What Is Citation Share? Definition and Example

Citation share is the percentage of all source citations, across a set of AI answers, that point to your domain. Where citation rate asks "how often am I cited at all?", citation share asks "of all the sources engines rely on in my category, how much is mine?". It's useful for seeing which domains shape the answers buyers read.

How do you calculate it?

Citation share = citations to your domain ÷ all citations across the answers

Illustrative: 120 answers contain 480 citations in total. 24 point to your domain, so your citation share is 5%. A review site might hold 15%, a competitor 8%.

How should you use it?

  1. Rank all cited domains by share, per engine and intent.
  2. Mark each as owned, competitor, review, media, community or reference.
  3. For high-share domains where you're absent or misdescribed, plan outreach or updates.
  4. For your own pages, see which URLs earn citations and why.

Example

Illustrative. On compare-intent prompts, two review sites hold a combined 30% of citations, while the brand holds 2%. Improving the brand's review profiles may influence more answers than another blog post would.

Why it matters for GEO

Citations show what evidence engines trust. Citation share, together with a source map, tells you where effort will reach the most answers.

Common pitfalls

  • Counting the same URL twice when an engine cites it repeatedly in one answer; decide a rule and keep it.
  • Mixing engines with very different citation formats into one figure without also reporting them separately.
  • Treating citation share as traffic; a citation isn't a click.

Questions

Is citation share the same as citation rate?

No. Citation rate is the share of answers citing you; citation share is your portion of all citations given.

Do third-party citations that mention me count?

Track them separately. Your domain's share and the share of pages mentioning you answer different questions.

Which engines show citations?

Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Google AI features and others show sources, but formats differ.
