. Create a draft Sales or Leads campaign and stop at the setup screen. Note whether Advantage+ is on by default for budget, audience and placements, and which hard controls you can still edit. Discard the draft without publishing.

09Quick quiz

1. What does Meta Andromeda do?

Answer: It retrieves a shortlist of eligible ads for a person before ranking scores the winner.

2. Which campaign objectives open the Advantage+ campaign experience by default?

Answer: Sales, App promotion and Leads (availability can vary; politics and pharma may be limited).

3. Why do near-duplicate creatives hurt delivery?

Answer: The system treats them as variations of one idea, so they share learning and fail to expand retrieval coverage.

10What should you check before the next lesson?

  • You can name the retrieval vs ranking stages in one sentence each.
  • You know which objective your account uses most (Sales, Leads, Traffic, etc.).
  • You have Business Manager login access for lesson 2.

11Common questions

What is Meta Andromeda? Andromeda is Meta's ads retrieval system. It narrows tens of millions of eligible ads down to a few thousand candidates before the ranking stage scores who sees what.

Do marketers still pick audiences in 2026? Yes, but usually as suggestions. Advantage+ audience uses your inputs as guides while Meta expands delivery when it expects better results. Hard controls such as location and minimum age remain.

Why does creative matter more than targeting now? Retrieval and ranking match creatives to people. Distinct themes, hooks and formats give Andromeda more candidates. Near-duplicate ads share learning and under-deliver.
