GA4 Custom Dimensions and Testing Events in DebugView

Register event parameters as GA4 custom dimensions, respect the 50-dimension limit, and test new events safely in DebugView.

Short answer

GA4 only shows event parameters in reports after you register them as custom dimensions or metrics, and the safest way to check new tracking is DebugView with Tag Assistant or Tag Manager preview. Register first, test second, publish third.

Key takeaways
  • Register parameters in Admin → Data display → Custom definitions.
  • Standard limits: 50 event-scoped custom dimensions and 50 custom metrics (125 each on 360).
  • Registration is not retroactive. Data before registration won't appear in that dimension.
  • DebugView shows events from devices in debug mode, in near real time.
  • Don't send personal data such as emails in parameters.

01Dimensions marketers usually register

ParameterScopeWhy
form_idEventSeparate demo, contact and newsletter forms
cta_idEventWhich button drove the click
content_group or page_typeEventBlog vs product vs comparison page
plan_nameEventWhich plan a trial or purchase was for
customer_typeUserProspect vs customer, set after login

02Register a custom dimension

  1. Admin → Data display → Custom definitions → Create custom dimension.
  2. Name it for humans ("Form ID"), choose the scope, and enter the exact parameter name (form_id).
  3. Save. Data starts appearing within a day or so for new events.

03Test with DebugView

  1. Open your site through tagassistant.google.com (or Tag Manager Preview). This adds the debug parameter.
  2. In GA4, open Admin → DebugView and select your device.
  3. Trigger the action and click the event in the timeline to check parameter names and values.
  4. Fix any typo before publishing your Tag Manager container.

A dataLayer push that a Tag Manager GA4 Event tag can read:

window.dataLayer = window.dataLayer || [];
dataLayer.push({
  event: 'generate_lead',
  form_id: 'demo_request',
  page_type: 'pricing'
});

Our view: a short tracking plan, one row per event and parameter with owner and purpose, is the most useful GA4 document a team can keep.

Next: BigQuery export on the free tier. Or return to the GA4 for Marketers track.

04Common questions

Why doesn't my event parameter show in reports? Parameters only appear as dimensions after you register them as custom dimensions. Registration is not retroactive, so register early.

How many custom dimensions can I create? Standard properties allow 50 event-scoped custom dimensions and 50 custom metrics; Analytics 360 allows 125 of each. User-scoped limits are lower.

How do I see my own test events? Enable debug mode with Tag Assistant or Tag Manager preview, then open Admin → DebugView. Your device appears in the device selector.
