Email Metrics After Apple MPP: Clicks Over Opens (2026)
Measure email after Apple Mail Privacy Protection: why opens are inflated, which metrics to use instead, bot filtering and a B2B email scorecard.
Since Apple introduced Mail Privacy Protection, Apple Mail can download remote content, including tracking pixels, in the background whether or not someone opens the email, through relays that hide the reader's IP address. That inflates open rates and breaks open-based location, send-time optimisation and engagement tiers. In 2026, measure email on unique clicks (with bot filtering), replies, conversions in GA4 and pipeline in the CRM, and use opens only as a rough trend. Build a scorecard with deliverability, engagement and business metrics, and compare segments and providers rather than chasing industry benchmarks.
- Apple MPP loads pixels whether or not the email is opened; opens are inflated.
- Security scanners create false clicks; filter them.
- Primary metrics: unique click rate, replies, conversions, pipeline.
- Health metrics: delivery, bounces, spam rate, unsubscribes.
- Compare against your own baseline by segment and provider, not generic benchmarks.
Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Apple's Mail Privacy Protection documentation, Gmail Postmaster Tools help and GA4 documentation cited in Sources. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.
01What does Apple MPP actually do?
With Protect Mail Activity turned on (Settings > Apps > Mail > Privacy Protection on recent iOS versions), Apple Mail:
- Downloads remote content in the background by default, whether or not the reader opens the message.
- Routes that content through multiple relays and hides the reader's IP address.
- Assigns a general region rather than precise location.
Effects on your metrics:
| Metric or feature | Effect |
|---|---|
| Open rate | Inflated for Apple Mail users |
| Open time | Shows when content was prefetched, not read |
| Open-based location | Unreliable |
| Send-time optimisation based on opens | Weakened |
| "Engaged" segments based on opens | Include people who never read |
| Re-engagement and sunset based on opens | Keep inactive people on the list |
| Clicks | Not created by MPP |
Apple Mail also sorts messages into categories (Primary, Transactions, Updates, Promotions) and can show Apple Intelligence summaries, which affects visibility but not tracking.
02What creates false clicks?
Many corporate email security systems open and click links to scan them before delivering the message to the user. Signs:
- Clicks within seconds of delivery.
- Every link in the email clicked at once.
- Clicks from data-centre IP ranges.
Turn on your ESP's bot or machine-click filtering. If your ESP lacks it, create a filtered metric: exclude clicks within about 60 seconds of delivery and contacts who clicked every link in under a minute. Confirm against GA4 sessions: real clicks usually create sessions with page views; scanner clicks often do not.
03Which metrics should you use?
Tier 1: business
| Metric | Definition | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Email-sourced conversions | GA4 key events where session source/medium is email | GA4 (lesson 16) |
| Pipeline influenced | Opportunities where a contact clicked an email in the prior 30 to 90 days | CRM plus ESP |
| Trial activation from flows | Activation rate in flow vs holdout | Product data |
Tier 2: engagement
| Metric | Definition | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Unique click rate | Unique human clickers ÷ delivered | Primary engagement metric |
| Click-to-delivered by segment | As above, per segment | Relevance of content |
| Replies | Replies per send | Quality, especially for personal emails |
| Monthly active readers | Contacts with at least one click in 30 days | Newsletter audience health |
| Unsubscribe rate | Unsubscribes ÷ delivered | Fatigue and relevance |
Tier 3: health
| Metric | Source | Threshold to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Delivered rate | ESP | Drops by provider |
| Hard bounce rate | ESP | Above about 1 to 2% per send |
| Spam rate | Gmail Postmaster Tools | 0.1% warning, 0.3% critical |
| Compliance status | Postmaster Tools v2 | Any "Needs work" |
| Clicks per delivered by provider | ESP | Sudden drops at one provider |
Where opens still help
- Non-Apple segments: opens from non-Apple clients are less distorted and can show subject-line trends, cautiously.
- Deliverability hints: a sudden fall in opens at one provider can still indicate filtering.
- Total absence: a contact with zero opens and zero clicks over a long period is very likely inactive.
04How do you build a scorecard?
A monthly B2B email scorecard on one page:
| Section | Metrics |
|---|---|
| Business | Email-sourced key events, pipeline influenced, trial activation lift |
| Engagement | Unique click rate by stream, monthly active readers, replies |
| Health | Spam rate, bounce rate, compliance status, unsubscribe rate |
| List | Net growth, share of list active in 90 days, sunset volume |
| Tests | Tests run, wins, learnings |
Show each metric against the last three months and the same month last year. Avoid comparing to generic industry benchmarks: list sources, audiences and bot filtering differ too much.
05How do you report to leadership?
- Lead with pipeline and conversions, then engagement, then health.
- Explain the open-rate change once, clearly, and stop reporting opens as a headline.
- Show trends, not single sends.
- Pair each number with a decision: "Tier D frequency reduced to monthly; spam rate stable."
06Worked example: Ledgerline
Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Figures are illustrative, not benchmarks.
Ledgerline's board deck shows a 52% open rate and calls email "high performing". Sales disagrees.
Walkthrough
- Client mix: about 45% of recorded opens come from Apple Mail (illustrative).
- Clicks: 31% of clicks occur within 10 seconds of delivery, mostly from company domains with security scanners. Bot filtering on.
- New definition of active: human click, reply, site visit or product event in 90 days. Active list is 38% of contacts.
- New scorecard: email-sourced demo requests, pipeline influenced, unique click rate by stream, spam rate.
- Board deck: replaces open rate with pipeline influenced and active audience size.
- Decision: sunset policy and frequency caps based on the new definition (lessons 7 and 9).
07Common mistakes
- Reporting open rate as the headline.
- Building engagement segments on opens.
- Counting scanner clicks as human interest.
- Comparing to industry benchmarks with different methods.
- No connection between ESP data and CRM pipeline.
08Try it yourself
Export last month's sends with opens, clicks, client and timestamps. Calculate the share of opens from Apple Mail and the share of clicks within 60 seconds of delivery. Rebuild your scorecard with the three tiers above.
09Quick quiz
1. Why does Apple MPP inflate opens? Answer: It downloads remote content, including tracking pixels, in the background whether or not the email is opened.
2. What creates instant clicks after delivery? Answer: Corporate security scanners checking links.
3. What is the primary engagement metric after MPP? Answer: Unique human click rate.
4. Where can opens still help? Answer: Non-Apple segment trends, deliverability hints and identifying long-term total inactivity.
10What should you check before the next lesson?
- Bot filtering on for opens and clicks.
- "Active subscriber" defined.
- Scorecard rebuilt without opens as a headline.
- Pipeline-influenced report agreed with sales.

11Common questions
Are email open rates useless now? Not useless, but unreliable as a performance metric. Apple Mail Privacy Protection loads tracking pixels in the background for many readers, so opens are inflated. Use them only for rough trends and deliverability hints, never for winners or engagement tiers.
What should replace open rate? Unique click rate, click-to-delivered by segment, replies, conversions and pipeline influenced by email, plus monthly active readers for newsletters.
Why do I see clicks seconds after delivery? Corporate security scanners often click links to check them. Filter these with your ESP's bot detection and by excluding clicks that happen instantly or on every link.
Does Apple MPP affect click tracking? MPP does not click links, so clicks still reflect people (apart from security scanners). It also hides IP addresses, so location from opens is unreliable.
