Short answer

For many buyer questions, Perplexity cites reviews, comparison articles, publisher coverage, forums and documentation more than vendor sites. Your citation gap is the list of those sources that mention competitors but not you. Find it by running your prompt set, logging every cited domain, and marking which ones include you. Then close the highest-value gaps with PR, review programmes, community participation and corrections, honestly and with disclosure.

Key takeaways
  • Log every cited URL for your prompt set, then group them by domain and source type.
  • A gap = a frequently cited source that mentions competitors and not you.
  • Prioritise by how often the source is cited and how winnable it is.
  • Earn coverage openly. Fake reviews and undisclosed paid placements are a legal and reputational risk.

Checked 5 November 2026 (CET) against the Perplexity Help Center, Perplexity blog, Perplexity API docs and the outlets cited in Sources. Perplexity renames and moves features often, so confirm labels and limits in your own account. "Our view" marks MentionX opinion. Ledgerline is a fictional company used for illustration.

01How do you build a citation map?

  1. Use your prompt set. Use 20 to 50 buyer questions across your clusters (building a prompt set).
  2. Run each prompt in Perplexity (manually in Pro Search, or with the Agent API or n8n from lessons 11 and 12). Run each one several times, or across several weeks, because citations vary.
  3. Log every cited URL with the prompt, date and run number.
  4. Classify each domain by type: review site, publisher, community, analyst, partner, competitor, your own site, documentation, video.
  5. Mark mentions: does the cited page mention you, Competitor A, B, C or D?
DomainTypeTimes citedMentions LedgerlineMentions AMentions B

finance-publisher.examplePublisher15NoYesYes
forum.example/r/accountingCommunity11NoYesNo

ledgerline.exampleOwn6Yes

Use the citation gap analysis template to structure this.

02How do you prioritise gaps?

Score each gap on two axes:

FactorHighLow
Citation frequencyCited across many promptsCited once
WinnabilityAccepts pitches, updates regularly, open to reviewsClosed, rarely updated

Then plan:

QuadrantAction
Frequent and winnableDo now
Frequent and hardLong-term relationship or a data-led pitch
Rare and winnableBatch with other work
Rare and hardIgnore for now

Our view: the most-cited review site and the top two publishers usually matter more than everything else combined. Start there.

03What tactics close each type of gap?

Source typeTacticHonesty rule
Review sitesAsk real customers for reviews after a success moment, and keep your profile complete and currentNever incentivise only positive reviews or post fake ones. Follow the site's rules
Publisher "best of" listsPitch the editor with what's new, a comparison table and a customer contact (listicles, ethically)Disclose any commercial relationship
Publisher news and featuresOffer original data or expert commentary (digital PR)Accurate data with a method note
Community threadsParticipate as a named employee, answer questions helpfully, and don't astroturf (Reddit guidance)Always disclose affiliation
Analyst reportsBrief analysts and submit for evaluationsFollow the analyst's process
Partner and integration pagesCo-marketing, integration listingsAccurate claims
Wrong or outdated facts about youAsk for a correction with evidenceFactual requests only

The honesty rules aren't just good manners. In the US, the FTC's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials (finalised in 2024) bans fake reviews and review incentives that depend on the review being positive. Other markets have similar consumer protection rules, so check with legal before launching a review programme.

04How do you handle negative or wrong sources?

If Perplexity cites a source that's wrong about you:

  1. Confirm what's wrong, and gather evidence.
  2. Fix your own site first, so the correct fact exists in a crawlable, dated place.
  3. Ask the source for a correction politely, with the evidence.
  4. For community threads, reply factually as a named employee (handling negative threads).
  5. Track whether the wrong fact persists in answers (tracking brand hallucinations).

05How do you measure progress?

  • Coverage: the share of top-20 cited domains that mention you.
  • Citation share: how often your domain or pages mentioning you are cited across the prompt set (lesson 19).
  • Mention rate: how often answers name you.
  • Time to cite: how long new coverage takes to appear in answers.

Recheck the citation map monthly. Sources rise and fall, and new publishers appear.

06Worked example: Ledgerline

Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable software company. Details are illustrative.

Ledgerline mapped 40 prompts over three weekly runs.

Walkthrough

  1. Ran the prompt set three times and logged 600-plus citations.
  2. Classified domains and marked mentions.
  3. Scored frequency and winnability.
  4. Picked the top three gaps.
  5. Wrote PR pitches with original data. Each email was sent by the PR lead after review.
  6. Set up a customer review request in the CRM, compliant with the review site's rules.
  7. Rechecked the map monthly.

07Common mistakes

  • Only optimising your own site. For commercial questions, third parties often carry the answer.
  • One run. Citations vary, so use several runs.
  • Spray-and-pray pitching. Pitch the exact gap with useful data.
  • Astroturfing. It's against community rules and easy to spot, and it can backfire publicly.

08Try it yourself

Run ten buyer prompts twice each. Log every cited domain and mark whether it mentions you. Pick the most frequently cited domain that doesn't mention you and write one pitch, review request or correction for it (draft only, and send it through your normal process).
