Linking Search Console and Google Ads to GA4
Link Search Console and Google Ads to GA4: what each link adds, the one-stream rule, 16 months of query data and importing key events.
Link Search Console to see organic queries next to on-site behaviour, and link Google Ads to import key events, share audiences and see cost data. Both take minutes in Admin → Product links and are the two integrations every marketing property should have.
- One web data stream links to one Search Console property, and vice versa.
- The Search Console collection must be published from the Library before it appears.
- Search Console data in GA4 lags 48 hours and covers up to 16 months.
- Google Ads links import key events as conversions and share audiences; personalised advertising is on by default.
- AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are inside Search Console's web search data, not a separate GA4 channel.

01Search Console link
- Admin → Product links → Search Console links → Link.
- Choose a Search Console property you are a verified owner of.
- Select the web data stream.
- In Reports → Library, publish the Search Console collection.
You get two reports: Queries (Search Console metrics by query) and Google organic search traffic (landing pages with GA4 engagement and key events). Links can't be edited; delete and recreate to change them.
02Google Ads link
- Admin → Product links → Google Ads links → Link.
- Choose the Ads account (or a manager account to cover clients).
- Decide on Enable personalized advertising (on by default) and auto-tagging.
- In Google Ads, import the GA4 key events you want to bid on.
03What to do with them
| Question | Report |
|---|---|
| Which queries bring engaged visitors? | Google organic search traffic, sorted by engaged sessions |
| Which Ads campaigns drive demos? | Advertising → key events by Google Ads campaign |
| Is organic losing clicks to AI Overviews? | Search Console Queries over time, plus what Search Console shows about AI Overviews |
Our view: import only one or two GA4 key events into Ads as primary conversions. Bidding on everything teaches the algorithm to chase cheap actions.
Next: Custom dimensions and testing in DebugView. Or return to the GA4 for Marketers track.
04Common questions
Why don't I see Search Console reports after linking? The Search Console collection is unpublished by default. Open Library, find the Search Console collection and publish it.
How fresh is Search Console data in GA4? Google says data is available 48 hours after Search Console collects it, and reports cover at most the last 16 months.
What happens if I don't link Google Ads? Auto-tagged clicks still show as google / cpc, but Ads cost data is not fully visible, clicks aren't used for Google paid channels attribution and key events can't be imported.
