What Is a Buyer Prompt? Definition and Example

A buyer prompt is a question someone asks an AI engine while choosing, comparing or about to purchase a product or service. Typical examples are "best X for Y", "X vs Y" and "is X worth it". Because these answers shape shortlists, buyer prompts are usually the most commercially important part of a GEO prompt set.

What do buyer prompts look like?

PatternExample
Best for a use case"best accounting software for freelancers in Spain"
Comparison"Brand A vs Brand B for a 10-person team"
Validation"is Brand A reliable for payroll"
Constraint"cheapest CRM that integrates with Outlook"
Alternative"alternatives to Brand A for agencies"

Illustrative prompts.

What makes a good buyer prompt for tracking?

  • It reflects a real need you've heard from customers.
  • It includes the context buyers add: team size, budget, location, integration.
  • It's unbranded, unless it's deliberately a comparison or validation prompt.
  • It's tagged with product line and market.

Example

Illustrative. A sales team notes that prospects often say "we looked for something that works with Shopify and doesn't need a developer". That becomes the prompt "easiest inventory tool for a Shopify store without a developer", tracked monthly across three engines.

How do you score buyer prompts?

Track whether you're mentioned, recommended and in which position, plus the domains cited. On buyer prompts, recommendation is the outcome that matters most.

Why it matters for GEO

Learn-intent visibility builds awareness, but buyer prompts are where AI answers directly influence vendor choice. Many teams find their gaps are biggest here.

Common mistakes

  • Writing buyer prompts that are really learning questions in disguise.
  • Tracking only "best X" prompts and missing alternatives and validation questions.
  • Ignoring the constraints buyers add; answers change a lot with budget, team size or location.

Questions

How do buyer prompts differ from learning prompts?

They express a need to choose or purchase, often naming a use case, budget, location or competitor.

Where do I find real buyer prompts?

Sales call notes, demo requests, support tickets, review sites and community threads.

Should buyer prompts include my brand?

Mostly not. Unbranded buyer prompts show whether you're shortlisted; branded ones check accuracy.
