Perplexity vs Google Search: How Results Differ

Google Search returns a ranked list of results, plus AI features with supporting links. Perplexity searches the web in real time and returns one answer with numbered citations ([Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352895-how-does-perplexity-work)). They use different crawlers, show sources differently and offer very different measurement. Shared foundations carry over, but Perplexity needs its own access checks and citation tracking.

What carries over from Google SEO?

  • Indexable, fast, accessible pages
  • Clear titles and answer-first introductions
  • Structured data for entities and products (Google)
  • Authoritative coverage and links
  • Avoiding spam tactics (Google)

  • [ ] Allow PerplexityBot in robots.txt
  • [ ] Allow its IP ranges in your WAF; watch Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode (Perplexity)
  • [ ] Understand that Perplexity-User may fetch pages for users regardless of robots.txt

  • [ ] Track perplexity.ai referrals in analytics

How do you compare your visibility?

  1. Take 20 queries from Search Console where you rank top 5.
  2. Ask them as natural questions in Perplexity.
  3. Log: Google position, Perplexity cited (yes/no), which domains Perplexity cited instead.
  4. For "Google yes, Perplexity no", check PerplexityBot access first, then the cited domains.
  5. For "Perplexity yes, Google no", look at what Perplexity liked: often a specific, direct page.

Illustrative example: a travel insurer ranks #3 on Google for "travel insurance for skiing" but Perplexity cites two consumer-advice sites and a forum. The insurer's page is fetchable; the gap is third-party coverage.

Where does Google say AI features need nothing extra?

Google says there are no extra technical requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and no special AI text files or schema are needed (Google). Perplexity, by contrast, depends on its own crawler and firewall access. That's the clearest practical difference: for Google, classic SEO hygiene is the whole entry ticket; for Perplexity, you must also open the door to a separate bot and verify in logs that it gets through.

Questions

Does Perplexity use Google's index?

Perplexity documents its own crawler, PerplexityBot, for surfacing sites in its search results. It doesn't publish a full description of its index.

Is ranking well on Google enough for Perplexity?

Not on its own. You must also allow PerplexityBot through robots.txt and your firewall, and Perplexity's answers cite only a few sources.

Which gives better measurement?

Google, through Search Console. Perplexity has no equivalent webmaster console, so you rely on prompt testing, logs and referral traffic.
