What Is an ICP Persona? Definition and Example

An ICP persona is a description of an individual buyer within your ideal customer profile (ICP): their role, situation, goals, problems and the words they use. In GEO, ICP personas guide how you write prompts, so you measure AI visibility for the questions real buyers ask rather than the ones you'd like them to ask.

Why do they matter for GEO?

AI assistants answer the question they're given, and small wording changes can change which brands appear. A persona-based prompt such as "We're a 40-person agency and our project tracking lives in spreadsheets; what should we switch to?" is closer to a real buying moment than "best project management software". Building your prompt set from personas makes your measurement more realistic.

How do you build one?

  1. Start from real customers: sales calls, onboarding notes, support tickets and reviews.
  2. Note the role, team size, trigger (why now), constraints and alternatives considered.
  3. Capture their exact phrases. These become prompt wording.
  4. Write 5–10 prompts per persona across stages: problem, category, comparison and brand.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing personas without customer evidence.
  • Using marketing language buyers don't use.
  • Too many personas, which makes the prompt set hard to maintain.
  • Ignoring buying committees: a CFO and an end user ask different questions.

Example

Illustrative. A payroll provider's persona "Finance manager at a 150-person company expanding to a second country" produces prompts about multi-country payroll and compliance. The team discovers it's rarely mentioned for these prompts, although it's strong on generic "best payroll software" prompts.

Questions

What's the difference between an ICP and a persona?

An ICP describes the ideal company or customer type. A persona describes an individual buyer within it, with goals, problems and language.

Why do ICP personas matter for GEO?

AI answers depend heavily on how a question is phrased. Prompts written from a persona's real situation give a truer picture of visibility.

How many personas should I use?

Start with two or three that drive most of your revenue. More personas multiply your prompt set quickly.
