What Is an Unlinked Mention? Definition and Example
An unlinked mention is a reference to your brand, product or people on another website that doesn't include a hyperlink to you. In traditional SEO, attention focused on links. In GEO, unlinked mentions matter too, because language models and AI answers learn from and summarise text, and a brand named in trusted sources can appear in answers whether or not there's a link.

Linked vs unlinked
| Linked mention | Unlinked mention | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | "...tools such as ExampleCo..." | "...tools such as ExampleCo..." |
| Referral traffic | Possible | None directly |
| Discovery by readers | Yes | Yes, by name |
| Text AI systems can read | Yes | Yes |
Why can they matter for AI visibility?
AI systems draw on text from the web, through training data and live retrieval. When respected sources repeatedly describe your brand in a category, AI answers are more likely to associate you with it. Google hasn't published how unlinked mentions affect Search rankings, so treat that as unconfirmed.
How do you find them?
- Search your brand name, excluding your own domain
- Use media-monitoring or SEO tools
- Review the sources AI answers cite for your prompts
- Check community sites, such as forums, where your category is discussed
What should you do with them?
- Check accuracy. Correct outdated facts by contacting the publisher politely.
- Consider a link request where a link genuinely helps readers.
- Learn from the pattern. Which publications mention you, and in what context?
- Build more through PR, partnerships and useful resources people want to reference.
Are unlinked mentions worth tracking as a KPI?
They're a useful supporting metric. A rising count of accurate mentions in sources your buyers read suggests growing awareness, and it often precedes higher AI mention rates. Track the count and the context, such as category, sentiment and accuracy, rather than the raw number alone.
From MentionX data: how many answers name brands without links
Method. Read-only aggregate queries over MentionX scans from 22 August to 29 October 2026 (UTC): 2,217 engine runs (2,154 completed) across 18 anonymised projects and six engines.
Answers with no citations name brands with no link at all:
| Engine | Brand mentioned | Answers with no citations |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 47.3% | 50.7% |
| OpenAI | 42.9% | 30.2% |
| Perplexity | 31.5% | 4.1% |
| AI Mode | 31.3% | 12.6% |
| Copilot | 26.0% | 47.0% |
| DeepSeek | 24.0% | 99.0% |
Unbranded answers without citations named more tracked brands on average (1.44) than those with citations (1.11).
Our view: the same logic applies to the pages engines read. Roundups and forums that name you, even without a link, are part of what answers summarise.
Limits. A convenience sample of mostly B2B software projects, run through engine APIs, which can behave differently from the consumer apps. Perplexity, Copilot and DeepSeek figures come from a single day (26 October 2026), so treat them as a snapshot, not a trend.
Worked example: Ledgerline's unlinked mentions
Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable tool. Figures are illustrative.
Ledgerline searches its name, excluding its own domain, and finds it's named without links in three AP software roundups. One of them is cited by answers to two of its buyer prompts and lists a pricing model Ledgerline dropped last year.
The team emails the editor current facts and a press page link. The roundup is updated; whether a link is added is the editor's call. Ledgerline logs the change and rechecks the two prompts after the next run.
Unlinked mentions in AI answers vs on the web
| On the web | In AI answers | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Articles, forums, reviews | Chat and search answers |
| Can you edit? | Ask the publisher | Only by changing sources |
| How to find | Search, monitoring tools | Prompt tracking |
Common mistakes
- Asking for links on every mention, which annoys editors.
- Counting mentions without checking whether they're accurate.
- Ignoring forums because they rarely link.
- Treating the count as a goal in itself rather than a sign of how your category is described.
