How to Rank in Perplexity
To rank in Perplexity, first make sure PerplexityBot can reach your site through robots.txt and your firewall, then publish pages that answer specific questions clearly, and earn mentions on authoritative sources. Perplexity searches the web in real time and cites every answer (Perplexity), and it says it ranks sources on authority and relevance (Perplexity). It doesn't publish more detail than that.
Facts are from Perplexity's documentation, accessed 30 Oct 2026. Recommendations beyond that are our view, labelled as such.
What does Perplexity say about how it works?
Perplexity's help centre describes four steps (Perplexity):
| Step | What Perplexity says |
|---|---|
| Understand | Uses language models to interpret the question's context |
| Search | Searches the internet in real time, gathering from sources such as articles, websites and journals |
| Summarise | Compiles the most relevant insights into one answer |
| Cite | Each answer includes numbered citations linking to original sources |
Its Research mode performs dozens of searches and reads hundreds of sources (Perplexity). Perplexity also says content is sourced from the web in real time as questions are asked (Perplexity).
Implication: if Perplexity can't fetch your page at the moment of the question, it can't cite you.
Step 1: Is PerplexityBot allowed?
Perplexity documents two user agents (Perplexity):
| Agent | Purpose | robots.txt |
|---|---|---|
| PerplexityBot | Surfaces and links sites in Perplexity search results; not used to crawl for foundation models | Respected |
| Perplexity-User | Fetches pages for user requests | Generally ignores robots.txt, since a user requested it |
Perplexity recommends allowing PerplexityBot and permitting its published IP ranges (Perplexity). Changes can take up to 24 hours to apply (Perplexity).
User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /Step 2: Is your firewall blocking it?
robots.txt isn't enough if a WAF blocks the bot. Perplexity's docs give rules for Cloudflare and AWS WAF that match the user agent and the published IP ranges (Perplexity). Notes from the docs:
- In Cloudflare, use a Skip rule placed above blocking rules.
- Cloudflare's Bot Fight Mode can't be skipped with custom rules and may still challenge Perplexity bots.
- Keep IP ranges current; Perplexity suggests automating updates.
Check server logs for PerplexityBot requests and their status codes.
Step 3: Do your pages answer specific questions?
Our view: because Perplexity says it compiles "the most relevant insights" (Perplexity), pages that answer one question directly are easier to cite than long, general pages.
- [ ] Put the direct answer in the first paragraph
- [ ] Use question headings that match real queries
- [ ] State facts (prices, specs, dates) in text, not only in images
- [ ] Add a visible "last updated" date
- [ ] Keep one topic per page
Step 4: Are you on authoritative sources?
Perplexity says it ranks sources by authority and relevance (Perplexity) and that responses are supported by citations from reputable news organisations, academic publications and established sources (Perplexity).
Our view: that suggests coverage in respected industry publications, research and well-known review sites carries weight, alongside your own pages.
Step 5: How do you track progress?
- Run your buyer prompts in Perplexity (prompt library).
- Record which numbered citations are yours or mention you.
- Check referral traffic from perplexity.ai in your analytics.
- Watch PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User hits in logs.
- Re-test monthly.
What does a worked plan look like?
Illustrative example: a B2B analytics vendor never appears in Perplexity for "best product analytics for mobile apps".
| Week | Action | Check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Finds Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode challenging PerplexityBot; adjusts settings and adds a Skip rule with current IP ranges | Logs show 200s |
| 2 | Rewrites its mobile analytics page to open with a direct answer and a feature table | Page fetchable, answer-first |
| 3–8 | Pitches data to two industry publications Perplexity already cites for the prompt | Coverage published |
| 9 | Re-runs 20 prompts | Citation count logged |
The order matters: content and outreach can't help until access works.
- Blocking PerplexityBot while expecting citations
- Assuming robots.txt rules stop Perplexity-User (Perplexity says it generally ignores them)
- Paying for placement in organic answers; Perplexity says advertising doesn't influence organic results (Perplexity)
- Thin pages written only for AI
How is it different from ChatGPT and Google?
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | Google AI features | |
