Perplexity Shopping and Product Recommendations
Perplexity shows product cards for shopping questions and says it ranks them like its sources, on authority and relevance, while favouring merchants that provide deeper product details such as availability, reviews, pricing and specifications ([Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352906-what-is-instant-buy)). Listings aren't sponsored. In the US, eligible products can be bought in the answer with Instant Buy.
Facts are from Perplexity's help centre, accessed 30 Oct 2026. Features and eligibility change; check the linked pages before planning around them.
How does Perplexity pick products?
Perplexity's Instant Buy help article says (Perplexity):
| Factor | What Perplexity says |
|---|---|
| Ranking | Product listings ranked with criteria similar to source ranking: authority and relevance |
| Query match | Cards tailored to the query; more specific queries get more precise matches |
| Personalisation | Past searches, interactions and saved preferences refine results over time |
| Product detail | More likely to recommend merchants with deeper details: availability, reviews, pricing, specifications |
| Reviews | Analyses product reviews across multiple sites |
| Ads | Listings based on relevance and ratings; advertisers can't pay to appear |
How does Instant Buy work?
- A user asks a shopping question ("sofas under $500") and gets product cards.
- They select Instant Buy and enter details once; Perplexity saves them.
- The order and payment go directly to the merchant for fulfilment (Perplexity).
Availability: Perplexity says it's available to users in the United States and not for Enterprise Pro or Enterprise Max plans (Perplexity).
Which merchants are eligible?
Perplexity supports Instant Buy only with merchants compatible with its agentic checkout experience, starting with popular categories (Perplexity). Its PayPal help page names select merchants including Wayfair and Abercrombie & Fitch, plus thousands of merchants on BigCommerce, Shopware and Wix (Perplexity).
Products that aren't eligible still appear as cards, but buyers go to the merchant's site.
Why does product detail matter so much?
Perplexity explicitly says merchants with deeper product details are more likely to be recommended (Perplexity). Our view: detail helps in two ways. It lets Perplexity match narrow queries ("lightweight stroller for city apartments"), and it makes listings look reliable.
| Detail | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Availability | Avoids recommending out-of-stock items |
| Price | Matches budget queries |
| Specifications | Matches attribute queries (size, material, compatibility) |
| Reviews | Feeds the cross-site review analysis |
What should merchants do?
- [ ] Publish complete product pages: specs, price, availability, shipping, returns
- [ ] Keep data consistent across your site, marketplaces and feeds
- [ ] Add Product structured data for machine readability (Google)
- [ ] Allow PerplexityBot and its IP ranges (Perplexity)
- [ ] Encourage genuine, detailed reviews on several sites
- [ ] If on BigCommerce, Shopware or Wix, check your platform's Perplexity checkout options
- [ ] Test shopping prompts from a US location if you sell there
How do you test your product visibility?
- Write 20 shopping prompts: category, budget, attribute, gift, comparison.
- Run them in Perplexity; note whether Pro Search was applied.
- Record: your product shown? position? Instant Buy badge? price correct?
- Note which review sites are cited.
- Repeat monthly; personalisation means a fresh account gives a cleaner baseline.
Illustrative example: a homeware brand appears for "linen bedding" but not "linen bedding for hot sleepers". Its product pages don't mention breathability. Adding tested fabric details and reviews that discuss it gives Perplexity something to match.
How does this compare with ChatGPT shopping?
| Perplexity | ChatGPT | |
|---|---|---|
| Ads in product results | No (Perplexity) | No; ads separate (OpenAI) |
| Buy in the answer | Instant Buy for eligible US merchants | Agentic commerce specs published (OpenAI) |
| Product data route | Product detail on the web; checkout-compatible platforms | Third-party metadata, Shopify Catalog, direct feeds (OpenAI) |
| Personalisation | Past searches, interactions, preferences | Memory, custom instructions |
What queries trigger product cards?
Perplexity's own examples of queries that enable Instant Buy are "Sofas under $500", "Best skincare products for sensitive skin as a gift" and "Premium silk sheets" (Perplexity). They share three traits worth copying into your test set:
- a product category ("sofas", "silk sheets")
- a constraint (budget, skin type, quality tier)
- sometimes an occasion ("as a gift")
Perplexity says the more specific the query, the more precisely it can match products (Perplexity). So build test prompts that combine category, constraint and occasion, and make sure your product pages state those attributes in plain text.
What should you avoid?
- Fake or incentivised reviews (they also breach platform policies)
- Prices that differ between your page and feeds
- Hiding shipping and returns details
Checklist
- [ ] Product pages complete
- [ ] Data consistent everywhere
- [ ] PerplexityBot allowed
- [ ] Checkout-platform options reviewed
- [ ] Monthly shopping test
