How Perplexity Picks Sources and Citations
Perplexity says it searches the web in real time, ranks sources on authority and relevance, and links each source in a numbered citation ([Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work), [Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352906-what-is-instant-buy)). It hasn't published a detailed ranking method. So the practical way to understand its choices is to audit them: run your prompts, open every citation, and look for patterns in what gets picked.
Facts are from Perplexity's help centre and docs, accessed 30 Oct 2026. Patterns described as "our view" are interpretation.

What hasn't it published?
As of 30 Oct 2026 we found no Perplexity document that explains:
- how "authority" is measured
- how many sources a standard answer uses
- whether specific domains get a boost
- how freshness is weighted
Treat any claim about these as a third-party hypothesis unless it cites Perplexity.
How do search modes affect sources?
| Mode | What Perplexity says (Perplexity) | Effect on sources (our view) |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Real-time web search with cited answer | A handful of focused sources |
| Pro Search | Thorough research across multiple sources; applied automatically if your plan includes it | More sources, more chances to be cited |
| Research | Dozens of searches, hundreds of sources, report in 2–4 minutes | Long-tail and niche pages get a chance |
When testing, record which mode was used. Results from different modes aren't directly comparable.
How does Perplexity-User affect citations?
When a user asks a question, Perplexity may visit a page through Perplexity-User to help answer and include a link to it (Perplexity). Perplexity says this fetcher generally ignores robots.txt, because a user requested the fetch. So a page can be fetched for a user even if you've disallowed PerplexityBot. But blocking PerplexityBot still removes you from the search index Perplexity uses to surface results.
How do you audit Perplexity's citations?
- Choose 20 prompts for your topic.
- Run each in Search mode, from the same location, twice.
- For every answer, list the numbered citations: URL, domain, page type, publish date.
- Mark which citation supports which claim.
- Tag each domain: your site, competitor, publisher, review site, forum, academic, other.
| Prompt | Cite # | Domain | Type | Date | Supports |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| "best X for Y" | 1 | publisher.example | Roundup | 2026-09 | Shortlist |
| "best X for Y" | 2 | yourbrand.example | Product page | 2026-10 | Pricing |
Illustrative rows.
What patterns should you look for?
- Domain repeats: the same few domains cited across many prompts are your outreach targets.
- Page type: if roundups dominate, comparison and "best for" content matters; if docs dominate, technical depth matters.
- Freshness: if most citations are recent, update dates and current facts matter.
- Claim mapping: which claims come from your site, and which come from others about you.
How should you act on the audit?
| Finding | Action |
|---|---|
| You're never cited | Check PerplexityBot access first (Perplexity) |
| Competitors' pages cited for facts about you | Publish those facts clearly on your own site |
| A publisher cited repeatedly | Earn coverage there |
| Old pages cited | Update and date them |
| A wrong claim cited | Correct the source; see Fix wrong facts |
