What Is Prompt Intent? Definition and Example
Prompt intent is the underlying goal of a question someone asks an AI engine, for example learning about a topic, comparing options or deciding what to buy. Tagging each prompt in your set with its intent lets you see where your brand is visible in the buying journey, rather than only how often it's named overall.
A practical intent scheme
| Intent | Buyer's goal | Example prompt | Outcome to aim for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learn | Understand a problem | "how do small clinics reduce no-shows" | Citation of your guide |
| Compare | Build a shortlist | "best appointment reminder tools for clinics" | Recommendation |
| Buy | Decide or validate | "is [Brand] worth it for a 3-dentist clinic" | Accurate, positive recommendation |
| Branded accuracy | Check facts | "how much does [Brand] cost" | Correct facts |
Illustrative prompts.
How do you tag intent consistently?
- Write a one-line rule per intent.
- Ask: is the person trying to understand, choose or decide?
- If a prompt names specific brands to compare, tag it compare.
- Have a second person tag a sample and compare results.
Example
Illustrative. A brand's overall mention rate looks healthy at 35%. Split by intent, it's 60% on learn and 10% on compare. Engines cite its guides, but don't shortlist it. That points to comparison content and review presence as priorities.
Why it matters for GEO
Intent turns a single visibility number into a map of the funnel. It also helps choose the right metric for each prompt: citations for learning, recommendations for comparing and buying.
Common mistakes
- Tagging by the words used rather than the goal behind them.
- Creating too many intent categories, which makes each segment too small to trust.
- Mixing branded accuracy prompts into compare or buy figures.
- Re-tagging old prompts without noting it, which silently changes historical segments.

It's closely related. Prompts tend to be longer and more specific, so intent is often clearer.
