Looker Studio for Marketers: Free Course (2026)
Free Looker Studio (Data Studio) course: dashboards, GA4, Ads, Search Console, AI visibility, BigQuery, Gemini and Pro.
Looker Studio for Marketers is a free, practical 20-lesson track on Google's reporting tool, which Google renamed back to Data Studio in April 2026. You will build marketing dashboards from scratch, connect GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Sheets and BigQuery, write calculated fields, blend up to five sources, and ship an AI search visibility dashboard that combines the AI Assistant channel with prompt-tracking data. Later lessons cover executive and client reporting, scheduling, GA4 API quotas, BigQuery at scale, Gemini in Data Studio, Conversational Analytics and a governance routine your team can keep.
- 20 lessons: foundations and connectors, dashboard builds, AI visibility and reporting ops, then scale and governance.
- Reflects the November 2026 product: Data Studio (formerly Looker Studio), Data Studio Pro at \$9 per user per project per month, Gemini in Data Studio, and Conversational Analytics generally available.
- Every lesson includes a Ledgerline walkthrough, an exercise, a quiz and a checklist.
- Steps checked against Google Cloud Data Studio docs, the product page and the connectors cited in Sources.
Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against Google Cloud Data Studio documentation, the Data Studio product page, the Looker Studio-is-Data-Studio blog post, connector help pages and the Analytics Help pages cited in Sources. Google renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.

| Do we need Pro? | Lesson 2 |
| Which connector should I use for Meta Ads? | Lesson 3 |
| How do I build my first report? | Lesson 4 |
| How do I calculate ROAS or a channel group? | Lesson 5 |
| How do I let clients filter their own brand? | Lesson 6, Lesson 15 |
| Can I put Ads spend next to GA4 revenue? | Lesson 7, Lesson 12 |
| How do I report AI referral traffic? | Lesson 13 |
| Why is my report timing out on GA4? | Lesson 17, Lesson 18 |

03How is the track organised?
Foundations (lessons 1-3). What Data Studio is after the rename, free versus Pro, and which connectors (Google vs partner) you actually need.
Core skills (lessons 4-8). Your first dashboard, calculated fields, filters and parameters, blending up to five tables, and a brand theme you can reuse.
Channel dashboards (lessons 9-12). GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, then a blended cross-channel ROI view.
AI visibility and reporting ops (lessons 13-16). An AI search visibility dashboard, executive one-pagers, agency client templates, and scheduling or sharing.
Scale and governance (lessons 17-20). Quotas and performance, BigQuery, Gemini and Conversational Analytics, and a monthly routine with named owners.
04Who is this track for?
Marketing ops and analytics people, performance marketers, SEO and AEO leads, agency account managers and heads of marketing who need reports that stay accurate when more than one person opens them. Some of you already live in GA4 and Google Ads and want a shared view. Others need to show AI referral traffic and prompt-tracking numbers next to classic channels. This track covers both.
Each lesson has a Ledgerline worked example. Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company that competes with four rivals, called Competitor A to Competitor D. Each lesson also has a walkthrough, an exercise and a short quiz.
05What do you need?
- A Google Account with access to datastudio.google.com (lookerstudio.google.com redirects there).
- For lessons 9-13, access to a GA4 property, a Google Ads account and a Search Console property you are allowed to report on.
- For lesson 13, a Google Sheet with a prompt-tracking tab (MentionX export or a manual sheet).
- For lesson 18, a Google Cloud project with BigQuery and, ideally, the free GA4 BigQuery export already linked.
- For lesson 19, Data Studio Pro if you want Gemini assistance or the Code Interpreter; Conversational Analytics with BigQuery agents is available to all Data Studio users.
- Edit rights on the reports you build. Viewer-only access is not enough for the exercises.
Our view: most marketing teams should start on the free product, put reports on owner's credentials, and only buy Pro when ownership risk or schedule volume forces the issue. Quotas and bad blends break more dashboards than missing Pro features.
06How this track pairs with the other tracks
Looker Studio sits on top of the measurement stack you may already have in Academy.
- Lessons 9 and 17 pair with GA4 for Marketers, GA4 Looker Studio reporting and GA4 thresholds and sampling.
- Lesson 10 pairs with Google Ads for Marketers.
- Lesson 11 pairs with Search Console for Marketers and Search Console Data Studio reporting.
- Lesson 13 pairs with the AI Assistant channel regex, GTM AI referral traffic, track AI traffic in GA4, Perplexity GA4 referral tracking and ChatGPT referral traffic.
- Lesson 14 pairs with the executive GEO dashboard template.
- Lesson 18 pairs with GA4 BigQuery export and Search Console BigQuery bulk export.
- Lesson 19 pairs with Gemini for Marketers (shipping soon).
- Lesson 16 can be automated further with n8n reporting for GA4 and Google Ads.
07What done looks like
When you finish the track, your team should be able to show:
- A written decision on free versus Pro, with owners named for every production report.
- Reusable data sources for GA4, Google Ads, Search Console and Sheets on owner's credentials.
- A GA4 marketing dashboard that stays inside API quotas on a normal workday.
- A Search Console page that uses the right impression table for the question.
- A blended ROI view that states its join keys and attribution caveats in the report itself.
- An AI visibility page with AI Assistant sessions, engine-level sources, Search Console AI impressions and a prompt-tracking sheet, reported as separate rows.
- An executive one-pager and, if you are an agency, a client template with a brand parameter.
- A monthly audit checklist that covers credentials, freshness, broken charts and schedule delivery.
If any item is missing, go to the matching lesson.

