What Is a Citation Gap? Definition and Example

A citation gap is a place where AI engines cite sources that feature your competitors but not you, or cite competitors' pages on a topic where you have nothing cited. Finding gaps turns a source map into a to-do list: specific publishers to approach, pages to create or pages to improve.

Types of citation gap

Gap typeWhat you seeTypical fix
Third-party list gapA cited "best X" article lists competitors, not youPitch an update with evidence
Review gapReview sites cited; your profile thin or missingBuild review volume and complete profile
Owned content gapCompetitor's guide cited; you have no equivalentCreate a better, clearer page
Owned page not citedYou have a page, but it's never citedImprove structure, clarity and crawlability

How do you find them?

  1. Log all cited URLs per prompt.
  2. For each URL, record which brands it mentions.
  3. Filter for URLs mentioning competitors but not you.
  4. Count how many answers each one appears in.
  5. Rank by frequency and intent (buy and compare first).

Example

Illustrative. One comparison article is cited in 12 of 40 compare-intent answers and lists four competitors. The brand contacts the author with a short, factual note on its product and a customer example. Three months later, it checks whether the article and the answers changed.

Why it matters for GEO

Closing a gap on a frequently cited source can affect many answers at once. Gap analysis keeps off-site work focused on sources that demonstrably matter.

Common mistakes

  • Chasing every gap at once instead of the few sources cited most often.
  • Asking publishers for links rather than accurate inclusion.
  • Forgetting to recheck answers after a gap is closed, so you never learn what worked.

Questions

How do I find citation gaps?

Compare cited URLs across your prompt set. Look for pages citing competitors where you're absent, and topics with no owned citations.

Are all gaps worth closing?

No. Prioritise by how many answers the source influences and how relevant it is to buyer prompts.

What's the difference between a citation gap and a content gap?

A content gap is a topic you haven't covered. A citation gap can exist even when you have content, if engines don't cite it.
