What Is an Entity? Definition and Example
An entity is a distinct, identifiable thing, such as an organisation, person, product, place or concept, that search engines and AI systems can recognise as one thing regardless of how it's written. When Google launched its Knowledge Graph in 2012, it described the idea as understanding "things, not strings" (Google). For GEO, your brand is an entity, and how clearly it's defined affects how accurately AI answers describe it.
Entity vs keyword
| Keyword | Entity | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A string of text | The real-world thing the text refers to |
| Example | "apple" | Apple Inc. (company) or apple (fruit) |
| Ambiguity | High | Resolved by context and attributes |
Example
Illustrative. A startup called "Beacon" shares its name with dozens of products. AI answers mix it up with an unrelated analytics tool. The team publishes a consistent one-line description ("Beacon is a scheduling app for dental clinics"), adds Organization structured data with official profile links, and updates directory listings. Over time, answers are more likely to separate the two, though nothing guarantees it.
What signals help define an entity?
- A consistent name, description and category across your site and profiles.
- Organization structured data on your site, including logo, URL and
sameAslinks (Google). - Profiles on reference sources such as Wikidata, where notability rules allow (Wikidata).
- Third-party coverage that describes you in the same terms.
Why it matters for GEO
AI systems answer questions about things. If your brand is ambiguous, answers may attribute competitors' features to you or omit you from your category. Entity clarity is a foundation for accurate mentions.
How do you audit your entity?
Ask three AI engines "what is [Brand]?" and "who makes [Product]?". Compare the answers with your official one-line description. Note any confusion with similarly named companies, wrong categories or outdated facts, and trace each to the sources cited. Repeat after you've updated your site and profiles.

Questions
Is my brand an entity?
Yes. Any distinct organisation, product or person can be an entity. The question is how clearly and consistently it's described across the web.
How do entities relate to keywords?
Keywords are strings of text; entities are the things those strings refer to. Google described this shift as "things, not strings".
How can I make my brand a clearer entity?
Use one consistent name and description, Organization structured data, and links to your official profiles.
