ChatGPT Work for Marketing Tasks
ChatGPT Work replaced ChatGPT agent. How marketers use Work for multi-step tasks: briefs, decks, sheets and research, with approvals and limits.
ChatGPT Work is the agent mode for multi-step tasks: it researches, uses your connected apps and a browser, and produces documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports and Sites. Use Chat for quick answers and Work when you want a finished file. It replaces ChatGPT agent, which OpenAI says is no longer available.
- Choose Chat or Work in ChatGPT. Work is for deliverables and longer tasks.
- Work can create native Google Docs, Sheets and Slides when Google Workspace is connected, and work in Excel via the desktop add-in.
- Actions that need approval pause for you; spoken approval isn't supported in Voice.
- Work usage follows the Codex usage structure, so heavy tasks use more.
- Work isn't available in projects set to project-only memory.

01When should a marketer use Work instead of Chat?
| Task | Chat | Work |
|---|---|---|
| Rewrite a headline | Yes | Overkill |
| Turn a brief into a formatted Google Doc | Possible, manual | Yes |
| Build a campaign tracker in Sheets from a brief and last quarter's data | No | Yes |
| Make a 10-slide QBR deck from a report | No | Yes |
| Research competitors and write a summary doc | Deep research | Yes, for the file |
| Build a simple internal dashboard | No | Yes, as a Site (lesson 12) |
02How do you brief Work well?
Treat it like briefing a capable freelancer: outcome, inputs, format, constraints and checks.
WORK BRIEF
Goal: a [deliverable] for [audience] by [use].
Inputs: [files / apps / links]. Use only these for facts.
Format: [Google Doc / Sheet / Slides], following [template].
Must include: [sections].
Must not: send, post or share anything; change existing files
except [x].
Before finishing: list every claim and its source, and anything
you couldn't find.QBR DECK
From the attached Q3 report and the Sheet "Q3 metrics", build
a 10-slide deck in Google Slides: summary, 3 wins, 2 misses
with causes, channel table, next-quarter plan. One message per
slide. Speaker notes with the source of each number.CAMPAIGN TRACKER
Create a Google Sheet tracking the [campaign] launch: tabs for
tasks (owner, due, status), assets (type, channel, status,
link) and metrics (weekly, by channel). Pre-fill tasks from
this brief: [paste].03How do approvals and permissions work?
Work uses the apps and permissions you've given it. Plugins keep their app access and action restrictions, and if an action needs your approval, the task pauses for you to approve or decline. On desktop, Computer Use can operate your apps and browser for you. Keep "must not send or post" in every brief, and check app permission settings so ChatGPT asks before taking actions in tools that publish.
Our view: Work is best at assembling: pulling inputs together into a formatted first version. Check every number in a deck it builds against the source before it goes to anyone.
04Worked example: Ledgerline's monthly report
Ledgerline is a fictional accounts-payable tool. Details are illustrative.
Ledgerline's marketing lead spent half a day each month assembling a report. With Google Workspace connected, a Work brief pointed to the GA4 export, the pipeline Sheet and last month's report as a template. Work produced a Google Doc and a six-slide summary. The first run mislabelled one channel; the lead added "use channel names exactly as in column B" to the brief. The second month needed only a read-through.
05What should you check before the next lesson?
- Check Work appears in your account and which apps it can use.
- Run one Work brief with a "must not send or post" line.
- Decide which projects need default memory so Work can run there.