09Five setups to build first
If you only have time for a few, these give most teams the quickest return:
- A GA4 marketing dashboard on owner's credentials with under 12 charts (lesson 9).
- An AI Assistant exploration page with session source and landing page (lesson 13).
- A Search Console URL-impression page for your money pages (lesson 11).
- A shared theme and cover page so every report looks like yours (lesson 8).
- A credentials and ownership note in the report footer (lesson 20).
10How this track stays honest
We cite Google's own Data Studio documentation, product pages and release notes, with access dates. Where the product was renamed (Looker Studio to Data Studio in April 2026, Looker Studio Pro to Data Studio Pro, Gemini in Looker to Gemini in Data Studio), we use the current name and give the old one once. We do not invent quota numbers, connector prices beyond what vendors publish, or ranking claims. Partner connector prices change often, so lesson 3 tells you where to check rather than locking a third-party price into stone. Ledgerline numbers are fictional and labelled illustrative. Prices for Data Studio Pro are list prices in USD for the United States on 5 November 2026.
11Study paths by role
Marketing ops / analytics: lessons 1-9, 12-13, 17-20. These cover the stack, quotas and governance.
Performance marketer: lessons 1, 3-7, 9-12, 16. These cover Ads, GA4, blends and delivery.
SEO / AEO lead: lessons 1, 4-5, 9, 11, 13-14, 20. These cover Search Console, AI visibility and the executive view.
Agency account lead: lessons 2, 6, 8, 14-16, 20. These cover Pro, templates, branding and scheduling.
Head of marketing: lessons 1-2, 13-14, 17, 20. These cover cost, AI visibility and whether the reports can be trusted.
12Time estimate
Expect 40-70 minutes per lesson if you do the exercise in a real account. Lessons 12, 13 and 18 take longer the first time, because blends, prompt sheets and BigQuery need setup. After that, the monthly routine in lesson 20 takes about half a day.
13Common questions
Is this Looker Studio course free? Yes. Every lesson is free to read, with no sign-up.
Is it still called Looker Studio? Google renamed Looker Studio back to Data Studio in April 2026. lookerstudio.google.com redirects to datastudio.google.com. This track uses both names so searchers and Google's docs still match.
