Short answer

Comet is Perplexity's web browser, free on desktop and mobile since October 2025, with an AI assistant built into every tab. For marketers it's a fast way to summarise competitor pages, compare tabs, pull data from pages into tables, and automate repetitive web tasks. Treat it as a powerful tool with real security trade-offs. Use a separate work profile, keep the agent away from admin and payment accounts, and keep a person in charge of anything it submits.

Key takeaways
  • Comet is free to download. The Comet Assistant's heavier agent work depends on your plan and can use Computer credits.
  • Best uses are reading and extracting: summaries, tab comparisons and tables from pages.
  • Use agent actions (clicking, filling forms) only on low-risk, reversible tasks.
  • Agentic browsers are a prompt-injection target, so set browser rules with your security team first.

01What is Comet, and what does it cost?

ItemStatus (Nov 2026)
BrowserFree on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android
AccountCan be used without one. Signing in links your Perplexity history and plan
Comet AssistantBuilt-in assistant for the current page or tabs. Usage depends on plan
Work-mode agent tasksCan use Computer credits on paid plans
Comet Plus$5 a month publisher content subscription, included with Pro and Max (lesson 17)

Comet is built on Chromium, so most Chrome extensions and habits carry over. Check Perplexity's help centre for current feature availability by plan before you roll it out.

02What are the best marketing uses?

1. Page and tab summaries. Open five competitor product pages and ask "Compare these tabs: positioning line, target customer, top three features, pricing visibility. Table."

2. Data extraction. On a review site or directory page: "Extract every vendor listed with rating, review count and category into a table." Then paste it into a sheet and check it.

3. Content QA. On your own draft page: "List every factual claim on this page that lacks a source or date."

4. SERP and answer comparison. Open Google results and a Perplexity answer side by side: "Which sources appear in both?"

5. Repetitive web tasks. Collecting webinar registration links, checking UTM parameters across landing pages, or gathering press-page contact details for a PR list (then check them yourself).

6. Meeting prep. "Summarise this prospect's last four press releases and what they suggest about priorities."

03How do you get good results from the assistant?

  • Be specific about the scope: "this tab", "all open tabs", "the table on this page".
  • Ask for structured output: tables and checklists are easier to verify.
  • Ask for exact quotes when you will reuse wording.
  • Check against the page. The assistant can misread dynamic content, such as prices that change by toggle or region.

04What security rules should you set first?

Agentic browsers can read pages and take actions. That means a malicious page could try to instruct the agent (prompt injection). Security researchers have published prompt-injection findings against AI browsers, including Comet, and vendors have shipped fixes. The risk category is real, so set rules first:

RuleWhy
Use a separate browser profile for Comet agent workSeparates the agent from your main sessions
Don't log the agent into ad accounts, payment, admin or HR systemsLimits the damage if it's misled
Read-only by default. Approve every form submission or purchaseKeeps a human decision on irreversible actions
Don't let the agent act on content from unknown sitesUntrusted pages are where injection attempts live
Follow IT policy on extensions and dataComet is still a browser on a company machine
Review the assistant's history and settings regularlyKnow what is stored

Our view: use Comet as a research browser first. Agentic actions are useful for repetitive, low-stakes tasks, but they shouldn't touch anything you couldn't easily undo.

05Does Comet change how your site is measured?

Visitors who browse your site in Comet are normal Chromium-based browser sessions in GA4. Some things to watch:

  • Referrers. Clicks from Perplexity answers inside Comet should carry a perplexity.ai referrer, like any browser. Confirm this in your own GA4 data (lesson 18).
  • Agent sessions. When the assistant visits pages for a user, those visits can look unusual, with very fast navigation and short engagement. Don't assume every session is a human reading.
  • Server logs. User-requested fetches from Perplexity's systems identify as Perplexity-User (lesson 14). Browser sessions in Comet look like browser traffic.

Measurement of agentic browsing is still settling. Note anomalies and recheck quarterly.

06How should you think about your own site for Comet users?

If buyers use an assistant to summarise your pages, the same rules as answer engines apply:

  • Put the key facts in HTML text, not images or PDFs.
  • Make pricing and plan details readable without complex toggles.
  • Use clear headings and short, self-contained paragraphs.
  • Keep important content out of heavy client-side rendering where you can (JavaScript rendering for AI crawlers).

07Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.

Ledgerline's PMM used Comet for a quarterly review of competitor landing pages.

TaskComet approachTime saved (team estimate)Check needed
Positioning comparison across Competitors A-DOne window, eight tabs, one promptLargePricing toggles verified by hand
Review-site table extractionExtract-to-table promptModerateTwo ratings were misread, so all were spot-checked
UTM audit of 30 Ledgerline landing pagesAgent collected link parameters into a tableLargeRan in a separate profile with no logins
Asking a webinar host for a speaker slotNot delegatedExternal message, written by a person

Walkthrough

  1. Created a "Comet research" browser profile with no saved passwords.
  2. Opened competitor pages in one window and ran the comparison prompt.
  3. Extracted review data, then spot-checked 10 rows against the page.
  4. Ran the UTM audit task and checked five pages by hand.
  5. Wrote outreach emails without the agent.

08Common mistakes

  • Using your main profile for agent tasks. Separate them.
  • Trusting extracted numbers. Dynamic pages trip up extraction, so spot-check.
  • Letting the agent submit forms. Approve every submission yourself.
  • Assuming all Comet traffic is human. Watch for agent-like sessions.

09Try it yourself

Install Comet and create a separate profile. Open four competitor pricing pages in one window and ask for a comparison table. Verify every price by hand and note the error rate. That tells you how much to trust extraction for your category.

10Quick quiz

1. Is Comet free to download?

Answer: Yes. It has been free worldwide since October 2025.

2. What is the main security risk of agentic browsers?

Answer: Prompt injection, where a malicious page tries to instruct the agent.

3. Should Comet's agent log in to your ad accounts?

Answer: No. Keep it away from admin, payment and ad accounts.

11What should you check before the next lesson?

  • A separate Comet profile exists for agent work.
  • Your team has a written rule on agent actions.
  • You've tested extraction accuracy on your category's pages.

12Common questions

Is Comet free? Yes. Perplexity made Comet free to download worldwide in October 2025, on desktop and mobile. Some agent features and higher usage need a paid plan.

Is Comet safe for work accounts? Treat any agentic browser with care. Use a separate profile, avoid logging the agent into admin or payment accounts, and follow your security team's policy.

Does Comet affect my website analytics? People browsing your site in Comet are normal visitors. Agent-driven visits may behave differently, so watch for unusual sessions and don't assume every visit is a human.
